Admont, im März 2010 Jürgen Reinmüller Vorwort 3 Vorwort Die höchstgelegenen Bereiche der Hochgebirge der Erde weisen bis dato eine außerordentlich geringe Dichte an Klimastationen und damit ein Defizit an verfügbaren Klimadaten auf. Aussagen zu den thermischen Aspekten in den Gipfellagen extremer Hochgebirge jenseits der 6000 m Grenze konnten bis dato nur unbefriedigend erörtert werden. Als staatlich geprüfter Berg- und Schiführer und begeisterter Höhenbergsteiger liegen die beeindruckenden, hochgelegenen Gipfel seit Jahren in meinem Interessensbereich. Zudem sehe ich mich in meinem bergführerischen Arbeitsbereich zunehmend mit den Zeichen des aktuellen Klimawandels konfrontiert. Schmelzende Gletscher oder auftauender Permafrost stellen für Bergsteiger ein nicht unwesentliches Gefahrenpotential dar. Die durch das von Univ. Prof. Dr. Reinhold Lazar ins Leben gerufene Projekt HAMS.net (High Altitude Meteorological Station Network) gewonnenen Daten können künftig bei der Tourenplanung diverser Expeditionen miteinbezogen werden und stellen eine wichtige Grundlage für klimatologische Hochgebirgsforschung in großen Höhen dar. Ich selbst durfte dieses interessante Projekt durch den Data-Logger-Tausch am Aconcagua im Februar 2007 ein wenig unterstützen und werde dem Projekt auch in Zukunft mit Rat und Tat zur Seite stehen. -
The Mountain Research Initiative (MRI): What Comes Next?
Mountain Views (Nov 2012) The Mountain Research Initiative (MRI): What Comes Next? The Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) promotes and coordinates global change resesarch in mountains around the world. It arose from the International Geosphere and Biosphere (IGBP), and the International Human Dimensions (IHDP) Programs in 2002, is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and is based at the Geography Institute of the University of Bern. The MRI continually searches for the next steps in promoting global change research in mountains. Since the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) renewed the MRI's funding in 2010, the MRI has pursued its program of global and regional networking activities, synthesis workshops, and new communication modes, but is going beyond them now to investigate more sustained efforts. While any research into global change in mountains represents progress, research that adds to an understanding of the "whole system" - the coupled human-natural system within mountains as it is embedded within the planetary earth system of atmosphere, oceans and continents - is one of MRI's principal scientific goals. The MRI makes liberal use of the "analytical structure" of its parent scientific organization, the Global Land Project, as it captures the linkages and the embedded-ness and speaks as well to the evolution of the whole system toward or away from sustainability. The Global Land Project analytical structure (GLP 2005) This emphasis on whole systems creates a certain tension in MRI's work, as research by its analytic nature, tends to focus on mechanisms and parts of systems. This is as it should be: to create an integrated understanding, one must have parts to integrate! Thus, while encouraging research on specific parts of the coupled human-natural system, MRI must at the same time promote the continual interrogation of how these parts come together to create a whole system. -

Anomalous 10 years as 1941, 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16 signified enormous fluvial discharges draining towards the Pacific 11 Ocean, but also to the Atlantic. These floods affected large cities built on medium-latitudinal Andes (Lima, Quito, 12 Salta), but also those located at floodplains, as Porto Alegre, Blumenau, Curitiba, Asunción, Santa Fe and Buenos 13 Aires. Maximum discharge months are particular and easily distinguished along time series from watersheds located 14 at the South American Arid Diagonal. At watersheds conditioned by precipitations delivered from the Atlantic or 15 Pacific anti-cyclonic centers, the ENSO-triggered floods are more difficult to discern. The floods of 1941 affected 16 70,000 inhabitants in Porto Alegre. In 1983, Blumenau city was flooded during several days; and the Paraná River 17 multiplied 15 times the width of its middle floodplain. That year, the Colorado River in Northern Patagonia 18 connected for the last time to the Desagûadero – Chadileuvú - Curacó system and its delta received saline water for 19 the last time. -

INFORME DE AVANCE IABIN ECOSYSTEM GRANT: DIGITALIZACIÓN DE DATOS E INFORMACIÓN, DEPURACIÓN Y ESTANDARIZACIÓN DE PISOS DE VEGETACIÓN DE CHILE Patricio Pliscoff, Federico Luebert, Corporación Taller La Era, Santiago, Chile, 30 de Septiembre de 2008. Resumen Se ha ingresado el 50,6% de la información bibliográfica recopilada para el desarrollo de la base de información puntual georeferenciada de inventarios de vegetación. Se ha depurado el 68,5% del total de pisos de vegetación de la cartografía digital. Se ha comenzado el proceso de estandarización de la clasificación de pisos de vegetación con el estándar de metadatos del IABIN, encontrando algunas dificultades en el ingreso de información. Las equivalencias entre pisos de vegetación y sistemas ecológicos ya ha sido finalizada. Abstract The 50.6% of the compiled bibliographic references for the development of the georeferenced database of vegetation inventories have been included. The 68.5% of vegetation belts of the digital cartography have been debbuged and fixed. The standarization process of vegetation belts has been begun, entering data into the IABIN ecosystem standard, finding some difficulties in the information entrance. The equivalences between vegetation belts and ecological systems has already been finished. Objetivos del Proyecto 1) Generación de una base de información puntual georeferenciada de inventarios de vegetación. 2) Depuración de cartografía digital de pisos vegetacionales. 3) Estandarizar la clasificación de Pisos de vegetación con los estándares de metadatos de IABIN y con la clasificación de Sistemas Ecológicos de NatureServe. Productos y resultados esperados De acuerdo con los objetivos mencionados, se espera obtener los siguientes resultados: - Una base de datos georeferenciada de puntos con inventarios de vegetación chilena - Una cartografía depurada de pisos de vegetación de Chile (Luebert & Pliscoff 2006) - Un esquema de equivalencias entre la clasificación de pisos de vegetación de Chile (Luebert & Pliscoff 2006) y la clasificación de sistemas ecológicos de NatureServe (2003). -

Glacier - climate modeling in Las Leñas, Central Andes of Argentina Master’s Thesis Faculty of Science University of Bern presented by Philippe Wäger 2009 Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Heinz Veit Institute of Geography and Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research Advisor: Dr. Christoph Kull Institute of Geography and Organ consultatif sur les changements climatiques OcCC Abstract Studies investigating late Pleistocene glaciations in the Chilean Lake District (~40-43°S) and in Patagonia have been carried out for several decades and have led to a well established glacial chronology. Knowledge about the timing of late Pleistocene glaciations in the arid Central Andes (~15-30°S) and the mechanisms triggering them has also strongly increased in the past years, although it still remains limited compared to regions in the Northern Hemisphere. The Southern Central Andes between 31-40°S are only poorly investigated so far, which is mainly due to the remoteness of the formerly glaciated valleys and poor age control. The present study is located in Las Leñas at 35°S, where late Pleistocene glaciation has left impressive and quite well preserved moraines. A glacier-climate model (Kull 1999) was applied to investigate the climate conditions that have triggered this local last glacial maximum (LLGM) advance. The model used was originally built to investigate glacio-climatological conditions in a summer precipitation regime, and all previous studies working with it were located in the arid Central Andes between ~17- 30°S. Regarding the methodology applied, the present study has established the southernmost study site so far, and the first lying in midlatitudes with dominant and regular winter precipitation from the Westerlies. -

The Andean mountain cat (Oreailurus jacobita) in the central Andes: an attempt of status assessment by field interviews. I was able to conduct a preliminary survey in July 1998 in several protected areas in Chile and Bolivia. Here are the results.
