Beyoncé's Lemonade Collaborator Melo-X Gives First Interview on Making of the Album.” Pitchfork, 25 Apr

Works Cited 46 Appendix 49 Abstract Beyoncé’s latest album has become an instant social phenomenon worldwide. Given its innovative poetic, visual, musical and socio-politic impact, the famous and controversial African American singer has taken an untraveled road—both personal and professional. The purpose of this essay is to provide a close reading of the poetry, music, lyrics and visuals in four sections from Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed Lemonade (2016). To this end, I have chosen what I believe are the most representative sections of Lemonade together with their respective songs. Thus, I focus on the song “Hold Up” from Denial; “Daddy Lessons” from Accountability, “Freedom” from Hope, and “Formation,” where Beyoncé addresses topics such as infidelity, racism, women’s representation, and racism and inequality. I analyse these topics through a close-reading and interpretation of Warsan Shire’s poetry (a source of inspiration), as well as Beyoncé’s own music, lyrics, and imagery. From this analysis, it is safe to say that Lemonade is a relevant work of art that will perdure in time, since it highlights positive representations of African-Americans, at the same time Beyoncé critically denounces the current racial unrest lived in the USA. -

Self-reported Fandom in Offline and Online Spaces: The Television Viewing Behaviours and Fandom Characteristics of selected Young Women in Johannesburg by Aimee Rebecca Viljoen 201404354 Submitted in Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Masters in Audiovisual Communication in the Department of Journalism, Film and Television in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Johannesburg Supervisor: Dr Nadia Van Der Merwe Co-Supervisor: Dr Phyllis Dannhauser Date: 31 October 2019 ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to fill a gap in research on the television viewing practices and subsequent fandom behaviour of selected, female, South African television viewers. In a society where online interaction in a variety of participatory groups, like fandoms, have become an international norm, South Africa is still struggling to get its citizens connected to the online sphere. This is in part due to a lack of internet infrastructure as well as grossly high data costs compared to other developing countries. -
Robe for Idols SA 2017 | 1
Robe for Idols SA 2017 | 1 The twelfth season of Idols South Africa wrapped up with a stunning finale at Carnival City Big Top Arena in Johannesburg, broadcast live on the Mzansi Magic network with a highly vocal audience of 3,500 packing into the venue … and lighting designer Joshua Cutts of Visual Frontier choosing nearly 200 Robe fixtures to be at the core of his rig. As always the challenge was to make this final season look better and different than before, and with over 80 million votes cast across Series 12, a lot of eyes are on it and production values have been honed accordingly to reflect the intense public interest and impress fans. A skilled and imaginative creative team once again united to produce amazing results. Technical production – lighting, sound, video, set and rigging – was delivered by Dream Sets for producers SIC Entertainment and the series, which also included nine elimination rounds recorded Robe for Idols SA 2017 | 2 on the Drama Stage at the State Theatre in Pretoria, was directed by Gavin Wratten. The popularity of this and other singing / talent contests in South Africa, highlights how a diversity of music, song and lyrical based entertainment is integral to the culture and heartbeat of the country. Throughout the 2016 Idols final series, there was a big emphasis on lighting supported by video – rather than the other way around – and this continued at Carnival City, with a framed half-circle of LED screen upstage and the rest of the set architecture and lighting positions following this curvature. -

MA3 Drives Idols South Africa | 1
MA3 drives Idols South Africa | 1 Lighting designer Joshua Cutts was thrilled to drive a grandMA3 for the Idols South Africa 2018 finale hosted at Carnival City in Johannesburg. Hot on the hills of American Idols – the singing competition which has enjoyed 16 seasons since initially being aired in 2002 – Idols South Africa has completed its 14thseason with season 15 already confirmed for 2019. Remarkably, the viewership in South Africa has grown, and while 2017 was thought to be record breaking year with 98 million votes, this past season saw 142 million votes! MA3 drives Idols South Africa | 2 The dream team worked together for the ninth consecutive year and comprised of Dream Sets, who were the full technical supplier headed by Project Manager Eben Peltz, lighting and set designer Joshua Cutts from Visual Frontier, and the producers, [sic] Entertainment with Gavin Wratten once again the Executive Producer and Director. The broadcast was aired on the Mzansi Magic Network. MA3 drives Idols South Africa | 3 Going back to the drawing board, Joshua sat down with Gavin Wratten and sketched some shapes. “We had done circles and squares before and we wondered what shapes we should do this year,” Joshua recalls. “We started with triangles which we found were not enough of a shape. So, we extended them and made them abstract triangles. I had to think of a way to make them interlink amongst each other. It was less about a construction of major set pieces and rather about using existing stock to achieve something.” The end result was the tallest set the team had ever created in Carnival City’s Big Top Arena, reaching almost 13m high. -
