URBAN FRINGE FARMLAND The Urban Fringe Farmlands are a lowland character type, located in the north and west of the study area, surrounding East Kilbride and Hamilton with smaller areas around Carluke and Larkhall. They mainly merge into Plateau Farmland areas on the upper edges (with which they bear many similarities) and Incised River Valleys and urban areas on the lower edges. The type is distributed across the northern part of South Lanarkshire, in the Clyde Basin Farmlands. There are three landscape character areas: (i) East Kilbride and Hamilton; (ii) Carluke; (iii) Larkhall/ Ferniegair and Calderglen. INCISED RIVER VALLEYS The Incised River Valleys are a lowland character type. They encompass the main river systems of the Clyde and its tributaries located in the Clyde Basin Farmlands and are incised into the Plateau, Rolling and Urban Fringe Farmlands. They are characterised by steep, densely wooded sides, enclosure and smaller scale, with small settlements located in the wider areas of the Clyde valley. The lower parts of the valleys pass between the main urban areas in the north of the local authority area. Six landscape character areas are identified: (i) River Clyde (Hamilton-Bothwell); (ii) Mid Clyde Valley; (iii) Rotten Calder; (iv) Avon

    The Tinto Parishes Cairngryffe Libberton and Quothquan Symington Parish Profile 2013 What we hope for in our new minister We look forward very much to welcoming a minister. We look forward too, to the gifts that that person will bring and which will enhance our Christian experience. Each congregation has well tried and well-loved practices and we would hope to share and expand these as well as exploring innovative approaches and styles of worship. We are conscious that many find change challenging and we hope that we can work together to address this. Our hope always is to further God’s work in our communities and constantly to maintain active outreach to all. Accordingly we seek a minister who will provide leadership and will identify with people of our churches and villages. That person we hope will recognise the talent, commitment and goodwill already present within our membership and help us to build further upon these. We would look for support for the congregations as they continue to make outreach to their individual communities. We have experienced limited response in the past but hope for pastoral leadership in continuing this work and attracting more (possibly younger) members with enthusiasm and energy. At all times we would hope to continue to maintain caring contact with those who require support and we see the minister as having a strong locus in this. We anticipate that the minister will encourage and support the office bearers in each congregation and be prepared to sustain existing delegated practice in areas such as visiting the elderly and housebound, organising worship through teams of members, conducting Praise and Prayer meetings.

    3 13-5 , (1998) 8 12 Scot, Antiq Soc Proc The excavation and survey of prehistoric enclosures at Blackshouse Burn, Lanarkshire Olivia Lelong* & Tony Pollard* with contributions by A Crone, D Jordan & S Ramsay ABSTRACT Limited excavations were carried out in 1985-6 on a large, subcircular enclosure and a smaller adjacent one, built on the edge of an ancient bog, on Pettinain Hill in Lanarkshire. These investigations established that the larger monument had been built by erecting a double row of timber posts and piling a stony bank between the two rows; the preserved, waterlogged stumps of oak posts were found in post-holes on either side of the bank. The bank was later elaborated, with stones pitched around the standing posts and, in a final stage, it was capped once the posts had decayed. Excavations on the bank defining the much smaller, adjacent enclosure, built just within the bog, found it had been built by digging holes in the peat and building a stone structure above. An oak post from the large enclosure was dated to 4035 + 55 BP (2697-2453 cal BC). The authors suggest the large monument had its origins in an early Neolithic tradition of transhumance and that its builders were drawn and held to the upland basin by the presence of water there. The excavation was directed by Peter Hill; the project has been funded throughout by Historic Scotland and its predecessor department (SDD/HBM). INTRODUCTION Described as 'one of the strangest monuments in Lanarkshire' (RCAHMS 1978, 78), the enormous, banked enclosure at Blackshouse Burn and a much smaller neighbouring enclosure lie in an upland basin in Upper Clydesdale (NGR: NS 9528 4046).

    Community and Enterprise Resources The State of South Lanarkshire’s Environment 2017 Summary The quality of the environment in which we live is important for our health and wellbeing. South Lanarkshire has a very rich and diverse environment which gives the area its unique character. Such an environment requires careful management in order to maintain and improve the area. This is the fifth comprehensive biennial State of the Environment Report for South Lanarkshire. The aim of the report is to provide quality data that facilitates evaluation of a range of environmental issues, identifies trends and provides an overall picture of the condition or state of South Lanarkshire’s environment. The state of the environment across South Lanarkshire is in many aspects relatively good. However, there are certain environmental issues where there is potential for improvement. These include those that can affect human health and the natural and built environment. The health of South Lanarkshire’s people is relatively poor and below the Scottish average for several key indicators. This is particularly evident within communities identified as economically, socially and environmentally deprived. However, the difference between South Lanarkshire and the national average continues to narrow. There is well documented evidence that environmental deprivation is related to health and health behaviour. Access to good quality greenspace and the wider countryside are important in promoting healthy lifestyles. The provision of greenspace and access to the core path network varies considerably across South Lanarkshire but is generally improving. Air quality within South Lanarkshire is considered relatively good, however, there are specific ‘hotspot’ areas closely associated with heavily congested roads where levels are poor.

  • 1 Undulating Farmland and Hills
    SNH National Landscape Character Assessment Landscape Character Type 210 UNDULATING FARMLAND AND HILLS Location and Context There are two areas of Undulating Farmland and Hills Landscape Character Type within the Glasgow and Clyde Valley. They are located in central and eastern South Lanarkshire between Douglas and Biggar, separated by the broad upland valley of the River Clyde and the Rounded Landmark Hills of Tinto and Dungavel. The area forms a transition between the Southern Uplands and the lower lying farmlands of the Clyde Basin; the Southern Upland Fault is close to the southern edge of this area. Key Characteristics A varied landform of rounded hills, ridges and undulating farmland. Transition between Plateau Farmland to the north and the higher Southern Uplands - Glasgow & Clyde Valley and Plateau Moorlands - Glasgow & Clyde Valley to the south and west. Farmland, mostly pastoral, with a notable range of tree and woodland cover. Distinctive pattern of shelterbelts and field boundaries on lower hill slopes. Some areas of coniferous woodland, larger in the south of the area. Becoming generally higher and more open with poorer pasture towards the south- west, although the highest hill, Black Mount is at the eastern reaches. Settlement is sparse and mostly consists of scattered farmsteads and very occasional small villages. Areas and features of historic and archaeological significance. A predominantly rural and pastoral character that contrasts with the busier adjacent river valleys. Views to distinctive hills nearby, the southern uplands beyond and, more closely, to adjacent wide upland river valleys.
