Introduction One of the most significant developments in the history of human being is the invention of a way of keeping records of human knowledge, thoughts and ideas. The storage of knowledge is a sign of civilization, which has its origins in ancient visual languages e.g. in the cuneiform scripts and hieroglyphs until the achievement of phonetic languages with the invention of Gutenberg press. In 1926, the work of several thinkers such as Edouard Le Roy, Vladimir Ver- nadsky and Teilhard de Chardin led to the concept of noosphere, thus the idea that human cognition and knowledge transforms the biosphere coming to be something like the planet’s thinking layer. At present, is commonly accepted by some thinkers that the Internet is the medium that brings life to noosphere. Hereinafter, this essay will assume that the words Internet and noosphere refer to the same concept, analogy which will be justified later. 2 In 2005 Ray Kurzweil published the book The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology predicting an exponential increase of computers and also an exponential progress in different disciplines such as genetics, nanotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence. The exponential evolution of these technologies is what is called Kurzweil’s “Law of Accelerating Returns”. The result of this rapid progress will lead to human beings what is known as tech- nological singularity. -

A New Dimension in Evolution: Impacts of Human Consciousness on Sustainability—and Beyond Charles M. McKenna, Jr. “The whole future of the Earth…seems to me to depend on the awakening of our faith in the future.” Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (Letters to Mme Georges-Marie Haardt) From de Chardin’s The Future of Man – 1964 Abstract—Starting with the concepts of the “noosphere” – the sphere of thought – and the evolution of consciousness developed by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin in the first half of the last century, we will introduce a hypothesis declaring the interdependence of the noosphere with global systems, and extrapolate to new perceptions that these concepts, and others which seem to flow from them, could contribute to transforming historic views into more hopeful visions of the future of human development and life on Earth. Just as mental outlook plays an important part in each person’s life path, so also do the ideas and world-views – limiting or expanding – held by the global community affect the assumptions, boundaries, and decisions of the human family as we discover who we are in an ever-evolving existence of increasing knowledge and change. Approaching the issue of sustainability from an engineer’s point of view, we quickly see, as stated in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Implementation Plan for its newly promulgated Environmental Operating Principles, that it demands “…a new view of engineering that embraces the physical and biological sciences as well as those of the social and economic disciplines. …This shift in our understanding of engineering will be huge.” The paper will discuss three additional hypotheses as part of the movement toward sustainability; “moving from passive-reactive to active-creative world views,” “the breakdown of the false dualism between nature and human activity,” and “human thought and breaking the glass barrier between historical world views and a new paradigm that opens the door to new opportunities,” and will go on to discuss policy initiatives and technology development that would align with these new perspectives. -

Teilhard de Chardin Toward a Science Charged With Faith (1881-1955) http://www.crosscurrents.org/chardin.htm Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) stands among the very few leaders of thought in this century to integrate pure scientific research with a religious vocation. At an early point in his career this paleontologist and Jesuit priest made it his personal mission to reconstruct the most basic Christian doctrines from the perspectives of science and, at the same time, to reconstruct science from the perspectives of faith. He would do this by overthrowing all the barriers that had been erected between science and religion in the past one hundred years. He would take the lessons learned from the study of nature as the foundation on which to reconstruct the Christian faith. He would single-handedly remake all the dogmas of his own Catholic Church, and he would at the same time remake the world of modern science on the model suggested by his personal experience of God. Teilhard was seen by the Vatican as a threat to the integrity of the faith. Rome insisted that his religious writings should not be published; he was forbidden to teach or even to speak publicly on religious subjects; he was banished from his native country. Yet his ideas were disseminated informally and sometimes secretly by friends and colleagues in the church. He became a hero and a role model for a whole generation of younger priests and theologians. He set the stage for the renewal movements which finally came to flower in the era of Vatican II. -

The following article is composed of an introductory abstract of a paper completed in 1938, and recently published in translation in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Sciences (vol. 35, pp. 483-517), under the editorship of Professor G. E. Hutchinson, and a new essay, written in 1943 and translated from the Russian manuscript by Dr. George Vernadsky of Yale University. The two contributions together present the general intellectual outlook of one of the most remarkable scientific leaders of the present century. The translation of the quotation under the frontispiece (from a letter to Professor A. Petrunkevitch) is as follows: I look forward with great optimism. Rockefeller for a panel on “The Spirit of the Earth: Global Ethics and a Sustainable Future” Teilhard 2005, United Nations, New York, April 8, 2005 It was in the early 1960s as a divinity student in the classroom of the Christian theologian Daniel Day Williams at Union Theological Seminary in New York that I first encountered the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Williams’ theology drew heavily on the work of a number of evolutionary thinkers and process philosophers, especially Alfred North Whitehead. Like Whitehead Teilhard did his most creative work in evolutionary philosophy and theology during the 1920s and 1930s. This was a period that produced a number of highly creative evolutionary philosophers including Henri Bergson in France, Samuel Alexander in England, and John Dewey in the United States. They were all deeply influenced by science and the experimental method of knowledge, and they all sought in diverse ways—especially Teilhard—to harmonize science, philosophy, and religion in an effort to heal a major split in the modern psyche. This essay has been prepared as a contribution to “The Spirit of the Earth: Global Ethics and a Sustainable Future,” one of a number of panels and events organized as part of a special commemoration of the life and thought of Teilhard. It focuses on the Earth Charter as an articulation of the emerging new global ethics and as a contribution to what Teilhard called “the formation of a veritable spirit of the earth.”1 Teilhard views the evolution of life on Earth as continuous with the great evolutionary process that is the universe. -
