Responsible for feasibility analysis and development of software test cases in C and Assembly, discovering advantageous applications, recommendations on future core technical development, technical marketing, technical seminar development and presentation, and significant customer interaction and customer support. GN ReSound and Technical Service Providers 6/99 to 10/99 Consultant Design, optimization and implementation of speech processing algorithms, using Matlab, SIMULINK and Dspace™, for high fidelity, digital earpieces and hearing aids. Responsible for advanced filtering algorithm design for signal conditioning to yield high quality sound with minimal noise, modulation, and feedback. Specific algorithms developed in the areas of noise reduction, automatic gain control, active feedback cancellation, pitch-shifting, and automatic signal compression. Reflectivity Inc. 1/99 to 5/99 Independent Consultant Design and optimization of digital micro-mirror devices for a small startup company. Established several new analytical and finite element modeling methods delivering superior correlation and saving the customer significant development time and cost, while increasing their knowledge of the device. Characterized design space, selected feasible designs for performance and manufacturing. Hughes Space and Communication and Ensemble Systems 6/98 to 1/99 Independent Consultant Customized real time satellite control system software for the 601HP spacecraft. Responsible for architecting, designing, developing, implementing, and testing a portion of the ground station control system procedures for this spacecraft. Resolved multiple spacecraft engineering and operations issues related to the paradigm of the graphical software upon which the system is based. Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) 9/95 to 1/98 Member of the Research Staff Research on Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and active structural control and strengthening problems – Smart Matter. Experimental and theoretical work including design and testing of several MEMS-based control systems, using robust H-infinity, optimal, decentralized, and non-linear control. Led team from concept through implementation. General Motors Corp, CPC Engineering 7/86 to 1/92 Project and Senior Project Engineer Analyzed and optimized over 8 new vehicle systems using FEA and other techniques. Developed models and procedures for test lab validation, full vehicle and structural element design input, and specifications for vehicle vibration performance. Created new optimization and design techniques to improve analysis capabilities and productivity. The models were applied to develop more than 5 vehicle platforms. Includes new highly accurate model-based insulin sensitivity tests. Developed models, methods and algorithms to quantify agitation and improve sedation in ICU. Cardiovascular models and parameter ID methods for real-time diagnosis and decision support. Lung mechanics modeling for optimal mechanical ventilation strategies in ARDS patients. Digital Imaging-based Elasto-Tomography (DIET) elastographic breast cancer screening technology. Smart and Next-Generation Structures, Health Monitoring & Control: Wide variety of adaptive filtering based structural health monitoring methods. Semi-active, optimal and passive control of large-scale structures, including extensive non-linear finite element simulation and design, and passive designs. Several full-scale experimental works. Optimal MEMS-based buckling control featured on ABC News, The New York Times. Helped found 2 startups in Christchurch (C&M Technologies and 2.2g) in structural technology. MEMS Devices & Modeling: FEA-base analysis, design, and optimization of MEMS micro-mirror devices. Non-linear FEA tools for the dynamic analysis of non-linear, high speed MEMS devices, including snap-in, zipping and squeeze film damping effects, for Eastman Kodak. Design of a high speed MEMS air jet valves using smart materials and PCB batch fabrication. Digital Signal Processing: Designed and implemented real time, digital filtering algorithms for feedback cancellation, noise reduction, automatic gain control, and pitch shifting for digital hearing aids with GN ReSound. MPEG-4 encoder and decoder applications analysis to remove over 50% of the required Mcycles of computation using an Infineon Carmel DSP core for Infineon AG.
