www.gov.uk/englandcoastpath England Coast Path Stretch: Cleveleys to Pier Head, Liverpool Report CPH 3: Penwortham New Bridge, Preston to Tarleton Lock Part 3.1: Introduction Start Point: Penwortham New Bridge, Preston (Grid reference SD 5283 2888) End Point: Tarleton Lock (Grid reference SD 4560 2154) Relevant Maps: CPH 3a to CPH 3i 3.1.1 This is one of a series of linked but legally separate reports published by Natural England under section 51 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, which make proposals to the Secretary of State for improved public access along and to this stretch of coast between Cleveleys and Pier Head, Liverpool. 3.1.2 This report covers length CPH 3 of the stretch, which is the coast between Penwortham New Bridge, Preston and Tarleton Lock. It makes free-standing statutory proposals for this part of the stretch, and seeks approval for them by the Secretary of State in their own right under section 52 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. 3.1.3 The report explains how we propose to implement the England Coast Path (“the trail”) on this part of the stretch, and details the likely consequences in terms of the wider ‘Coastal Margin’ that will be created if our proposals are approved by the Secretary of State. Our report also sets out: any proposals we think are necessary for restricting or excluding coastal access rights to address particular issues, in line with the powers in the legislation; and any proposed powers for the trail to be capable of being relocated on particular sections (“roll- back”), if this proves necessary in the future because of coastal change.

  • The Bamber Family in Chipping
Descendants of only two of William's children can be traced to the present day. His daughter, Elizabeth, married Thomas Singleton in October, 1778, at St John's, Preston, and their descendants have been traced by one of them, Mr Gordon Parker, of Penketh, near Warrington. The other child was Edward, who farmed at Whittinghara and at Chipping. He married Jane Eccles in about 1792 and by her had eleven children. The most important, from my point of view, was the third child, James, who was born on 5th May, 1797, and baptized the following day at Fernyhalgh by Fr Anthony Lund. James grew up in Whittingham and eventually married Elizabeth Sumner, a Leagram girl, three or four years older than himself. They farmed for nearly thirty years at Birchen Lee but then moved to Throstle Nest on Thurnham Moss, newly drained by the Daltons of Thurnham Hall, near Lancaster. However, they eventually left Throstle Nest in the hands of their brother-in-law, James Chew, who had married James1 sister, Jane, and returned nearer home to Longridge. There James died on 8th May, 1874, followed only five months later by Elizabeth. Both were buried at St Mary's, Chipping. A painting of the old Birchen Lee Farm, c.l840f by John Weld of Leagram flail. James Bamber farmed Birchen Lee, from the 1830s to the 185Qsf before moving to Throstle Nest, Thurnham. The Thurnham connection did not end with James and Elizabeth, however, for several of their family remained in that district for many years. In particular, their eldest son, Thomas, farmed and raised a family at Bamber's Farm, Moss Lane; their daughter, Jane, born in 1826, was in service at Thurnham Hall before marrying John Birchall, of Queen Street, Lancaster; and their son, William, died and was buried at Thurnham on 23rd February, 1864.

PRESTON: Little Hoole, Longton, Much Hoole, Penwortham, Pl'eston, Rib bleton, Ribchester, Samlesbury, 'Valton-Ie-Dale, Whittingham, and Woodplumpton, which contained, in 1851, a population of 96,368 souls. It is divided into the six districts of Preston (east and west), Alston, Broughton, Longton, and Walton. There has been no new workhouse erected for this union, the five old ones being made to do duty in its stead. Their situations are Preston, 1Val ton, Penwortham, W oodplumpton, and Ribchester. The Preston workhouse occupies an airy and healthful situation in Deepdale road, a short dist, ance N.N.E. of the town, and a handsome erection, called" The Overseers' Buildings," was raised in 1848, at the corner of Saul-street and Lancaster-road, for the use of the officers of th& union. The guardians meet at the board-room here every Tuesday, at ten o'clock. Thomas Batty Addison, Esq., is chairman, and Thomas Birchall and Michael Satterthwaite, Esqrs., are vice chairmen; J oseph Thackeray, Esq., is clerk to the union and superintendent registrar. Among the Provident Institutions of Preston are many Friendly Societies, Lodges of Oddfellows, Foresters, Mechani.Js, Druids, Freemasons, the Catholic Brethren, Guilds, &0. The Sav'ing8~ Bank is also a provident institution, which affords a safe and bene cial investment for the savings of the humbler classes, and was first established at the National School here on the 11th of l"Iarch, 1816, but was removed to more convenient premises in Chapel street, in 1818. It now occupies a neat building in Lune-street, erected about seventeen years ago, but was removed to that street in 1830; and in 1852 possessed deposits, amounting to £170,298 4s.
