Lundgaard Joined by Former World Rally Champion Solberg for Virtual Dutch Grand Prix Lundgaard joined by former World Rally Champion Solberg for Virtual Dutch Grand Prix Renault DP World F1 Team will field an all Scandinavian driver line -up for the Virtual Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday 3 May with Renault Sport Academy Driver Christian Lundgaard partnered by 2003 World Rally Champion and Castrol ambassador Petter Solberg. Christian, from Hedensted, Denmark, is looking to build on his impressive debut in the Formula 1 Virtual Grand Prix Series following a podium in the Vietnam race in April. The Formula 2 racer claimed a dominant pole position in the Grand Prix, which was held at Melbourne’s Albert Park, before an unfortunate grid penalty meant he had to work his way back up the order, eventually finishing in second place. And, Christian has motorsport experience on the opposite side of the garage in rally legend Solberg, who claimed the 2003 World Rally Championship as well as the 2014 and 2015 FIA World Rallycross Championships. Petter is a guest driver for the team for this race courtesy of his ambassadorial role for team sponsor, Castrol. He also has a personal link to the team as Renault DP World F1 Team’s Head of Performance Systems at Enstone, Pierre Genon, was Chief Rally Engineer to the Norwegian during his 2003 championship winning year. This will prove a fresh challenge for Petter who is attempting Formula 1 Esports for the first time. The 45-year-old will use his simulator set-up at his home in Sweden for the race, which is normally used to keep his rallying skills fresh alongside his son, Oliver. With the help of Renault Sport Team Vitality’s group of elite Esports drivers and coaches, Petter is being brought up to speed for the race, which will be held at Interlagos, Brazil on the F1 2019 Codemasters game, following the official Formula 1 fan vote. This is not the first time a Lundgaard has raced with a Solberg. In fact, Christian’s father, Henrik, the 2000 European Rally Champion, used to race against Petter in various rally championships, including eight world rally events between 1999 and 2001. The team is looking to maintain its successful start to the Virtua l Grand Prix Series after Test Driver Guanyu Zhou backed-up his victory at the inaugural race in Bahrain with a third place in China in mid-April. Before the Virtual Dutch Grand Prix starts at 18:00 BST on Sunday, there will once again be an exhibition race with the teams’ professional Esports drivers. Rallying has always been everything for me, but I did have the chance to drive a Formula 1 car earlier in my career! We are all changing the way we do things while the world is like it is and I’m really looking forward to driving with Christian [Lundgaard]. His father Henrik and I competed against each other when we were younger, so I’m happy my team-mate is coming from a good rallying family. Like everything I will give this 110% and do my best. Action kicked off with a super-special in the streets of Barcelona on Thursday evening before crews returned to the service park in Salou, some 80km south of Catalonia’s capital. Spain’s round is the only mixed-surface fixture of the FIA World Rally Championship, with Friday’s leg an all-gravel affair followed by two days on asphalt on Saturday and Sunday. This specificity means teams need to change the configuration of their respective cars on Friday evening, since the suspension parts, transmission systems and settings they use are different for sealed-surfaces. To cover the weekend’s unique mix of surface and weather conditions, Michelin’s partners were able to choose between two distinct tyre ranges, namely the H5 (hard compound) and S6 (soft) versions of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport for the asphalt stages, plus the MICHELIN LTX Force H4 (hard) and MICHELIN LTX Force M6 (medium) for the day on dirt. Meanwhile, the French firm’s WRC2 competitors had a choice between the RH3 (hard) and RS (soft) versions of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport asphalt tyre, and between the MICHELIN Latitude Cross H90 (hard) and S80 (soft) for gravel. It’s a huge shame that the recent warm weather has conspired to take the edge off what has to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the season: World Rally Cars dancing on ice. The World Rally Championship is full of stop-you-in-your-tracks moments and the sight of a World Rally Car on the lock-stops – front corner nibbling a snowbank at the apex while the opposite corner leans on a wall and fires powder 15 feet in the air – is right up there. Right up there. But it’s not to be this time. The warm weather has forced a complete rethink of the route and even blizzard conditions for the rest of the week wouldn’t be enough to deliver the perfect winter rally. Recipe for perfect winter roads: heavy (like heavy, heavy) snow, semi-melt, deep-freeze, light snow shower. The semi-melt puts moisture into the road and snow base which, when frozen hard, provides a rock-solid ice base for the studded tyres to dig into. The freeze will also pack the snowbanks really hard, allowing the guys to go a gear higher through some corners. We’re missing a couple of elements of that recipe this week! This week will be about staying out of trouble and keeping as many studs in place as possible. That in itself provides an intriguing event, however. Let’s see who can drive smart as well as super-quick in these compromised and challenging conditions.

    STARS OF THE STAGE When the World Rally Championship first began in 1973, only the car manufacturers fought for a crown; it wasn’t until 1979 that the drivers were recognised with their own world title. They soon made up for lost time, however, and over the past four decades the WRC has been a constant source of drama, heroism and displays of unbelievable skill. Described by those who knew him as a true gentleman (and sometimes as a teddy bear), the late Björn Waldegård won the inaugural World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1979 (prior to that, the competition had Waldegård been held for two years as an FIA ‘Cup for Drivers’, won by Sandro Munari in 1977 and Markku Alén in 1978). All through that season, Waldegård battled Hannu Mikkola, his team-mate not just at Ford in the pace-setting Escort RS but also at Mercedes-Benz. The German company had 1979 hired the duo to pilot the powerful if unwieldy 5.0-litre V8 automatic 450SLC Coupé on the Safari and Ivory Coast events.
