  • Entribment Kuttampuzha
EnTribment Kuttampuzha . Adopting a Tribal Community While community care is a mandate as reflected in the motto of the institution, “For God and Country”, adopting a tribal community is an ennobled vision emanated from the motto. Being a minority institution that upholds Christian virtues of love and care for the fellow beings, channelizing the resources for the enhancement of underprivileged community is the ethos of the college. The students imbibe philanthropic values as the virtuous takeaways from the institution. The tribal communities require extra care, support and attention owing to their primitive traits, geographical isolation, distinct culture, inhibition or shy of contact with community at large, economic backwardness, pre-agriculture level of technology, stagnant or declining population, extremely low literacy and subsistence level of economy. While some tribal communities have adopted a mainstream way of life, at the other end of the spectrum, there are certain groups that are underprivileged and particularly vulnerable, which are at different stages of social, economic and educational development. The tribal community adopted by the institution is Kuttampuzha, and different outreach, extension and enhancement activities have been organised as part of Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan Scheme of MHRD, spearheaded by the NGO organisation of the institution, BeFORE. Kuttampuzha was selected for adoption with a special concern for the tribal inmates who lie at a close proximity of the college. The project enTribment Kuttampuzha focuses on the upliftment of the children, youth and adult to the mainstream empowering the inmates of tribal hamlets of Kuttampuzha Panchayath through entrepreneurships, educational support, skill development programmes, cultural club activities etc.

Harsham – “Happiness Redefined” Geriatric Care Programme Harsham - “Happiness Redefined” An Elderly Care program from Kudumbasree Funding Partner: Kerala Academy for Skill Execellence (KASE) Implemented by: Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust (HLFPPT) (A unit of HLL Lifecare Ltd) Harsham – “Happiness Redefined” 2 Harsham – “Happiness Redefined” 3 Since its inception, Kudumbashree Mission have been in the forefront, striving to wipe off poverty from Kerala and make the lives of the people get better in all senses. For the last 20 years, Kudumbashree had been actively functioning in the social scenario of Kerala framing and implementing innovative projects. By making way for the micro entrepreneurs to launch their own enterprises, we envisaged helping them find livelihood of their own and change the lives of many in a positive way. Kudumbashree Mission always aim to find opportunities for livelihood for its members so as to assist them earn better income, identifying the right opportunities. Two years back, we had initiated Harsham programme realizing the opportunities existing in the service sector of Kerala. As we all know, the availability of reliable and trained persons in elderly care is relatively less in Kerala. Those whose are ready to provide this service always would have greater job opportunities. We identified the opportunity in this and launched the Harsham Project for geriatric care. Harsham programme aims at providing intensive training of 15 days to women and equip them to provide service in geriatric care sector. The training for the caregivers was provided with the assistance of doctors, nurses and hospital management in selected hospitals in the state.

  • Biodiversity Significance, Landuse Pattern and Conservation of Malayattur Forests in the Western Ghats of Kerala, India *R
Indian Journal of Fundamental and Applied Life Sciences ISSN: 2231-6345 (Online) An Online International Journal Available at http://www.cibtech.org/jls.htm 2011 Vol. 1 (4) October-December, pp.247-254/Sakthivel and Sreekumar Research Article BIODIVERSITY SIGNIFICANCE, LANDUSE PATTERN AND CONSERVATION OF MALAYATTUR FORESTS IN THE WESTERN GHATS OF KERALA, INDIA *R. Sugantha Sakthivel1 and V.B. Sreekumar2 Forest Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation Division, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, Thrissur, Kerala, India – 680 653 *Author for Correspondence ABSTRACT The paper deals with the conservation planning of Malayattur Forest Division in the Southern Western Ghats of Kerala, India. Field visits and participatory interactions were conducted to collect the biodiversity significance. Using Geographical Information System (GIS) tools, the forest types and the landuse pattern of the Division were analyzed and biodiversity rich and vulnerable areas were identified for the conservation management. The forest is rich in endemic and endangered flora and fauna. Two zones viz., conservation and restoration zones were delineated based on the biodiversity richness, landuse pattern and conservation priorities. The present study will help to conserve the existing high value biodiversity areas, sustainable utilization of the available resources and restoration of the degraded patches. Key Words: Western Ghats, High Value Biodiversity Area, GIS, Conservation Planning INTRODUCTION The global biodiversity is at a crisis and diminishing at unprecedented rates (Myers, 1980). A biodiversity hotspot in the third world tropics experiences an enormous anthropogenic pressure (Kinnaird et al., 2003), which has resulted in accelerated forest loss. Given the alarming situations of extreme habitat alterations due to anthropogenic activities, it is important to have accurate assessments of distribution and conservation status of a threatened species and habitats, in particular, to prevent future loss of global biodiversity.
