What Walworth Wants Walworth is an urban area located south of the River Thames, in the London Borough of Southwark. What Walworth Wants is a catalogue of projects that aims to celebrate Walworth’s unique character, help build resilience of what exists today and contribute to knitting together gaps between development. The catalogue focuses on Walworth’s high streets: Walworth Road, East Street, Old Kent Road, and their surrounding neighbourhoods. The proposals put forward in this catalogue build on, support and encourage activity that is already taking place on the ground. They vary from the micro to the large-scale, from Strategy quick wins to long-term aims for growth. It Steps Next includes recommendations that range from Area Proposals public realm enhancements to business support, from wayfinding interventions to meanwhile uses in underused premises. What Walworth Wants has been designed as a public tool to be used by local residents, community groups, public authorities and other stakeholders to take ownership and co-deliver projects. It is hoped that complementary projects can also be considered for the wider neighbouhood. The potential projects have been developed in collaboration with a wide community stakeholder group. In combination they form a cohesive strategy and vision for Walworth. East Street Market entrance on Walworth Road Walworth history Walworth has a rich history and its cultural and industrial heritage forms a key part of its identity today. Walworth has been in existence since ancient Roman and Anglo Saxon times. The historic village centre was located where East Street Market meets Walworth Road today. Walworth’s rich Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian heritage is apparent today in the urban grain, the street layout and in its architecture, especially along Walworth Road. East Street Market is one of the oldest markets in London and has existed in one form or the other since the 16th century. It is still referred coloquially as ‘The Lane’, a reference to its historic location on East Strategy Lane. Steps Next Area Proposals Old Kent Road also has a long history dating back to Roman times when it formed part of Watling Street. Remnants of its development during the Georgian period are apparent in the listed building ‘The White House’ and in the Dun Cow pubhouse (now a doctor’s surgery). Significant infrastructure developed along Old Kent Road, including a large gasworks that was founded by the South Metropolitan Gas Works Company in 1834 and the Bricklayer’s Arms Station by the South Eastern Railway in 1844. Over time it was converted into a goods depot and more recently into a light industrial estate along Mandela Way. East Street Market, 1910 (Source: Now & Then Walworth) Tower Hamlets To The City Walworth Tower of Covent Garden London today The catalogue’s focus area of Walworth The is framed by Walworth Road to the West Shard and Old Kent Road to the East. East Street To Elephant & Castle Westminster forms the key link between these two high Southwark Park streets. Elephant and Castle Station is a WALWORTH key transport hub located just north-west Old Kent of the area. Old Kent Road forms a primary East Street Road transport corridor and is a major link between Walworth Burgess Park central, Inner and Outer London. The PLANTS In 1086 the Domesday book described the village life in Waleorde (Walworth) with corn growing and cows grazing. The peaches, apples and grapes grew locally in orchards and market gardens and reference the history of the area 'feeding London' from Roman times into the 1700s. They also link to the produce sold on East Street Market stalls today. Tulips were grown by James Maddock (1718-1786) in Walworth and at one time he had more than 800 different varieties in his fields. The poppy is a symbol of remembrance and hope and relates to those that signed up to join the armed forces during WW1 at the Walworth Town Hall. Echinacea is a reference to London’s oldest herbalist, Baldwin’s of Walworth Road, which has been in business since 1844. The dahlias date from 1797 when botanist Samuel Curtis issued the ‘Beauties of Flora’ a series of two floral engravings including two plates of dahlias from his own collection grown in Walworth. INTRODUCTION Hidden beneath the surface of the Central London Thames floodplain lie numerous, deep, crater- like pits known as 'anomalous buried hollows’ (or sometimes drift filled or scour filled hollows). They penetrate deep into the London Clay and sometimes beyond. Most of these hollows are filled with sands and gravels. They are believed to have formed under sub-arctic, peri-glacial conditions. One of these hollows, The Rockingham Street Anomaly, is situated in the London Borough of Southwark, close to Elephant and Castle. It is nearly 300m wide and over 19m deep. The Rockingham Street Anomaly is exceptional in that unlike most of the other hollows, a substantial part of the fill comprises a deep accumulation of peat. The peat was first identified during the construction of a sewer in the early 20th century and the general shape of the hollow and presence of peat have been confirmed by subsequent boreholes in the area.
