Halloween is a holiday deeply rooted in traditon, but those traditons difer depending on where you are in the world. Here, children dress up as fictonal heroes, scary monsters, fairytale princesses, or any other character that strikes their imaginaton, and they trick-or-treat in local neighborhoods. Elsewhere, they do things a litle diferently... 4 FOR MORE INFORMATION: CLICK HERE TO CALL US, OR CONTACT YOUR TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL. IRELAND Considered the “birthplace of modern Halloween,” Ireland can trace its holiday roots all the way back to ancient Celtc and pagan rituals and a festval known as Samhain. It was believed that, during this tme, the boundaries between our world and the “Otherworld” could more easily be crossed, leading to the presence of spirits, fairies, and other supernatural beings. Back then, sacred bonfires were lit to cleanse the spirits; today, Ireland stll celebrates Halloween with a symbolic bonfire, traditonal Irish foods, like barmbrack (fruitcake), and games. MEXICO Celebrated throughout Mexico and parts of Latn America, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a two-day period to honor those who have passed away. It’s believed that the “Gates of Heaven” open up at midnight on October 31 to reunite the souls of children with their families on Earth for 24 hours. The following day, the souls of adults come down to join in the celebratons, which date back to ancient Pre-Columbian traditons. In-home altars are made, full of fruit, peanuts, turkey, and a special holiday bread called pan de muerto (bread of the dead). JAPAN Not all Halloween traditons have ancient origins, as is the case in Kawasaki, Japan. Only 21 years old, the Kawasaki Halloween Parade gathers nearly 4,000 costumed Halloween enthusiasts from all over the world each year. And if you think the turnout is impressive, just wait untl you see the qualit of the costumes—ranging from fun and flirt to downright terrifing. Partcipaton in this global event is selectve, due to strict standards and guidelines, and will cost you ¥1,000. Watching the parade, however, is free, and it’s a sight to behold. ITALY All Saints’ Day is celebrated all over the world, but in Italy, it’s a natonal holiday. Known as Ognissant, this day honors the lives of saints who died for their Catholic beliefs as well as the souls of deceased family members. In the days leading up to November 1, people begin leaving fresh flowers on the graves of loved ones, old acquaintances, and even complete strangers—turning the country’s cemeteries into colorful gardens. On the day of, the streets of Italy are bare, as everyone atends Mass and joins in a feast with their families, making sure to set a place at the table for any spirits who may pay a visit. POLAND You won’t see a more beautful sight in early November than the countless candles illuminatng Poland’s graveyards on Zaduszki, the Polish version of All Saints’ Day. Why candles instead of flowers? Since the Poles believe that this is a tme for the souls of the dead to return home, the candles are lit to guide their way. This day of solemn celebraton culminates in a traditonal evening meal of ritual bread, spoken invocatons, and generatonal dishes such as kasza gryczana (buckwheat groats). The dead are asked to join the meal, and the first servings always go onto the empt plates reserved for the spirits.
