FIA Smart Driving Challenge Season 2021 Is Taking Off FIA Smart Driving Challenge season 2021 is taking off The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) is launching the Season 2021 of the FIA Smart Driving Challenge, a challenge inviting motorists across the world to adopt smarter, safer, and eco-friendlier behaviour at the wheel. The FIA Smart Driving Challenge (FIA SDC), supported by several FIA Member Clubs, is free and open to all motorists who can take part using all types of cars (electric, hybrid or fuel). To join, participants should download the FIA Smart Driving Challenge app on their smartphone and connect it to their car via Bluetooth. They will then be invited to choose one of the 22 teams led by prestigious motor sport champions Abdulla Al-Khelaifi, Nasser Al-Kuwari, Kevin Hansen, Adel Hussein Abdulla, Karol Basz, Giniel de Villiers, Suvi Jyrkiäinen, Jutta Kleinschmidt, Johan Kristoffersson, Freddy Loix, Andreas Mikkelsen, Sébastien Ogier, Hayden Paddon, Gosia Rdest, Henning Solberg, Oliver Solberg, Petter Solberg, Marlon Stockinger, Tina Thörner, Pontus Tidemand, Martin Tomczyk, and Thiago Vivacqua. These team leaders will encourage FIA SDC participants to handle their car in a safe, environmentally friendly way and to follow smart tips: • Accelerate and brake efficiently in accordance with traffic and other conditions; • Keep a safe distance from the car in front; • Stay focused on your driving and pay attention to your surroundings; • Adapt driving style and speed to conditions, such as traffic and bad weather. The season 2021 will be organised around three qualification heats, each lasting six weeks long, from 19 April to 8 November 2021. During the heats, motorists will see their driving patterns evaluated in real- time thanks to the Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology Enerfy, developed by the Swedish tech company Greater Than also powering the FIA SDC app. This technology will convert the observed driving behaviour into a score allowing the FIA to establish a competition ranking and select the finalists of the FIA Smart Driving Challenge. Due to the exceptional circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, last season's Final of the FIA Smart Driving Challenge took place online via the FIA SDC app. The same format may be adopted for the Final of the Season 2021 scheduled for 13 December depending on how the situation evolves. More information will be communicated in due course. Join the FIA Smart Driving Challenge Season 2021 More information on participation and registration can be found on the FIA Smart Driving Challenge website at https://fiasmartdrivingchallenge.com Registration for the challenge is free of charge and the FIA SDC app is available for download on both iOS and Android. Donau, April 24, 2018 – It is one of the toughest race tracks in the FIA World Rallycross Championship (World RX): this weekend (28/29 April) the circuit in the mountains of Montalegre (Portugal) awaits the EKS Audi Sport team and the Audi S1 EKS RX quattro. The circuit, located 1,000 meters above sea level and close to the Spanish border, has a unique character – with fast corners on tarmac, a long straight and a tight and twisty gravel section featuring high curbs. “To find the best set-up compromise for this is a real challenge every time,” says Audi factory driver Mattias Ekström. In 2016 he managed this successfully even though he missed the final due to being involved in somebody else’s start line accident. “Last year, we were not the fastest in Montalegre but as team still took the win in the end. I love this track and the Portuguese spectators, who are mega enthusiastic about motorsport and rallycross.” The classic rallycross circuit attracts tens of thousands of fans every year to the remote mountain region. They turn the event into a real festival. Ekström’s new team mate Andreas Bakkerud is also a big fan of Montalegre. “It is one of my absolute favorite tracks.

  • Michelin's Range and People Play Key Role in Catalonia Tyre Strategies
MEDIA INFORMATION 2018 FIA World Rally Championship Round 12: RallyRACC Catalunya – Rally de España Michelin’s range and people play key role in Catalonia tyre strategies This year’s RallyRACC Catalunya turned out to be colder and wetter than the recent Wales Rally GB, which is certainly saying something! Action kicked off with a super-special in the streets of Barcelona on Thursday evening before crews returned to the service park in Salou, some 80km south of Catalonia’s capital. Spain’s round is the only mixed-surface fixture of the FIA World Rally Championship, with Friday’s leg an all-gravel affair followed by two days on asphalt on Saturday and Sunday. This specificity means teams need to change the configuration of their respective cars on Friday evening, since the suspension parts, transmission systems and settings they use are different for sealed-surfaces. To cover the weekend’s unique mix of surface and weather conditions, Michelin’s partners were able to choose between two distinct tyre ranges, namely the H5 (hard compound) and S6 (soft) versions of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport for the asphalt stages, plus the MICHELIN LTX Force H4 (hard) and MICHELIN LTX Force M6 (medium) for the day on dirt. Meanwhile, the French firm’s WRC2 competitors had a choice between the RH3 (hard) and RS (soft) versions of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport asphalt tyre, and between the MICHELIN Latitude Cross H90 (hard) and S80 (soft) for gravel. When heavy rain swept over the region on Saturday, crews also had the option to fit the MICHELIN Pilot Sport FW3, the specific tread pattern, high ‘sea-to-land’ tread block ratio and oblique lateral water-clearance grooves of which are designed to combine performance on wet roads with resistance to aquaplaning.

  • Rally Sweden Hello. So, Snow. Except This Time the Story's About The
The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Sweden Hello. So, snow. Except this time the story’s about the snow’s Swedish no- snow. It’s a huge shame that the recent warm weather has conspired to take the edge off what has to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the season: World Rally Cars dancing on ice. The World Rally Championship is full of stop-you-in-your-tracks moments and the sight of a World Rally Car on the lock-stops – front corner nibbling a snowbank at the apex while the opposite corner leans on a wall and fires powder 15 feet in the air – is right up there. Right up there. But it’s not to be this time. The warm weather has forced a complete rethink of the route and even blizzard conditions for the rest of the week wouldn’t be enough to deliver the perfect winter rally. Recipe for perfect winter roads: heavy (like heavy, heavy) snow, semi-melt, deep-freeze, light snow shower. The semi-melt puts moisture into the road and snow base which, when frozen hard, provides a rock-solid ice base for the studded tyres to dig into. The freeze will also pack the snowbanks really hard, allowing the guys to go a gear higher through some corners. We’re missing a couple of elements of that recipe this week! This week will be about staying out of trouble and keeping as many studs in place as possible. That in itself provides an intriguing event, however. Let’s see who can drive smart as well as super-quick in these compromised and challenging conditions.

  • Stars of the Stage
STARS OF THE STAGE When the World Rally Championship first began in 1973, only the car manufacturers fought for a crown; it wasn’t until 1979 that the drivers were recognised with their own world title. They soon made up for lost time, however, and over the past four decades the WRC has been a constant source of drama, heroism and displays of unbelievable skill. So as the Festival celebrates 40 years of the World Rally Drivers’ Championship this weekend, we remember some of those who have fought for and won the sport’s greatest prize STORY BY ANGUS FRAZER Left: Petter Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills celebrate victory in the 2002 Rally GB. Right: Sébastien Ogier powers his Citroën to third in the 2019 Argentine Rally Rallying’s first World Champion proved that while sublime skill and dogged determination are both prerequisites for victory, ruthlessness Björn is not. Described by those who knew him as a true gentleman (and sometimes as a teddy bear), the late Björn Waldegård won the inaugural World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1979 (prior to that, the competition had Waldegård been held for two years as an FIA ‘Cup for Drivers’, won by Sandro Munari in 1977 and Markku Alén in 1978). All through that season, Waldegård battled Hannu Mikkola, his team-mate not just at Ford in the pace-setting Escort RS but also at Mercedes-Benz. The German company had 1979 hired the duo to pilot the powerful if unwieldy 5.0-litre V8 automatic 450SLC Coupé on the Safari and Ivory Coast events.
