The Mountain Research Initiative (MRI): What Comes Next?
Mountain Views (Nov 2012) The Mountain Research Initiative (MRI): What Comes Next? The Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) promotes and coordinates global change resesarch in mountains around the world. It arose from the International Geosphere and Biosphere (IGBP), and the International Human Dimensions (IHDP) Programs in 2002, is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and is based at the Geography Institute of the University of Bern. The MRI continually searches for the next steps in promoting global change research in mountains. Since the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) renewed the MRI's funding in 2010, the MRI has pursued its program of global and regional networking activities, synthesis workshops, and new communication modes, but is going beyond them now to investigate more sustained efforts. While any research into global change in mountains represents progress, research that adds to an understanding of the "whole system" - the coupled human-natural system within mountains as it is embedded within the planetary earth system of atmosphere, oceans and continents - is one of MRI's principal scientific goals. The MRI makes liberal use of the "analytical structure" of its parent scientific organization, the Global Land Project, as it captures the linkages and the embedded-ness and speaks as well to the evolution of the whole system toward or away from sustainability. The Global Land Project analytical structure (GLP 2005) This emphasis on whole systems creates a certain tension in MRI's work, as research by its analytic nature, tends to focus on mechanisms and parts of systems. This is as it should be: to create an integrated understanding, one must have parts to integrate! Thus, while encouraging research on specific parts of the coupled human-natural system, MRI must at the same time promote the continual interrogation of how these parts come together to create a whole system. -

Tang A Review of CMS History in China (1810-1942) : Its Success and Failure The earliest record of CMS in China should be dated back to 1801 during the Treaty of Nanjiang (formerly known as Nanking). Under the Treaty, China had to open its ports of Shanghai, Ningbo (formerly Ningpo), Guangzhou (formerly Canton), Amoy and Hong Kong on the eastern coast for trade. This gave opportunity for Mission to China. Eventually, Church Missionary Society (CMS) along with many other mission bodies started to build their churches and hospitals in 1844. Bishop George Smith and T.M. McClatchie were the first CMS missionaries sent to China, based in Shanghai in 1844.1 Over the years, CMS had been mainly focused on the mission of health and education, both the needy part of China at that time. The first education project was started in Ningpo in 1847, followed by a medical project in Fujian (formerly Fukien) in 1849. It was a sort of pioneer project for CMS during that time as CMS used to send the clergymen for ministerial mission instead of sending 'laity' for mission. Mission in China in some ways 'altered' CMS’s traditional mission policy. The first five Chinese converts of the CMS China Mission were baptised in 1851 -- two in Ningbo and three in Shanghai. For a long time the Chinese church was under the supervision of missionaries, with all the ordination proposed from the Church of England until the 1920s when they started to consider handing over the church leadership to Chinese. -

Chongqing is situated in the east of southwest China, about 2,500km up the Yangtze River from Shanghai. Under its jurisdiction there are 40 districts, cities and counties. It covers an area of 82,000 square kilometres with a total population of 31 million. An estimated 6 million people live in urban Chongqing city. Downtown Chongqing lies at the point where the Yangtze River and the Jialing River merge. Known as the Mountain City, the whole city is built against a backdrop of hills and rivers, characterized by zig-zagging roads and overlapping houses. It is also known as one of the four Furnace Cities for its hot summers and the Foggy City for its misty winters. The phenology of landscape plural can predict the urban environment and guide the development of the city. The aim of the study is to get the relationship between urban environment and plant phenology. The methods monitored the phenology of the environment and garden plants in the main urban area of Chongqing from 2016 to 2019. And it is concluded that artificial light of garden lighting is between 1000 to 4000 Lx in Chongqing, and the application of LED (Light Emitting Diode) is the highest number. At the same time, the flowering period of trees is more susceptible than that of the shrubs; the flowering period of plants is more susceptible than the evergreen plants; and the fruit period of trees is earlier; the flowering period is prolonged. The flowering stage and flowering period of pruning plants are longer than the plants under natural state. This data should prove useful for future research of the subject. Since 1950, the flowering period of urban garden plants has moved 1~3 days ahead in Europe (Menzel, 2002), and from 1902 to 2006, the flowing period for the shrub species in nearly 1/4 of North America also came much earlier (Neil, 2010). -
