Auctions to Raise Funds for the American Red Cross "Star Wars" Collectibles and Autographed "Titanic" Scriptment Book among Memorabilia Offered on the Virtual Auction Block SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- April 27, 1999 -- Joining efforts with Academy Award®-winning film directors to celebrities in the world of music and entertainment to government leaders to sports legends and Olympic gold medalists, Yahoo!® Auctions (http://auctions.yahoo.com) continues to offer a global community of support for Kosovo refugees. Major celebrities including General Colin L. Powell, James Cameron, U2, Blues Traveler, Deepak Chopra, Ben Grieve, Hanson, Dennis Hopper, Shaquille O'Neal, Tom Petty, Will Smith, Rod Stewart, Kristi Yamaguchi and a host of others have donated items to Yahoo! Auctions to aid in the American Red Cross’ efforts in the Balkans. Through dedicated and ongoing efforts, Yahoo!, participating donors and the Internet community are working to demonstrate the power of the Internet to unite people in support of humanitarian efforts. Building on activities announced last week, Yahoo! Auctions -- a free interactive commerce marketplace connecting buyers and sellers -- is currently featuring an array of collectibles, autographed memorabilia and unique items for people to bid on to raise funds to help meet the emergency needs of refugees fleeing from Kosovo. The Red Cross needs at least $1 million each week for the next few months to meet the emergency humanitarian needs of Kosovo refugees. Currently, there are an estimated hundreds of thousands of refugees from Kosovo who are streaming into Albania, Macedonia and Montenegro. Many items have been donated to aid in the efforts to ameliorate the circumstances facing the refugees of Kosovo. Academy Award-winning director James Cameron is donating items including an autographed scriptment book from “Titanic”, which received the Academy Award in 1998 for “Best Picture.” Cameron noted, “I am glad to be able to do a little something to aid the people who are suffering from this terrible crisis. Yahoo! offers a place for people anywhere in the world to come together as a community and help lessen the horrible circumstances facing the refugees in Kosovo.” In addition, Cameron has donated signed one-sheets from “Titanic.” “It is important that people recognize that we are a global community. We believe that the Internet is a tremendous vehicle for generating positive change in the world by enabling people to come together and affect the lives of those who most need our assistance,” said David Filo, co-founder and chief Yahoo. “Since we began the Kosovo charity auctions a week ago, there has been an immediate outpouring of support, and through Yahoo! Auctions we can help the refugees in a way that was never before possible.” In addition to the support from individual donors and celebrities, many companies have teamed with Yahoo!     This frame positions Phish by indicating where they and various other bands fall in the Rolling Stone-defined hierarchy of music and culture, while providing reference points for processing and comparing information. This frame, combined with the next and its subframes, contributes to the continual construction of a rock and roll/jamband hierarchy that clearly defines the Grateful Dead at the top of a first generation, Phish clearly at the top of a second generation, and a third generation that apparently has no single leader, but a narrow pack of contenders. Further evidence arises in the discussion of the four subframes revealed through RQ2. This frame has always been present in coverage of Phish, as it is a common tool of music criticism. In particular, the frame has evolved such that Phish was once just a peer to fellow H.O.R.D.E. tour bands, such as Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors. As Phish’s success grew and they became “America’s Biggest Jam Band,” Dave Matthews Band appears to have become the group best suited for comparison as a contemporary peer, if even a cultural match and not a musical one. Meanwhile, Phish also became a more frequent reference in coverage of other bands. Despite persistent references to the Grateful Dead, coverage of Phish evolved to the extent that the Vermont quartet became an occasional reference in coverage of seemingly Phish- like successors.
