If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication Legitimating Post-Fordism: A Critique of Anthony Giddens’ Later Works Anthony King Introduction Although Anthony Giddens describes his approach as “social” rather than “critical” theory, and although there is little obvious Frankfurt School influence in his writing, he believes “social theory is inevitably critical theory.”1 While he might aim at such a critical position, it is far from obvious that he succeeds. On the contrary, his later writings have become an apology for the status quo.2 Failing to consider his prejudices, perhaps because he thinks critique is inevitable, Giddens has increasingly vindicated predominant relations of domination. But Giddens’ structuration theory constitutes a distinct body of texts, published between the mid-1970s and 1984. Moreover, the first mention of “structuration” appears in The Class Structure of Advanced Societies, which Baert consid- ers part of his early period. Dividing Giddens into an early and a later period, situating structuration theory at the end of his earlier period, is more straightforward, and reflects the similar concerns and style of Giddens’ writing from the 1960s to 1984. The key division on which this paper is based, and on which it is in agreement with both Baert and Jeffrey Alex- ander’s “Critical Reflections on Reflexive Modernization,” in Theory, Culture and Society, Vol. 13, No. 4 (1996), is that there is a demonstrable divide in Giddens’ writing after 1984. 61 62 ANTHONY KING re-create themselves, while reproducing the global system that has liber- ated them. His celebration of the individual echoes dominant free market principles, which privilege choice and consumption, and have been cen- tral to the post-Fordist transformations in the West. Structuration Theory Giddens’ first serious works in the early 1970s examined the ways in which Marx, Weber and Durkheim can contribute to an the analysis of late 20th century society. Out of these works emerged a more focused the- oretical interest in structure and agency and, from the mid-1970s onwards, his structuration theory sought to overcome the dualism of structure and agency through a synthesis of functionalism, structuralism and interpretivist traditions. Allegedly, functionalists like Parsons and structuralists like Levi-Strauss had overemphasized objective factors in social life, at the cost of the individual agent, while the interactionist and interpretive tradition, represented by Goffman and Garfinkel, did exactly the opposite, overestimating the importance of individual agents. Structuration theory was meant to explain how social relations stretch across time and space to reproduce the social system through meaningful individual action.3 To that end, Giddens postulated the notion of “the dual- ity of structure,” whereby structure,4 consisting of “virtual” rules and resources orienting individual action, is both the medium and the outcome of individual actions.5 These virtual rules are problematic, but the role they play in structuration theory is important. When individuals act, they draw on these virtual rules to carry out certain social practices, thereby repro- ducing the rules which were the medium of their practice in the first place. Giddens illustrates this duality by the favored example of language use: “when I utter a grammatical English sentence in casual conversation, I contribute to the reproduction of the English language as a whole.”6 For Giddens, individuals do not merely reproduce structure, the rules which 3. LEGITIMATING POST-FORDISM 63 inform action, but also the system of enduring social institutions, because the rules ensure the appropriate routines for the system’s reproduction. By drawing on the rules appropriate to the institutions in which individuals find themselves, they reproduce those institutions. There is a duality, not only of structure (rules and resources), but also of the social system (insti- tutions), where the system’s properties become the medium and the out- come of individual action. “One of the main propositions of structuration theory is that the rules and resources drawn upon in the production and reproduction of social action are at the same time the means of system reproduction (duality of structure).”7 Although, at first, it is only the rules that are reproduced in social practice, Giddens assumes that these rules are unproblematically connected to the wider system and, therefore, that the system is, more or less, automatically reproduced by individual practice. For the most part, Giddens’ structuration theory is concerned with the system’s reproduction through individual practice, even though many of his critics wrongly argue that structuration theory ignores the social system.8 The centrality of the individual, however, does appear at certain moments. Having argued that the individual must be bound to the system through structure, Giddens insists that “it is a necessary feature of action that, at any point in time, the agent ‘could have acted otherwise’.”9 This contradicts the rest of structuration theory, which explicitly limits the randomness of indi- vidual action through “structure” and appears in Giddens’ writing as an unfounded ideological assertion of Western liberal values.10 Thus, Mestro- vic has argued that Giddens’ appeal to the persistence of the free, autono- mous individual in the face of the “juggernaut of modernity” is an act of optimistic bad faith, where Giddens, an optimistic modernist, refuses to accept the darker implications of modernity (which, in fact, he always rec- ognizes).11 For Mestrovic, Giddens cannot accept the implications of his own theory or the reality of modern society, which substantially curtail indi- vidual freedom. As the liberated individual becomes central, Giddens himself becomes an apologist for post-Fordism. Post-Fordism By the mid-1970s, the Keynesian and Fordist systems of regulation and production were becoming obsolete. As the long post-war boom ended, the consumer market became saturated, multinationals became increasingly dominant, and Western states found themselves unable to manage the economy and to mediate between labor and capital. As Hayek argued, Keynesian efforts to sustain full employment stimulated inflation, which jeopardized the very jobs the state was meant to defend. The mas- sive inflation caused by the 1972-73 oil crises rendered Fordism and Key- nesianism unviable and, from the mid- to late-1970s, there was a move toward new post-Fordist regimes, at the forefront of which were Reagan- ite America and Thatcherite Britain.12 Although it is dangerous to differ- entiate too sharply between this post-Fordist transformation

As such, it is thought to have characterized much of early 20th century expansion of public interest and state responsibility into previously non-politicized areas of private life, especially when deceptive and/or technological in nature. It has also been seen as an expression of mechanistic “modernity” and “technocracy.” Through a comparative and conceptual histoire croisée of social engineering this dissertation studies how this concept was “spoken” in Sweden and the USA circa 1890-1950. The comparison shows that social engineering rhetoric emphasized the role of human agency and voluntarism in social change, rather than social laws or mechanistic determinism.

    Volume 15, Number 1 27 Beck's Risk Society and Giddens' Search for Ontological Security: A Comparative Analysis Between the Anthroposophical Society and the Assemblies of God Alphia Possamai-Inesedy University of Western Sydney There is a contention by social theorists such as Beck, Giddens, Bauman and Lash that contemporary Western society is in a transitional period in which risks have proliferated as an outcome of modernisation. In accordance with these changes individuals' sense ofselfhood have moved toward being more sensitive as to what they define as risks, such as threats to their health, as economic security or emotional wellbeing than they were in previous eras. Living in such a world can lead individuals to what Giddens would term ontological insecurity. Obsessive exaggeration of risks to personal existence, extreme introspection and moral vacuity are characteristics of the ontologically insecure individual. The opposite condition, ontological security, when achieved, leaves the individual with a sense of continuity and stability, which enables him or her to cope effectively with risk situations, personal tensions and anxiety. This emergent field of study in sociology has nevertheless poorly addressed religious issues; as if these social researchers have omitted parts of the religious aspects ofcontemporary society. This article attempts to fill this lacuna and explores the notion of risk society and ontological security with that of postmodern religion/spiritualities. Two case studies of the Anthroposophical society and Pentecostalism aid in this task. UlrichBeck(1992; 1994; 1995; 1996)andAnthonyGiddens(1990; 1991; 1994; 1999) while differing in their approaches, share similar concerns, foci and epistemological underpinnings in their work.

Slučaj Srbije ABSTRACT The paper offers an analysis of the factors of acceptance of postmaterialist values in Serbia. In accordance with the assumptions of Inglehart’s postmaterialist value theory, but also on the basis of empirical works of his critics, the correlation between postmaterialist values and four sociodemographic variables: age, level of education, level of family income and population size of settlement, was analyzed. The data, collected in a 2007 public opinion research including 1410 citizens of Serbia aged 15-89, indicate that all the analysed factors are important, but that age is the best predictor of these values. The conclusion discusses the adequacy of generation hypothesis as a mechanism of changing predominant values in a society and the explanatory power of the analysed sociodemographic model. KEY WORDS values, postmaterialism, generation hypothesis, Serbia APSTRAKT Predmet rada jeste analiza činilaca prihvatanja postmaterijalističkih vrednosti u Srbiji. U skladu sa pretpostavkama Inglhartove teorije postmaterijalizma, ali i na osnovu empirijskih radova njegovih kritičara, analizirana je povezanost postmaterijalističkih vrednosti i četiri sociodemografske varijable: uzrasta, stepena obrazovanja, nivoa porodičnih prihoda i veličine mesta prebivališta. Podaci prikupljeni u istraživanju javnog mnjenja 2007. godine koje obuhvata 1410 građana Srbije starijih od 15 godina pokazuju da su svi analizirani faktori važni, ali da je uzrast najbolji prediktor ovih vrednosti. U zaključku je diskutovana adekvatnost generacijske hipoteze kao mehanizma promene preovlađujućih vrednosti jednog društva i eksplanatorna moć analiziranog sociodemografskog modela.

Blackwell: Oxford, pp. 60-80 Introduction Compared to other subdivisions within philosophy (such as philosophy of mind and indeed philosophy of science), philosophy of the social sciences occupies a distinctive, and perhaps idiosyncratic position. Unlike most other strands, it does not enjoy a long heritage. Although a number of questions posed by philosophers of the social sciences clearly predate the modern era, the discipline as such cannot be traced back further than the nineteenth century, with its origins closely tied to the emergence and establishment of the social sciences themselves. Before then, philosophers might have reflected on the nature of social inquiry, but there was not a clearly distinguishable area of philosophy of the social sciences as such, nor was the need felt by philosophers or anyone else to carve one out. The appearance and formation of the social sciences within academic institutions during the nineteenth century led to widespread concerns (not just amongst philosophers and practising social researchers but also amongst other academicians) about the methodology and scientific legitimacy of these newly founded disciplines, which seemed to find themselves at the crossroads “between science and literature” (Lepenies 1988). The new disciplines, regarded with a mixture of enthusiasm, hope and suspicion, were in serious need of both academic recognition and methodological guidance.

By introducing the phenomenon of ‘Second Modernity,’ Ulrich Beck has rendered our continuous engagement with the basic premises of modernity into an explicit enterprise and provided the vision, necessary to understand how reflexive modernization is working.1 However, attempts to delineate a distinctive era run the risk of simply being juxtaposed to ‘First Modernity.’ Like other theorists before him, Beck’s analysis of a new type of (second) modernity is at peril to de-historicize the transition from one epoch to a new one by addressing it in terms of a rupture. Initially this helps to see the contours of a new era, but eventually abstracting from the diachronic renders epochal transitions into rigid schemes. As a result, sociologists have often tended to naturalize and subsequently strip certain terms (such as, for example, the nation-state or legal-rational legitimacy) from their historical origins and our sense of their malleability. We experience them as ‚natural’ to the degree that we ignore their historical roots, as well as the cultural conditions and political contingencies of their current incarnation. Modernity is perceived in a way that indicates that people have forgotten what the modernizing process consists of. It is instructive to take a brief look at how the founding fathers of sociology conceptualized the emergence of modernity.

    Final Program 100th Annual Meeting August 13-16, 2005 Philadelphia Marriott, Philadelphia Loews, and Philadelphia Downtown Courtyard by Marriott Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Comparative Perspectives, Competing Explanations Accounting for the Rising and Declining Significance of Sociology This is the centennial for the Association, so the meeting theme should be sufficiently expansive to address a wide historical sweep, and yet have sufficient focus to provide a framework in which to address key aspects of the social history of the discipline—its contemporary situation and its potential future development. Each of the three elements from the title “Comparative Perspectives, Competing Explanations” is designed to produce a fruitful meeting frame: First, the notion of “comparative perspectives” is itself “accordion-like” and can fit a number of purposes and goals. There is the international aspect, so that we can incorporate a comparison of American sociology with international developments. There is the internal evolution of perspectives inside of the United States, which would include the development and emergence of challenging and oppositional perspectives in the discipline, from the Society for the Study of Social Problems, to Sociologists for Women in Society, to the Association of Black Sociologists, to name but a few organizational manifestations of the challenges of the last half century.     Science Conducted in Public under Clandestine Attack Call for solidarity: The Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory in Belgrade is in danger The renowned Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory Belgrade (IFDT) has a long history of liberal thinking. Founded by dissident intellectuals expelled from the university for their involvement in the Yugoslav 1968 movement, it was, in the 1990s, at the forefront of the opposition to the policies of Slobodan Milošević. Zoran Đinđić, philosopher and the first Serbian head of government in the post-Miloševic era, who was assassinated while in power in 2003, had worked at this Institute for several years. The IFDT is now, it seems, to be put on a political leash. The Serbian government has appointed a new Governing Board that includes several highly controversial political figures. For example, Zoran Avramović, the nominated President of the Board, was promoted to official leading positions in the Ministry of Education by the right-wing Radical Party of Vojislav Šešelj (who was sentenced by the Hague Tribunal). Avramović has already intimated what he thinks of the institute when he urged for suspension of financing for the IFDT Regional Centre in Novi Sad. The current Acting Director uses repressive measures that indicate what the future of the institute will look like (threats to suspend salaries, attempts to curb the freedom of the Institute's Scientific Council, junior researchers put under pressure, international projects suspended, etc.). Democracy, and specifically the scientific and education landscape in Serbia, is increasingly under threat. There are few remaining free media. The current attempt to muzzle and perhaps even eliminate an autonomous academic institution like IFDT further weakens Serbian democracy.
