Art class is creating great pieces of Art work!

Students in Mrs. Dolezal's Art Class are creating Alebrijas, tradition- al Mexican folk art animals (also the creatures/spirit animals seen in the movie "Coco"). Students have learned about the history and cultural traditions surrounding the creation of Alebrijes. In this lesson, they are learning Elements of Art such as; Form, Shape and Col- or. They used drawing prompts to design and sketch their creatures, combining two or three animals in- to one. Then they created a 3-D version of their drawings using clay. Next, they painted their clay creatures using the bright colors and patterns used by traditional Mexican Artists who made the original Alebrijas.

Look Both Ways, by Jason Reynolds

Ten short stories paint a picture of what happens one particular afternoon after the dismissal bell at Latimer Middle School. Each tale focuses on one student or group of friends. The magic of this book is Reynolds's ability to weave the same teachers and various stu- dents in and out of the ten stories. Some backstory in each piece puts the characters' actions into perspec- tive, with each entry ending with a bit of a surprise.
