    The Shadows of Mordor INTRODUCTION Welcome to The Shadows of Mordor, in which Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee continue their quest to destroy the power of the evil Dark Lord, Sauron. In playing this adventure game, you will be assuming the role of characters in JRR. Tolkien’s fantasy world. You must detail out the actions which your characters are to perform, and the computer will moderate the results accordingly. It should be noted that there are few if any problems in this game which have a single solution. The game has been designed to allow a variety of responses to the adventure problems, some of which are more efficient than others. The Shadows of Mordor is a brilliant piece of fantasy software thanks to the re- working of many of the games systems by a highly trained team of idiots. The game system will be familiar to players of Lord of the Rings Game One, with the exception of the improvements in the flexibility of play. For instance, it is now possible to talk to characters and give them a string of instructions which they will follow in sequence, rather than painstakingly telling them what to do at each and every turn. In order to provide players with the host of problems expected from a high quality computer adventure, it has been necessary to take minor liberties with Lord of the Rings storyline (it wouldn’t be much of a game if there was no challenge to interrupt the storyline of Tolkien’s master work), and thus we hope that you will see them in the light in which they were intended, and not as blasphemous attempts to butcher one of the great works of fantasy literature.

Binkley, M.S. Special Education Specialist, Ryan Middle School, Fairbanks, Alaska I want to talk to you today about my experiences in teaching Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings to middle school students where I teach in Fairbanks, Alaska. I would like to give you an idea about this place I have called home for the past 30 years. Fairbanks is a combination of wild Alaska and the inner city of Detroit. No, I am not joking. Central Fairbanks is a mish-mash of transient families who come north seeking either a better future or their last chance; families moving in and out of Alaska’s native villages; homeless shelters of all sorts; and some of the wealthiest and most privileged families in the city. Ryan Middle School has an enrollment of around four hundred students in grades seven and eight. The population is high in special needs students because there is a centralized program for the district housed in the building. We also have one of the highest enrollments of homeless students in the state. We have students who have just transitioned from incarceration in prisons and mental institutions. We have some of the brightest math students in the state. They regularly kick butt in national competitions. We have students who are gifted engineers, winning robotic competitions time and time again against others in the district, and we have the most happily average kids you will ever meet.

Welcome from Corey Olsen Signum University and the Mythgard Institute have been around for over five years now, and each time we’ve hosted a Mythmoot conference, it has been special. As an institution, Signum strives to make serious scholarship on imaginative literature and all the fun that goes along with it available to everyone, and from its inception, Mythmoot has been the place where that mission gets embodied in a local gathering. This year, we have put together our biggest program ever. We’ve invited more guests, extended the conference an extra day, and discovered a wonderful new venue that enables us to plan the most exciting conference we’ve ever hosted.   • L'arte Di Ted Nasmith
    L’arte di Ted Nasmith di Davide Cattaneo Il lettore delle opere di Tolkien che volesse ricercare immagini ispirate all’universo letterario da lui creato, troverebbe tra gli artisti più noti e prolifici il nome di Ted Nasmith, che da quasi quarant’anni dedica ampio spazio della propria attività artistica professionale all’illustrazione tolkieniana. Nato in Ontario (Canada), nella metà degli anni ’50, scoprì all’età di 13 anni le prime opere di Tolkien e subito fu attratto dalla grandiosità e dell’epica delle sue storie; come illustratore si è inoltre specializzato nella realizzazione di rendering architettonici di edifici e complessi immobiliari, illustrazioni di automobili d’epoca e moderne; tra i suoi diversi interessi coltiva anche la passione per il canto e la musica. Esaminando tutte le opere di Nasmith si rileva, quale comune denominatore, la cura maniacale nel rappresentare i particolari, anche i dettagli più minimi, tale da rendere le sue illustrazioni iperrealistiche, quasi fossero trasposizioni fotografiche che immortalano scene, paesaggi e persone dell’universo tolkieniano. In tutte le opere si rileva inoltre l’assoluta fedeltà al testo e l’attenzione posta alle minuziose descrizioni dell’autore, caratteristica che ha reso Nasmith un illustratore tolkieniano molto apprezzato dalla maggior parte dei fans. Spesso sono i paesaggi il soggetto amato dall’artista: dalle quiete immagini della contea, avvolte dai colori verdi e gialli, molto luminosi, fino ai desolati territori di Mordor, con i colori grigi e marroni che bene rendono l’atmosfera cupa dei luoghi. Tra i paesaggi di Nasmith che più mi affascinano vi è quello che ritrae Granburrone, tratta dal capitolo 3 de Lo Hobbit, che riprende l’originale disegno eseguitola Tolkien per accompagnare le prime edizioni del libro, pubblicato da Allen & Unwin Publishers.
