Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis investigates the social and ideological process of the marimba musical tradition in rural Guatemalan society. A basic assumption of the thesis is that “making music” and “talking about music” are forms of communication whose meanings arise from the social and cultural context in which they occur. From this point of view the main aim of this investigation is the analysis of the roles played by music within society and the construction of its significance as part of the social and cultural process of adaptation, continuity and change of Achi society. For instance the thesis elucidates how the dynamic of continuity and change affects the transmission of a musical tradition. The influence of the radio and its popular music on the teaching methods, music genres and styles of marimba music is part of a changing Indian society nevertheless it remains an important symbols of locality and ethnic identity. -

Powazek Master of Arts, Graduate Program in Art History University of California, Riverside, June 2020 Dr. Kristoffer Neville, Chairperson When the Albertine Dukes of Saxony gained the Electoral privilege in the second half of the sixteenth century, they ascended to a higher echelon of European princes. Elector August (r. 1553-1586) marked this new status by commissioning a monumental tomb in Freiberg Cathedral in Saxony for his deceased brother, Moritz, who had first won the Electoral privilege for the Albertine line of rulers. The tomb’s magnificence and scale, completed in 1563, immediately set it into relation to the grandest funerary memorials of Europe, the tombs of popes and monarchs, and thus establishing the new Saxon Electors as worthy peers in rank and status to the most powerful rulers of the period. By the end of his reign, Elector August sought to enshrine the succeeding rulers of his line in an even grander project, a dynastic chapel built into Freiberg Cathedral directly in front of the tomb of Moritz. -

Composition and Worldview of some Bourgeois and Petit-Bourgeois Mamluk Adab-Encylopedias Thomas Herzog Thomas Herzog Bern University Composition and Worldview of some Bourgeois and Petit-Bourgeois Mamluk Adab-Encylopedias The economic and cultural rise of parts of the ʿāmmah 1 due to the particular economic and infrastructural conditions of the Mamluk era brought with it the emergence of new intermediate levels of literature that were situated between Mamluk Adab-Encylopedias the literature of the elite and that of the ignorant and unlettered populace; be- tween the Arabic koiné (al-ʿarabīyah al-fuṣḥá) and the local dialects (ʿāmmīyahs); and between written and oral composition, performance, and transmission. The following article proposes to analyze the composition of three Mamluk adab- encyclopedias and compendia and their treatment of poverty and wealth in light of the social milieus of their authors and audiences. The Rise of a New Class When the Mamluks took power between 1250 and 1260 in the former Ayyubid lands of Egypt and Syria, the Mongol invasions and the assassination of the Ab- basid caliph in Baghdad as well as the ongoing Crusader presence in Palestine all brought about a shift in the eastern Islamic world’s center to Mamluk Egypt, which became a highly effective bulwark of Arab-Islamic rule and culture. The © The Middle East Documentation Center. The University of Chicago. This article is the enhanced version of a contribution first presented as a “Working Paper” at the Annemarie Schimmel Kolleg for the History and Society during the Mamluk Era, Bonn, Ger- many. I would like to thank Nefeli Papoutsakis, Münster, for her most valuable remarks on the translation of some Arabic terms. -

Indeed his career might best be described as something of a phenomenon. The passion with which the public have taken his work into their hearts is rivalled by few others over the last 30 years. Vettriano was born Jack Hoggan in Fife in 1951 into a background of poverty. Famously completely self-taught, Vettriano was gifted a set of watercolours by a girlfriend for his 21st, thus beginning his passion for painting. His early work, signed Hoggan, was heavily influenced by Impressionism and the artists he observed at Kirkcaldy Museum and Gallery. Art became a burning passion, and in 1986 at the age of 36, he quit his job in educational research and moved to Edinburgh to pursue art full time. Though rejected from the Edinburgh College of Art, he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy’s open exhibition in 1987. Both sold on the first day and a number of galleries immediately made their approach. What followed was a stratospheric rise to success with major gallery representation and shows that would sell out within hours. Reproductions of his most famous painting ‘The Singing Butler’ (1992) became the “best selling image” in Britain.
