Investing in the Content Production and Japanese Content Distribution Business for Television Broadcast in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar
News Release Cool Japan Fund Inc. Tokyo, March 9, 2018 Investing in the Content Production and Japanese Content Distribution Business for Television Broadcast in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Cool Japan Fund is pleased to announce an investment of approximately 16 million USD in a joint venture project for conducting content production by introducing up-to-date broadcast equipment and distributing Japanese content in Myanmar in cooperation with Japan International Broadcasting Inc. (JIB) and the Fund Corporation for the Overseas Development of Japan’s ICT and Postal Services (JICT) through a major media conglomerate in Myanmar called Shwe Than Lwin Media Co., Ltd. (STLM), and its terrestrial broadcasting station Myanmar National Television (MNTV). This enterprise will not only newly offer Japanese content to MNTV and other STLM’s channels, which have broadcasted NHK’s historical dramas such as Sanadamaru and Atsuhime as well as other programs from Japanese commercial TV stations, but also produce collaboration programs by using the Japanese television program formats. Through distributing Japanese content in Myanmar, Cool Japan Fund aims to promote Japanese products and services, and contribute to strengthen the relations between both countries. There is also a potential ripple effect leading the increase of tourists from Myanmar to Japan in the future. In Myanmar, the entry of private terrestrial television broadcasting station was approved in 2005 and with the spread of television sets and the improvement of the broadcasting legislation system, there is a strong expectation of market growth in media industry. STLM is a major media conglomerate in Myanmar that owns a satellite broadcasting platform, three terrestrial broadcasting stations and a radio station. -

In a society where online interaction in a variety of participatory groups, like fandoms, have become an international norm, South Africa is still struggling to get its citizens connected to the online sphere. This is in part due to a lack of internet infrastructure as well as grossly high data costs compared to other developing countries. -

High Status of Women in Burma
THE ‘TRaditiOnal’ HigH StatUS oF Wom En In BuRm A: A Historical Reconsideration Chie Ikeya This article traces the genealogy of a persistent cultural stereo- type that has long defined and constituted academic and popular knowledge about Burma and, more broadly, Southeast Asia: the “tra- ditional” high status of women. Although Southeast Asia scholars today generally concur that claims about the high status of women in the region are oversimplified and problematic, postcolonial scholars of Burma largely have perpetuated the discourse of gender equality, which has deterred any attempt to complicate conceptualizations of gender relations and hierarchies in historical Burma. This study investigates the process whereby the “traditional” autonomy of Burmese women was constructed in opposition to the likewise “traditional” subordinate status of women in South Asia and in contestation of the superiority of European culture and soci- ety. It argues that this “tradition” is a product of the multivalent representational practice by colonizing and colonized women and men in unequal relations of power who coauthored essentially and powerfully gendered discourses of colonialism, modernization, and nationalism. This article concludes by suggesting possible ways to move beyond the practice of enshrining persistent and monolithic cultural stereotypes as essential components of Southeast Asian his- tory and to engender scholarship of the region firmly located within, not isolated from, specific and complex historical contexts. Gender and Tradition in Southeast Asian History Since at least the nineteenth century, the notion of the “traditional” high status of women in Southeast Asia has been foundational to paradigmatic understandings of the region as a distinct geopolitical and cultural entity separate from the rest of Asia (i.e., South and East Asia) yet part of the greater East. -

Robe for Idols SA 2017 | 1
Robe for Idols SA 2017 | 1 The twelfth season of Idols South Africa wrapped up with a stunning finale at Carnival City Big Top Arena in Johannesburg, broadcast live on the Mzansi Magic network with a highly vocal audience of 3,500 packing into the venue … and lighting designer Joshua Cutts of Visual Frontier choosing nearly 200 Robe fixtures to be at the core of his rig. As always the challenge was to make this final season look better and different than before, and with over 80 million votes cast across Series 12, a lot of eyes are on it and production values have been honed accordingly to reflect the intense public interest and impress fans. A skilled and imaginative creative team once again united to produce amazing results. Technical production – lighting, sound, video, set and rigging – was delivered by Dream Sets for producers SIC Entertainment and the series, which also included nine elimination rounds recorded Robe for Idols SA 2017 | 2 on the Drama Stage at the State Theatre in Pretoria, was directed by Gavin Wratten. The popularity of this and other singing / talent contests in South Africa, highlights how a diversity of music, song and lyrical based entertainment is integral to the culture and heartbeat of the country. Throughout the 2016 Idols final series, there was a big emphasis on lighting supported by video – rather than the other way around – and this continued at Carnival City, with a framed half-circle of LED screen upstage and the rest of the set architecture and lighting positions following this curvature.
