In particular, this research analyzes the negotiation and redefinition of culture between Nicaragua’s revolutionary past and its neoliberal present.     Advanced Praise for Provocation and Protest This book is at once a work of social science and a homage. At the same time that he offers a nuanced analysis of the student mobili- zations in Nicaragua, José Luis Rocha reveals the great respect he has for the willingness of the university students to assume risks, to imagine a new and different Nicaragua, and to mobilize without depending on the top-down, masculinist hierarchies that were one of the Achilles’ heels of social movements of the past. José Luis has an enviable ability to move easily back and forth between social the- ory, historical comparison, and empirical analysis of the reality. He gives us a detailed understanding of why and how the student mobi- lizations happened, and of why the government of Daniel Ortega is so terrified of a social group whose demands are not—as this book shows well—radical or transformative, much less terrorist. In a certain sense, José Luis presents these mobilizations as performing three vital functions simultaneously: they demand a cultural change toward a society that is more open, just, and sustainable; they trans- mit this cultural change by their very existence; and they reflect cul- tural changes that are already happening in Nicaraguan society and that no government can hope, in the long run, to completely control. In sum, this book has convinced us that change will inevitably come, thanks to the combination of social and ethical values already present in the country’s youth, the greatly increased number of stu- dents, and the social media to which the great majority have access.

  • History of Nicaragua
    History of Nicaragua In 1502, Columbus became the first European to visit Nicaragua. It was later settled by Spanish explorers—known as conquistadores—who battled and conquered the indigenous people. Spanish settlements date from the 1520s. Indigenous groups resisted the Spanish until finally being conquered in 1552. Britain established settlements along the Mosquito Coast (Costa de Mosquitos) in the 17th century and claimed sovereignty over the coast in 1740. However, Nicaragua essentially was ruled by Spain until it declared independence in 1821. With independence, it became a member of the United Provinces of Central America but chose to be an independent republic in 1838. Political power in the country alternated between liberals and conservatives over the next few decades. The competition sometimes led to violence. When internal chaos threatened U.S. economic interests in1909, the U.S. military intervened. During the 1920s and1930s, guerrillas led by Augusto Cesar Sandino fought the U.S. occupation. A rival general, Anastasio Somoza García, gave orders for Sandino to be assassinated in 1934. In 1936, Somoza seized the presidency. He ruled as a dictator until his assassination in 1956. The Somoza family continued to rule the country, beginning with Somoza’s son Luis Somoza Debayle, who died in 1967. He was succeeded by his brother, General Anastasio Somoza Debayle. In 1962, the Sandinistas revolutionary group (Sandinista National Liberation Front, or FSLN) was formed with the goal of overthrowing the Somozas. For the next 15 years, Sandinistas carried out various unsuccessful terrorist attacks on General Somoza’s National Guard, which was armed by the United States.

  • Chapter 1 Anthropological Theory
    Introduction This dissertation is a historical ethnography of religious diversity in post- revolutionary Nicaragua, a study of religion and politics from the vantage point of Catholics who live in the city of Masaya located on the Pacific side of Nicaragua at the end of the twentieth century. My overarching research question is: How may ethnographically observed patterns in Catholic religious practices in contemporary Nicaragua be understood in historical context? Analysis of religious ritual provides a vehicle for understanding the history of the Nicaraguan struggle to imagine and create a viable nation-state. In Chapter 1, I explain how anthropology benefits by using Max Weber’s social theory as theoretical touchstone for paradigm and theory development. Considering postmodernism problematic for the future of anthropology, I show the value of Weber as a guide to reframing the epistemological questions raised by Michel Foucault and Talal Asad. Situating my discussion of contemporary anthropological theory of religion and ritual within a post-positive discursive framework—provided by a brief comparative analysis of the classical theoretical traditions of Durkheim, Marx, and Weber—I describe the framework used for my analysis of emerging religious pluralism in Nicaragua. My ethnographic and historical methods are discussed in Chapter 2. I utilize the classic methods of participant-observation, including triangulation back and forth between three host families. In every chapter, archival work or secondary historical texts ground the ethnographic data in its relevant historical context. Reflexivity is integrated into my ethnographic research, combining classic ethnography with post-modern narrative methodologies. My attention to reflexivity comes through mainly in the 10 description of my methods and as part of the explanation for my theoretical choices, while the ethnographic descriptions are written up as realist presentations.
