Chapter 11 The Book to Come: Literary Advertising and the Poetics of the Prospectus David Duff An important but often overlooked part of the ‘communications circuit’ stud- ied by book historians is the prospectus, a marketing device widely used in the book trade of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.1 A prospectus was a type of printed advertisement for a projected book, book series, periodi- cal, or other publishing venture, circulated prior to publication in order to at- tract readers and obtain advance orders and sometimes prepayment. Prospec- tuses played a key role in subscription publishing, a method of publication used for most periodicals and for certain types of book, especially expensive, illustrated books and multi-volume books or book series such as collected edi- tions, encyclopædias, and anthologies. Typically, a prospectus described both the intellectual content of the work and the physical form of it, explaining the rationale for publication and offering information about format, typeface, pa- per quality, binding (if used), pricing, where the order could be placed, and how and when it would be delivered, these transactional details often appear- ing in a sub-headed ‘Conditions of Sale’ section. Sometimes one or more speci- men pages were included and the prospectus was printed in the same format as the work it announced, making it a physical sample of the work as well as an abstract description of it.2 If an order was placed, the prospectus became in effect a contract of sale and might even be used as a receipt, some prospec- tuses carrying a blank space where the subscriber’s name could be added alongside a signature from the author to authenticate the order and confirm payment had been taken.3 1 For the ‘communications circuit,’ see Robert Darnton, “What is the History of Books?” Daeda- lus 111.3 (1982): 65–83, 69. -

Sharing Innovative Approaches to Delivering 16-19 Study Programme Principles Banbury and Bicester College Enterprise and Employability “At the heart of our model for Study Programmes is the development of employability skills through the learning company concept.” Rose Turner, Principal Banbury and Bicester College is part of Activate Learning1, a group which combines secondary, further and higher education along with workforce training, commercial business and social enterprise. The Activate Learning group was formed in September 2013, following the merger of Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, and Reading College in 2010. The group comprises Banbury and Bicester College, City of Oxford College, Reading College and Activate Enterprise. Activate Learning has a chief executive officer; each college has a principal and Activate Enterprise a director. In 2012/13 the three colleges recruited around 14,500 learners, two thirds of whom were adults on part-time courses. Most learners, currently, are on foundation and intermediate programmes and the group have around 1,800 apprentices in five subject areas. Oxfordshire and Berkshire are affluent counties with rates of unemployment below national averages. However, across both counties, there are areas of educational and social deprivation and the profile of learners attending the colleges reflects this. GCSE attainment in local secondary schools is broadly at, or just below, national averages, and many learners come to study and train at the colleges with attainment below national averages. The proportion of the population of Oxfordshire and Berkshire from minority ethnic backgrounds varies from around 25% in Reading to below 5% in Banbury and Bicester. However, the proportion of learners from minority ethnic backgrounds in the colleges matches or exceeds these local proportions. -

Herbarium News University of Reading Herbarium Newsletter Issue No. 45, December 2008. ISSN 0953-0080 URL: www.herbarium.reading.ac.uk INTRODUCTION Welcome to another Christmas Herbarium News. As with every edition we have much to report! During the last year a number of important things have happened, not least the refurbishment of two of our taxonomy laboratories (more details below). We have also changed the name of our building from ‘Plant Science Laboratories’ to ‘The Harborne Building’ to commemorate Jeffrey Harborne, FRS, our late lamented phytochemist. This is in line with University policy to name buildings after people, and the new biomolecular sciences building (behind Chemistry) for our medical and pharmacy researchers will be called the Hopkins Building, after the late Professor Harold Hopkins, sometime Professor in Physics here who developed fibre optics and the endoscope. The Herbarium has been especially busy having now completed the incorporation of the Herbarium from the University of Southampton, again see below. HERBARIUM REVIEW AND STRATEGY Our School of Biological Sciences recently undertook a review of the Herbarium, along with the Cole Museum of Zoology and a number of other issues. Ours was led by Professor Philip John with Professor Martin Bell (Archaeology), Kate Arnold-Foster (Head of the University’s Museums and Special Collections Service and Dr Karen Henderson (Head of Technical Services, Biological Sciences). They were very positive and have recommended that a Herbarium Strategy be drawn up for the next five years, currently in progress. Senate also positively noted the Herbarium’s growing level of engagement with the University and the likely increase in the commercial value of this resource. -
