Virgin Valley High played only four football games last season in a pandemic shortened season that didn’t even include any playoffs. In that season, the Bulldogs split those four games, winning two and losing two. After one game on the season, Virgin Valley is al- ready halfway to their win total from last season. The Bulldogs opened its season on the road at Del Sol on Aug. 20 and came away with a dominating 46-0 victo- ry. They played their home opener on Aug. 27 against Eldorado, but the game was played after the Mesquite Monthly printing deadline. Gavin Brown threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third for the Bulldogs (1-0). He was 7 of 9 for 150 yards. Ethan Workman and Javen Laub each scored rushing touchdowns and Jimmy Kelly and Cutler Crandall each had receiving touchdowns as well. Ashten Ro- man had two big catches in the first half and finished with three catches for 66 yards in the game. The Bulldogs scored on every possession they had in the first half. The defense gave up only two first downs in the game, both in the second half. The sec- ond half was played with a running clock. “We didn’t have a lot of guys to sub out in the second half, but everybody got in,” said coach Matt Woods. “They all got a lot of playing time.” The Bulldogs rushed for 180 yards in the game, with seven players getting carries. Sophomore Gavin Baird, Jaxon Beard and Brown each had 20 yards rushing in the game. Woods said his team didn’t have much of a scouting report on the Dragons because they have a new coach and Virgin Valley hadn’t played them in awhile. “We had no idea of what they were going to do,” he said. “We guessed it would be the spread, which it was. We practiced and prepared for everything.” On defense, Baird and Beard each had five tackles to lead the way. Benson Leavitt and Martin Jordan each had sacks. Woods was impressed by the play of senior Brown, who was playing quarterback for the first time with the Bulldogs. He also said his young offensive line held up pretty well too.
