Abstract: The effects of sex, injuries, season and site on the growth of the spiny lobsters Panulirus gracilis, and P. inflatus, were studied through mark-recapture techniques in two sites with different ecological characteristics on the coast of Guerrero, México. Panulirus gracilis occurred in both sites, whereas P. inflatus occurred only in one site. All recaptured individuals were adults. Both species had similar intermolt periods, but P. gracilis had significantly higher growth rates (mm carapace length week-1) than P. inflatus as a result of a larger molt incre- ment. Growth rates of males were higher than those of females in both species owing to larger molt increments and shorter intermolt periods in males. Injuries had no effect on growth rates in either species. Individuals of P. gracilis grew faster in site 1 than in site 2. Therefore, the effect of season on growth of P. gracilis was analyzed separately in each site. In site 2, growth rates of P. gracilis were similar in summer and in winter, whereas in site 1 both species had higher growth rates in winter than in summer. -

ZOOBANK http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:74B93F4F-0E5E-4D69- A7F5-5F423DA3762E ABSTRACT A large number of specimens (2765) of the acorn barnacle Balanus trigonus Darwin, 1854, were observed on the spiny lobster Panulirus gracilis Streets, 1871, in western Mexico, including recently settled cypris (1019 individuals or 37%) and encrusted specimens (1746) of different sizes: <1.99 mm, 88%; 1.99 to 2.82 mm, 8%; >2.82 mm, 4%). Cypris settled predominantly on the carapace (67%), mostly on the gastric area (40%), on the left or right orbital areas (35%), on the head appendages, and on the pereiopods 1–3. Encrusting individuals were mostly small (84%); medium-sized specimens accounted for 11% and large for 5%. On the cephalothorax, most were observed in branchial (661) and orbital areas (240). Only 40–41 individuals were found on gastric and cardiac areas. Some individuals (246), mostly small (95%), were observed on the dorsal portion of somites. -

The lobster fishery in the Gulf of California and the south-central region of the western coast of Mexico consists of small-scale artisanal activity supported by Panulirus gracilis and P. inflatus, with an annual average catch of 132 ton. The present study analyzes the landing composition of this fishery and the population structure of P. gracilis. Carapace lengths (CL) for this species ranged from 35 to 125 mm, and the most frequent sizes were between 60 and 85 mm. The size distribution was approximately normal. This implies that the fishery is composed of several size classes, with annual recruitment to the fishing areas. -

Marine Biodiversity Records (2016) 9:48 DOI 10.1186/s41200-016-0030-9 MARINE RECORD Open Access First record of an adult Galapagos slipper lobster, Scyllarides astori, (Decapoda, Scyllaridae) from Isla del Coco, Eastern Tropical Pacific Juan Carlos Azofeifa-Solano1*, Manon Fourriére2,3 and Patrick Horgan4 Abstract The Galapagos Slipper lobster, Scyllarides astori, has been reported from rocky reefs along the Eastern Tropical Pacific: the Gulf of California, the Galapagos Archipelago and mainland Ecuador. Although larval stage S. astori has been found in other localities throughout this range, there are no records of adults inhabiting waters between these three locations. Here we present the first record of an adult S. astori from Isla del Coco and Costa Rican Pacific waters. The single specimen, a male, was hand-collected within a coral reef in Pájara islet. This finding increases the reported lobster species richness of Costa Rican Pacific waters to six species and expands the adult geographic range of S. astori to Isla del Coco. California Spiny Lobster Scientific Name: Panulirus Interruptus Range
Fishery-at-a-Glance: California Spiny Lobster Scientific Name: Panulirus interruptus Range: Spiny Lobster range from Monterey, California southward to at least as far as Magdalena Bay, Baja California. The physical center of the range is within Mexico, and population density and fishery productivity is highest in this area. Habitat: As juveniles (less than 3 years of age), Spiny Lobster live in coastal rubble beds, but as adults, they are found on hard bottomed or rocky-reef habitat kelp forests. Size (length and weight): Adult Spiny Lobsters average 2 pounds in weight and about 12 inches total length, with males slightly larger than females. Adults more than 5 pounds are currently considered trophy individuals, although records exist from a century ago of 26 pound, 3 foot long lobsters. Life span: Spiny Lobsters can live up to 30 to 50 years. Reproduction: Spiny Lobsters mature at about 5 years of age, or 2.5-inch carapace length. They have a complex, 2-year reproductive cycle from mating to the settlement of juvenile lobsters. Fecundity increases with size, and females produce one brood of eggs per year. Prey: Spiny Lobsters are omnivorous, and act as important keystone predators within the southern California nearshore ecosystem. Adults forage at night for algae, fish, and many marine invertebrates. Predators: Predators of juvenile Spiny Lobsters include California Sheephead, Cabezon, rockfishes, Kelp Bass, Giant Sea Bass, and octopus. Predators of adult lobsters tend to be the larger individuals such as male California Sheephead and Giant Sea Bass. Fishery: The commercial fishery accounted for approximately 312 metric tons (688,000 lb) in ex- vessel landings and $12.7 million in ex-vessel value during the 2017-2018 fishing season. -

For the 1989-1990 and 1990-1991 fishing seasons, the mean monthly sizes of males were between 70.18 ± 11.74 and 81.11 ± 6.76 mm CL, whereas females averaged from 73.60 ± 8.95 to 80.28 ± 7.53 mm CL. Power-law relationships between carapace length (CL in mm) and total weight (TW in g) were determined, resulting in the following equations: PT = 0.0021 CL2.7689 for males and PT = 0.0009 CL3.0038 for females. During certain periods of the year, males dominated the catch; however, the overall annual male:female ratio was near 1:1.
