Handbells in Worship An Introduction The playing of bells in the church has a long and glorious tradition, whether the bells are of the small handheld type or the huge cast bells in the bell tower of a great cathedral. Bells have often been sounded for a variety of liturgical purposes in the local worship setting. In medieval times bells were steeped in superstition. This was probably because of their long association with religion. They were baptized, and once baptized had the power to ward off evil spells and spirits. Bells were hung in doorways to protect visitors and the visited from the evil spirits, which always wait around the door awaiting the chance to slip inside. A visitor would ring the bell to drive the spirits away then pass inside - which is the likely origin of the present day doorbell! This custom also led to the “Passing Bell” which was rung to drive away spirits who stood at the foot of a bed and about the house ready to seize a person's soul as they died. The local ringers who were paid to ring the passing bell were paid more for a big bell than a small one, not because the big one was harder to ring, but because it kept the spirits further away and gave the departing soul a better start. The sound of consecrated bells was also believed to dispel thunder and lightning and to calm storms at sea for all of which demons were believed to be responsible. The Latin word CYMBALA which comes from the Greek KUMBALON, meaning cup, was used in early times to mean both CYMBALS and also BELLS – hence the later confusion when it came to translating the psalms into English. “Praise Him upon the loud cymbals; praise Him upon the well tuned cymbals [bells].”–Psalm 150:5 Effective and creative use of handbells can provide a significant contribution to the worship life of a congregation. In liturgical worship services, whether it is contemporary or traditional in style, the use of handbells and chimes can add a new dimension to many parts of the liturgy. Not only will your ringers feel more a part of the worship service, but your congregation will appreciate the extra effort to make their worship more meaningful. Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Handbells 101 Introduction to the Art of Handbell Ringing Begins Thursday, October 3rd

This year the Ministry of Music is pleased to offer a ten week IǞǤǢǟǔǥǓǤǙǟǞ Ǥǟ ǤǘǕ AǢǤ ǟǖ HǑǞǔǒǕǜǜ RǙǞǗǙǞǗ. Participants will have fun by learning to play on the parish’s three-octave set of handbells, culminating with ringing the bells at the Christmas Day Mass on Wednesday, December 25th at 10:30 a.m. The course will run for ten sessions every Thursday evening (except Halloween and Thanksgiving) from 6:30 p.m. until 7:20 p.m. in the Fr. Solanus Room at the parish activities building beginning October 3rd. While the ability to read music notation is very helpful, it is not necessary to join. We will teach you everything you need to know! All that is required is a willingness to learn, a firm commitment to attend the ten-week course, and availability to play the bells on Christmas Day. This course is open to all parishioners, high school age through senior adult. This would be a great way for a family to get into the spirit of the Christmas season! If you have further questions, please contact Mr. Rogers after Mass or send him an e-mail at [email protected]. Page 6 The La Salette News, Berkley Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain… In this Sunday’s Gospel, we learn the context for the forthcoming parables about the lost and found. A great mixed crowd surrounds Jesus. The religious elite are present, along with all manner of local lowlifes. The Pharisees seem a bit upset that this wasn’t the lecture series they were hoping for. Why would Jesus welcome sinners? Jesus responds as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep … rejoice because I have found the coin that I lost … let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine … was lost, and has been found!” Each of the parables features a dramatic example. Of 99 sheep, one has gone astray. Of 10 coins, one has gone missing. The welcomed son has previously been a covetous scoundrel. Jesus’ point to the Pharisees is clear. If the Gospel really is “good news,” if our faith really has the power to save, why wouldn’t we want everyone drawing near? Why wouldn’t we do everything in our power to eke out that possibility for every single person, no matter where they have wandered? After all, if this message is not of value to everyone, why is it of value to anyone? Our Christian faith is not a matter of rule adherence for the perfectionist elite. In our own ways, each of us is the lost sheep, the prodigal son. There is no one who “has no need of repentance.” The Church is a mixed crowd. And we are mixed people. And the Gospel has good news for each of us today! There is no one Jesus doesn’t go after, no one he does not catch sight of “while … still a long way off,” no one to whom he does not run to embrace and welcome home. ©LPi The La Salette News, Berkley Page 7

The SUNDAY EXPERIENCE Begins Today In the United States, the third Sunday of September is celebrated as Catechetical Sunday in order to “acknowledge, appreciate and commission those who are catechists.” In keeping with the Church’s teaching, at La Salette we include parents among those to be commissioned, given the sacred and privileged roles they play in handing on our Catholic faith. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to rededicate ourselves to handing on our Catholic faith. It marks the beginning of our faith formation program, the SUNDAY EXPERIENCE, for the 2019/2020 program year! The SUNDAY EXPERIENCE at Our Lady of La Salette always begins with Sunday Mass, the primary prayer for all Catholics. After Mass, SUNDAY EXPERIENCE registered families will spend an additional hour receiving important information about our archdiocesan safe-environment priorities for children. If you are parents with children not yet registered, please do so today. It makes things easier for all of us! As your coordinator of faith formation I am always available to answer your questions and to assist in any way. More information about THE SUNDAY EXPERIENCE can be found on our parish website: www.lasalette- church.org. May the Lord empower all of us to truly be passionate witnesses for Jesus Christ! Peace and all good! Bro. Al, OFM
