It is hard to ignore the menace in the name, the morbid delight one gets in pronouncing a name that is riddled with such meaning. At some level, human society is fascinated with the notion of a vampire: a revenant that ret urns from beyond the grave to extract the blood of the living in order to extend its unholy life. It plays on our basic fears as humans, the fear of the dead, the fear of dying, the fear of the unknown, and a fascination with this substance consisting of p lasma, platelets, and cells that runs through our veins. Bram Stoker took all of these fears to new heights when he wrote Dracula , one of the most enduring horror stories to ever be composed. The novel has generated enormous criticism that has chiefly been divided into the camps of Irishness, colonialism/imperialism, and sexuality. Whether it was intentional or not, Stoker’s novel is a breeding ground for almost every sexual fetish, deviance, and perversion that is known to mankind. Characters in the novel engage in mutilation, blood-drinking, perverted fellation, sexual acts in front of their spouse, female domination, male domination, group rape, homosexuality, male penetration, and sadomasochism. -

Revampings of Dracula in Contemporary Fiction Margaret L Carter [Margaret L Carter, author of The Vampire in Literature: A Critical Bibliography and editor of Dracula: The Vampire and the Critics, has recently published Different Blood: The Vampire as Alien (www.xlibris.com/DifferentBlood.html).] Although Count Dracula is slain in the final pages of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, throughout the subsequent century he has enjoyed innumerable resurrections in film and literature. Many of these incarnations might be unrecognizable to Stoker as the character he created. Fictional treatments of Dracula, especially those that have appeared within the past thirty years, reflect changes in attitudes toward vampires in general. In contrast to the characterization of vampires in Stoker’s own fiction and that of his contemporaries, in recent decades various authors have rendered these “monsters” sympathetically. Earlier nineteenth-century works do contain a few hints of sympathy for their vampire characters. They inspire sympathy or attraction, however, despite their inhuman nature rather than because of it. They still must be destroyed. The eponymous monster in Varney the Vampyre (1847) displays remorse for his bloodthirsty past and finally commits suicide by leaping into a volcano. Carmilla, in J Sheridan Le Fanu’s novella (1872), presents herself initially as victim rather than predator, and the narrator, Laura, finds her attractive, yet Carmilla’s existence nevertheless ends in violent destruction. Nina Auerbach characterizes pre-Stoker vampires as “not demon lovers or snarling aliens ... but singular friends” in a literary period when “it was a privilege to walk with a vampire” (13). This “sinister, superior sharer” enjoys an “intimate intercourse with mortals,” even though a “dangerously close” one (13). -

CHAPTER The Leader’s Light or 1 Shadow We know where light is coming from by looking at the shadows. —Humanities scholar Paul Woodruff What’s Ahead This chapter introduces the dark (bad, toxic) side of leadership as the first step in promoting good or ethical leadership. The metaphor of light and shadow drama- tizes the differences between moral and immoral leaders. Leaders have the power to illuminate the lives of followers or to cover them in darkness. They cast light when they master ethical challenges of leadership. They cast shadows when they (1) abuse power, (2) hoard privileges, (3) mismanage information, (4) act incon- sistently, (5) misplace or betray loyalties, and (6) fail to assume responsibilities. A Dramatic Difference/The Dark Side of Leadership In an influential essay titled “Leading From Within,” educational writer and consultant Parker Palmer introduces a powerful metaphor to dramatize the distinction between ethical and unethical leadership. According to Palmer, the difference between moral and immoral leaders is as sharp as the contrast between light and darkness, between heaven and hell: A leader is a person who has an unusual degree of power to create the conditions under which other people must live and move and have their being, conditions that can be either as illuminating as heaven or as shadowy as hell. Psychogeography in Alan Moore's from Hell
English History as Jack the Ripper Tells It: Psychogeography in Alan Moore’s From Hell Ann Tso (McMaster University, Canada) The Literary London Journal, Volume 15 Number 1 (Spring 2018) Abstract: Psychogeography is a visionary, speculative way of knowing. From Hell (2006), I argue, is a work of psychogeography, whereby Alan Moore re-imagines Jack the Ripper in tandem with nineteenth-century London. Moore here portrays the Ripper as a psychogeographer who thinks and speaks in a mystical fashion: as psychogeographer, Gull the Ripper envisions a divine and as such sacrosanct Englishness, but Moore, assuming the Ripper’s perspective, parodies and so subverts it. In the Ripper’s voice, Moore emphasises that psychogeography is personal rather than universal; Moore needs only to foreground the Ripper’s idiosyncrasies as an individual to disassemble the Grand Narrative of English heritage. Keywords: Alan Moore, From Hell, Jack the Ripper, Psychogeography, Englishness and Heritage ‘Hyper-visual’, ‘hyper-descriptive’—‘graphic’, in a word, the graphic novel is a medium to overwhelm the senses (see Di Liddo 2009: 17). Alan Moore’s From Hell confounds our sense of time, even, in that it conjures up a nineteenth-century London that has the cultural ambience of the eighteenth century. The author in question is wont to include ‘visual quotations’ (Di Liddo 2009: 450) of eighteenth- century cultural artifacts such as William Hogarth’s The Reward of Cruelty (see From Hell, Chapter Nine). His anti-hero, Jack the Ripper, is also one to flaunt his erudition in matters of the long eighteenth century, from its literati—William Blake, Alexander Pope, and Daniel Defoe—to its architectural ideal, which the works of Nicholas Hawksmoor supposedly exemplify. -
'Nosferatu' Revisted
Fewster: 'Nosferatu' Revisted What is it about the Dracula narrative that is attractive dramatically? Its format is hardly exciting in that it is written as a series of letters. Similarly what could one possibly do in a theatrical production that has not been done? This would form the key research question that underlined my own subsequent production i.e. how does one approach such a classic? Indeed, when I ran a research seminar on the intended production, I was met with initial scepticism and resistance with a general response of “Why bother?” This is a fair question when one considers the plethora of dramatic renditions on stage and screen, in particular the ubiquitous vampire television series. Ultimately the answer to this question could only be explored through practice: textual in adapting the script, and physical in rehearsing the play. The capacity for Dracula and the vampires to turn into—variously—wolves, bats, rats and from smoke into the flesh of the living dead stimulated my creative thinking about how one might stage these transformations. I also began to imagine how an audience might literally follow the story’s protagonist, Jonathan Harker and his journey to Transylvania and back through everyday spaces such as corridors, café, paths and old buildings on the University Campus where I work. I re-read the Stoker novel and re-examined the two German films Nosferatu (1922 Dir. Friedrich Murnau) and the remake: Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979 Dir. Werner Herzog). As a playwright, I chose these sources for two reasons: I did not want to overload my creative sensibility with too much source material and the novel and the 1922 film are in my view historically the key transmitters of the Dracula fable. -

THE DISTRICT MESSENGER The Newsletter of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London Roger Johnson, Mole End, 41 Sandford Road, Chelmsford CM2 6DE no. 125 9th November 1992 The (London) Evening Standard of 29th October had an article "Is This the Real Sherlock Holmes?" by Bill West, who identifies Edwin Holmes and his assistant Thomas Watson, pioneers of the electrical security system in the 19th century. I can provide photocopies if you're interested. The BBC Radio 4 series The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes,Holmes, with Clive Merrison and Michael Williams, concluded a couple of weeks ago with a full-blooded "Final Problem", written by Bert Coules. Tape cassettes of the plays were already in the shops, and very good they are too. Vols 1 & 2 each contain four stories, while vol. 3 has three ("The Final Problem" occupies a whole cassette, being split neatly in the middle). Bert tells me that the recording of The Return is well under way. Guest stars include Denis Quilley as Bob Carruthers, Peter Sallis as Jonas Oldacre, Peter Vaughan as Milverton and David March as Lord Bellinger; Michael Pennington and Frederick Treves will be heard again as Moriarty & Moran in "The Empty House". Charles Hall (12 Paisley Terrace, Edinburgh EH8 7JW; phone 031-661 2822) has a new list of SheSherlockrlock Holmes Mementos & Related Items, featuring the various aspects of his own artistic versatility: caricature postcards, in colour and black & white, earthenware busts and mugs, metal figures, and the few remaining copies of his book The Sherlock Holmes Collection --- all very collectable stuff. The latest additions to Charles' range are three low-relief metal sculptures: a double-sided profile of Holmes about 1½" high (£2.60), and full-figure caricatures of Dr Watson and Mrs Hudson about 2" high (each £2.70); the pieces each come mounted on a shallow wooden plinth.
