The Young Girls of Rochefort 1967

Great Directors: May 16 – June 12

French New Wave director Jacques Demy is best known for the dream- like worlds of color and youth he created with films like UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG and THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT. Collaborating with composer Michel Legrand, Demy distinguished himself from his European peers by carving a musical niche out of the film movements of the 1960s. These seven meticulous restorations from Janus Films of his most beloved films renew the Technicolor splash of great works like UNE CHAMBRE DE VILLE – not to mention the perennial beauty of frequent star Catherine Deneuve. Lola 1961 Showcasing the director’s skill at multiple genres, the other films in this Bay of Angels 1963 survey of Demy’s work include a wild romp in black and white (LOLA), a Umbrellas of Cherbourg 1964 non-musical drama (BAY OF ANGELS), a bizarre and adroit political satire The Young Girls of Rochefort 1967 (A SLIGHTLY PREGNANT MAN), and a fairy-tale fantasy (DONKEY SKIN). All are films from an artist of unique vision that still demand to be on the big Donkey Skin 1970 screen. Also included is THE WORLD OF JACQUES DEMY, a documentary A Slightly Pregnant Man 1973 by his wife, Agnes Varda. Une chambre de ville 1982 See reverse side for more information and dates. The World of Jacques Demy 1991 Directed by Agnes Varda.

Just in time for the 100th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin on film! From the heady days when Chaplin made nearly a film a week, the series captures the debut of his indelible Tramp character in only his third onscreen appearance (KID AUTO RACES AT VENICE) and other, lesser seen roles.
