Material for this Report was compiled in March 2005 and accordingly there is no financial data in respect of 2004 included. Paul Farrell Cláraitheoir na gCara-Chumann 4 Statement of Strategy MISSION STATEMENT “To ensure that the various mutual entities registered at the Registry, which are subject to general regulation and supervision in varying degrees by the Registrar of Friendly Societies, comply with their statutory obligations and to maintain an up to date public record on those entities”. ROLE OF THE REGISTRY WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT OF ENTERPRISE, TRADE AND EMPLOYMENT “To play an effective role in helping to implement the Department’s Strategic Goals 4 and 5 to effect a business regulatory system which is to the forefront of international standards, commands public confidence and international respect and to ensure delivery of enhanced responsiveness and quality customer care and to play a constructive role in implementing an effective statutory framework for the development and supervision of co-operatives and credit unions in accordance with the Department’s Objective 4(i)”. OBJECTIVES 1. The efficient and effective registration and general regulation of Industrial and Provident Societies, Friendly Societies and Trade Unions. 2.     The Famine in Mayo 1845-1850 A Mayo County Library Exhibition 1 Charles Edward Trevelyan, Assistant Secretary to the Treasury directed government relief measures during the famine, meticulously scrutinising all expenditure The Famine in Mayo 1845 - 1850 The Great Famine was one of the defining moments of Irish history. It marked a watershed in the history of the country causing a change so complete in the Irish social and economic fabric, that the people’s sensibilities would never be the same again. No longer could the Irish people trust to the land to provide constant sustenance. No longer could they rely on whatever security of tenure was allowed by the landlords, and more importantly they learned that their English political masters cared little for their plight. The Famine in Mayo is a portrait of the lives and deaths of the people as recorded by witnesses in books, newspapers and official records of that period. 1(a) The Famine in Mayo 1845 - 1850 The Potato Disease e first reports of blight appeared in September of 1845. For one third of the country’s population of eight million, the nutritious lumper potato was pratically the sole article of the diet. In County Mayo, it was estimated that nine tenths of the population depended on it. An acre and a half of land could provide enough potatoes to support a family for most of the year. Any other crops or animals the smallholder raised went to pay rent. A potato famine was a great calamity. Following the guidance laid out Celebration of the 20th in this plan, the following public buildings and venues will close for three Anniversary of the Town weeks. Twinning of Castlebar and Hochstadt, Germany. • All Mayo County Council Libraries (A call and collect service will remain in place). • All Mayo County Council Museums and Art Centres. Swimming pools and Gyms will remain open with additional restrictions. Our offices remain open, as do our public receptions, however, keeping our safety, and the safety of the public in mind, we are encouraging the public to make every effort to do their business with us online or over the phone. Whilst Mayo has some of the lowest Covid-19 numbers in the country, we are at a critical juncture now with the numbers of confirmed cases increasing nationally. We must double down on our efforts to combat the spread of the virus. Together with the HSE and An Garda Síochána, the Council has launched an appeal to the Mayo public in the fight against Covid-19. The appeal includes contributions from well-known Mayo sports personalities Andy Moran and Maeve Gallagher, along with our Cathaoirleach, Cllr Richard Finn. MAYO : PART 1 (The Prehistoric Settlement) “The Lake lay like a mirror that somebody had breathed upon, the brown islands showing through the mist faintly, with grey shadows falling into the water, blurred at the edge.” From “The Lake” by George Moore INTRODUCTION Lough Carra is a picturesque lake set in the unique landscape of Co. Mayo. Over the centuries the lake has been associated with great writers, poets, artists and scientists. Carra’s intriguing place-names denote a rich and ancient past associated with local myth and legend. Today, the lake is an important tourist attraction and anglers haven. It also supports a significant habitat for a number of Mayo’s common and rare flora and faunas’ species. The focus of this study is the immediate landscape around Lough Carra Co. Mayo in the Barony of Carra. This piece attempts to present a condensed introduction to the possible five millennia of human habitation within the region and to shed light on the significant heritage value of this hidden landscape. “The evidence of heritage is the essence of continuity” (O’Hara, 1991, 13) and Carra demonstrates that continuity with the rich archaeological evidence exhibited in the diverse categories of monument, which include promontory forts, cists, ringforts, crannogs, enclosures, field systems, ecclesiastical sites, causeways, and tower-houses. Surveys were carried out on the archaeological features around Lough Carra, during the 1990s. This work was part of a wider survey of the county. The surveys were presented in two significant publications: ‘Ballinrobe and District, An Archaeological Study, (The Moyturra Project)’ and ‘The Archaeological Survey of Mayo’.
