I am not by any means a scholar of these languages, but I have been able to gain a fuller appreciation of the rich and subtle texture of Sacred Scripture that is all too often lost in translations, and particularly in modern translations. For Catholics there is an official normative text of the Bible which is the Latin Vulgate. The Vulgate was originally 22nd Sunday translated by St. Jerome working in Bethlehem in the fourth in Ordinary Time century. Latin, at the time, was the common language throughout the Roman Empire and St. Jerome’s goal was to September 1, 2019 make Sacred Scripture accessible to as many people as possible. Greek was the language of intellectuals and Hebrew * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * even more arcane. “Ignoratio Scripturarum ignoratio Christi est,” says St. Jerome, “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance The Priest’s Mass Intentions of Christ.” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Unfortunately, today Latin is almost as incomprehensible to the average Catholic as Hebrew. And the Sunday, September 1 many translations available to us today in English vary from 7 a.m. Pat Glass + okay to very bad. Generally the more modern or “current” the 8:30 a.m. People of the Parish translation, the worse it is. When asked to recommend a 10:30 a.m. Thanksgiving (Nguyen Family) translation, I generally tell people my preferred English 12:30 p.m. Pat Glass + translation is the Navarre Bible, put out by Scepter Publishers. Monday, September 2 For sheer beauty of language I recommend the original “King 10 a.m. Rocco Hung Pham + James” version. Albeit a Protestant translation, the majesty and Tuesday, September 3 timbre of its language is closest approaches that of the original 8:30 a.m. Catherine Callaghan + text. 12 noon Jerome Duncan + For myself when preparing my homilies, I rely on my Wednesday, September 4 Greek/Latin New Testament, and for the Old Testament I will 8:30 a.m. Brendan Johnston + also look at the Hebrew as well as the Latin, and in some cases 12 noon Joseph Nguyen + the Greek of the Septuagint (a 3rd and 2nd century BC Thursday, September 5 translation of the Hebrew Scriptures). Additionally, I look at 8:30 a.m. Maria Kim Lien + multiple translations in English. 12 noon Pat Dorothy Hannahs + It was with great joy that I came upon a new Friday, September 6 translation of the Hebrew Bible by Professor Robert Alter, a 8:30 a.m. Margaret “Maggie” Smith well known, highly respected professor of Hebrew and 12 noon Atillo Family (healing) Comparative Literature at Berkeley. His translation is straight Saturday, September 7 forward while respecting the subtlety and cadences of the 8:30 a.m. All abandoned souls + original text. His notes and commentary both explain his choice 5 p.m. vigil Blanche Anceravage + of vocabulary and shed insight into the complexity of the Sunday, September 8 original texts. I believe that Alter’s translation is about as close 7 a.m. Maria Nguyen Thi An + as one can get in English to the “original” Hebrew. (I put 8:30 a.m. People of the Parish original in quotation marks because the Hebrew itself evolved 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Patricia Glass + over time, for example the vowel marks coming only around 12:30 p.m. Jerome Duncan + the 800’s AD — before that it was all consonants and not broken up into chapter and verse). Professor Alter’s translation * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * is available in three volumes, priced at just over $100– on A Word from Fr. Drummond Amazon. I heartily recommend this work to anyone who wishes * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * to enter more fully into the Old Testament. It would easily be the best $100– you ever spent. One of the great challenges I face as a priest are the insipid and sometimes woefully inaccurate translations of * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Sacred Scripture given to us in the Lectionary. The poor quality In Our Parish of the Lectionary’s translation inhibits our appreciation and * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * understanding of Sacred Scripture in the same way a window covered in mud blocks the rays of the noonday sun.
