The Girls Gone Wild guy, who is due for release from a Florida jail cell this week, recently told a psychiatrist that he would consider suicide if his imprison- ment was extended, according to a report obtained by the Smoking Gun. After a two-hour evaluation, Dr. Ronald Markman, who was hired by Francis’ defense team, determined the soft-porn impresario was “clinically stable,” but demonstrated “significant psychiatric issues.” The report was included in a defense filing seeking to have Francis transferred expeditiously from Florida to Reno, Nevada, where he faces tax evasion charges. Spider-Man 3 PS3, Xbox 360 Normally, you can expect a movie-licensed game to be bad. Almost all of them are. Pirates of the Carib- bean, Total Recall, Street Fighter: the Movie, Back to the Future-they were all bad. So when the Spider- man 2 movie game came out, it was kind of a shock, because it broke the rule. It was really fun to play. Well, now that Spider-Man 3 is on store shelves, you’d logically expect it to be just as great as the last game. Same developer, same characters, same storyline. It has to be at least as good as the last one, right? Unfortunately, no. If you are expecting to be wowed by the souped-up graphics the next-gen sys- tems are capable of, you may be disappointed. The characters are meant to look more detailed, but they really just look bumpy and weird. In the gameplay department, Spidey can do all of his signature moves from the former game, with added gameplay elements in the form of contextual button presses, played off with cinematic effects. It certainly is more dramatic, but ultimately doesn’t add a whole lot to the game. Overall, the game is best suited to Spider-Man fans only. To anyone else, I’d recommend Spider- man 2, which is probably in a bargain bin at a game store near you. new console downloads thursday nights Xbox 360 Double Dragon – This arcade brawler was the OG beat-em-up. 1:30 PM - San Marco Theatre - The Hip Hop Project (90 min.) Hip hop, and even more importantly expression, is the vehicle that drives a group of troubled New York City teenagers to self-discovery and progress in the documentary The Hip Hop Project. The film presents the story of this community outreach from conception to releasing a full-length hip hop album written, produced, and performed by the group. There is an intense focus on the program founder and director Chris “Kazi” Rolle who rose from homelessness to become a successful mentor for a number of teenagers experiencing tough, real life situations. The Hip Hop Project successfully touches the stories of the teenagers involved without losing focus or becoming convoluted. All are unique and touching, playing a big part of forming the content of their raps included in the album that they are creating together. When funds become scarce, hip hop mogul Russell Simmons and actor Bruce Willis step in to ensure that the group has their own studio space and equipment to finish the album. Although rap music is the catalyst and method of healing expression, the story transcends the music and delves into deeper life themes. Kazi encourages the group to not only better themselves as artists, but people – even taking his own advice and reaching out to his estranged mother. -BCrozier

Burrito Gallery – The BG is a sure bet. The vibe is always great, there’s plenty of seating, everyone can afford something on the menu, they have a terrific bar and outdoor seating. From the best fish tacos in town to the cleanest bathrooms downtown, the Burrito Gallery will be open during the film festival for lunch through late dinner. Stop back in for a cocktail and a snack before heading out to the afterparties. Chew – This is urban chic at it’s Chelsea-ist. Chew has an amazing selection of tasty appetizers and entrees. Their soups are always especially good, their coffee is the best downtown, and the croque madame is the best breakfast in the city, without a doubt. But Chew isn’t cheap, so if you want to impress a date, this is certainly a good way to go. Casbah – If you have a little time, take a quick drive over to Avondale and have some of the best Middle Eastern cuisine in Riverside’s favorite Hookah Bar and restaurant, The Casbah Café. Watch belly dancers while you share a hearty and healthy appetizer of hummous or stuffed grape leaves, and enjoy a tall imported beer. Sit in the lounge and smoke an apricot hookah with your friends. Its great food and good fun that isn’t far away. Check out their late night happy hour! Bistro Aix – Conveniently located on San Marco Boulevard between the film festival theatres in San Marco and the theatres downtown is the always hip and delicious Bistro Aix. Check out their new town and country look. Their “city” bar is spectacular and it is the perfect place to stop in for a good appetizer paired with a good wine between films, or for a delectable dinner that is worth savoring. BOOMTOWN – This may be your last chance to enjoy a delicious meal courtesy of Stephen Dare in their downtown location, as they will soon be moving out. If you’ve never seen their dinner theatre stage, check it out before it’s gone.

drinking Marks – Downtown regulars are accustomed to this smoke-free lounge. Always loaded with young professionals and the hotties that love them, Marks has a dance floor and their DJ keeps the floor full of people. Grab a quiet booth for some privacy or sit right at the bar for the best service. Marks is upscale fun. They have a cover to keep out some of the riff raff, but in honor of John Waters, if you wear polyester they’ll let you in free. Dive Bar – This kitsch bar is the perfect place to bring a group. Whether you fill in one of their retro booths, fill up their black light room, or just dominate a part of their huge bar, it is easy to make the place your own. From the softcore porn in the bathrooms to the Fridays-ish wall décor, it is as much like a confused generational theme park as it is a Hard Rock Café, but the drinks are usually stiffer than both places and there is rarely a cover charge. The PEARL – Although perhaps not an official afterparty, you can always count on great beers on tap, good DJs and plenty of party kids to be getting their dance on around the interior trees at The Pearl. Shanty town pub – Easily Springfield’s coolest pub, duck into this hole-in-the-wall for great tunes, a backyard bonfire, and some of the most exotic beers available on tap anywhere in town.

TSI – This discotheque has a terrific selection of draft beers, great indie rock, some pool tables, some old school video games, and a hipster dance floor. So mess your hair up and come get your freak on downtown-style.

SHERWOODS - You can always count on this classic San Marco bar to send you home stinking worse than an odorama card. they don’t call it slurwoods for nothing

Parking can be tricky in San Marco, since most of it is right on the strip and almost always is completely filled up. On the weekend you can sometimes find some spare parking in bank parking lots. Otherwise check out the church parking lot behind the church at Hendricks and Atlantic. A better option may be to park downtown, where weekend parking is plentiful, and take the trolley to San Marco and back.

These little balls of deep-fried cheese goodness are offset by a sweet, caramelized black pepper shallot marmalade. There are a number of tempting selections under salads. Salmon and herb-crusted snapper each have a starring role in two different selections. The Salmon rests atop a bed of soba noodles, spiced with a chili-lem- ongrass vinaigrette and garnished with pan-Asian touches. Keeping company with the herb-crusted snapper are vegetables and quinoa. Quinoa is a grain traditionally used in South America, which cooks up in a fluffy manner, has slightly nutty flavor, and is often used as an alternative to rice. As you can probably gather from these selections, some of the salads don’t start with the traditional base of lettuce or spring greens. 32 may 17-23, 2007 | entertaining u newspaper cassadaga album review

Artist: Bright Eyes Title: Cassadaga Release Date: 04.10.07 Label:

In their latest album, Cassadaga, Bright Eyes has left the rock fold to officially join in the new country move- ment. They haven’t become alt-country, but Conor has definitely taken the Bob Dylan comparisons to heart. The last two Bright Eyes albums were released almost simultaneously in 2005. There was Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, a largely electronic rock album, and I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, which was pretty much a country album. Although Digital Ash in a Digital Urn had some worthwhile songs, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning was obviously the standout album of the two. For one thing, it was rich with beautiful poetics and sharply critical of American culture, which is a stalwart, and for another it was musically and heartfully inspired from the very first song. On Cassadaga Bright Eyes brings on slide guitar, organ, and a slough of the classic country arrangements to fit right in with Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, and Emma Lou Harris, as far as instrumentation and song structures are concerned. But Conor knows where his strength lies and it is in powerfully poetic lyrics sung in his faltering and quivering croon. Cassadaga sounds like a recent Bob Dylan album, only without the somber accumulation of years behind it, making it sometimes come off as insincere. Tracks like ‘Make a Plan to Love Me’ and ‘Lime Tree’ seem a little con- trived and drag on the continuity of the album, the other tracks are like anthemic Americana. While many of the longtime Bright Eyes fans say that the 2000 release was their pinnacle album and they have been on the downhill ever since, I predict that Conor still has a lot of great songs yet to come out of him, and Cassadaga certainly has a few of them (check out the song ‘’). What I didn’t know, until I heard it around the water cooler, is that Cassadaga is a town in Northern Florida that has a high population of psychics. Wikipedia even refers to it as the “psychic capitol of the world.” Omaha musi- cians seem to be in love with the idea of album themes, as evidenced by every Cursive release, but Cassadaga only loosely follows the psychic theme. Songs such as ‘Four Winds’ and ‘Coat Check Dream Song’ adhere to the theme of séances and “the east,” but overall the album is more about Conor’s own removal from his usual California-to- Omaha Western-ness than it is about Cassadaga, Florida. The album does start out with an almost Revolution Number 9 intro behind a conversation with a psychic. Perhaps one of the psychics you get when you call 1-888-CASSADAGA. And the album is certainly laden with the laid-back ideals of the South. From ‘If the Brakeman Turns My Way’ to ‘I Must Belong Somewhere’ there is a jubilant sense of resignation to this country album. I would be remiss not to mention that this album has the best packaging I have seen since they stopped mass-marketing vinyl. The cover looks like a blotchy gray until you run the Ouiji-like eye over it and see the images concealed in the cover art. Conor’s poetry is as sharp, insightful, and articulate as ever and that makes up for any amount of boredom the country formula brings to this Bright Eyes album. - by jon bosworth

look out album review

Artist: Hackensaw Boys Title: Look Out Release Date: 06.19.07 Label: Records

With the opening sounds of a and harmonized violins, I had a vision of being stuck in a place far from my comfort zone. It was pure bluegrass- aggressive, oddly cheerful, and creepy to the ears of a guy who listens to and Death from Above 1979. But those sounds immediately morphed into something decidedly more familiar. Even though the song remained as bluegrass as…well…bluegrass, I recognized the modern pop melodies and detected a hint of confident inauthenticity. One of the founding members, Tom Peloso, is currently in Modest Mouse, so there is a timbre of new rock in their old-style string band. When you hear the Hackensaw Boys, you immediately recognize the old style they’re playing, but it sounds fresh and young. The Hackensaw Boys’ music is more aptly described as Americana than bluegrass. Some of the songs on Look Out do not prominently feature banjo or mandolin, but all of them are catchy and provide charming storytelling-style lyrics. They touch on many styles, and two of my favorite songs, ‘Oh, Girl’ and ‘Sally Ann’ are composed in a minor key. The Hackensaw Boys liberally apply their outstanding vocal harmonies to each song on the album, with the most fascinating example found on ‘Look Out Dog, Slow Down Train’, in which they replicate the sound of a train whistle. Completely entertaining and joyous to listen to, you’ll find yourself singing along as soon as you catch the tune. I used to think bluegrass and Americana music was made by and for older folks, but as the Squirrel Nut Zippers has modernized swing for a younger audience, so have the Hackensaw Boys done for bluegrass. - By Donald Dusinberre

forecasted conditions by Shaun Robbins

Thank God for Global Warming if it is going to keep bringing us waves all summer. We have been blessed the last two weeks with consistent surf, and it doesn’t seem to want to stop just yet. We should see the waves start to pick back up on Friday and Saturday bringing in chest-high sets. Sunday and Monday bring a drop in the size, but the rideable surf should stick around for most of the week. Make sure you make it out, because at Jax Beach we always have the chance of a long flat spell. But don’t take my weekly word for it, call or log on to your local report daily to find out what the present conditions are for your favorite break.
