John Adams did so Monday afternoon in ♦ K6 the Open Pairs when he played Board 12 (pictured at left) ♠ Q3 ♣ KJ6 ♠ KT9 in 6NT and made it after a slight defensive miscue. What ♥ 6 ♥ K87532 truly sparked his interest was the unique line of play that al- ♦ T985432 ♦ QJ lows 6♣ to come home (double-dummy even against best ♣ T84 ♠ A6 ♣ 95 defense) after West leads his singleton heart. It was this ♥ AT94 problem which was published as a quiz in yesterday’s Daily ♦ A7 Bulletin and a few intrepid players tried to come up with the ♣ AQ732 winning solution. One was successful.

Eleven tricks is clear enough: five clubs, two diamonds, one spade, and three hearts given East’s of the ♥K of both the ♥Q at trick one and the ♥J later in the hand. As for the slam- going trick, it appears that the most likely source will come from setting up the spade suit with a . The sticking point is to do so without permitting East to gain the lead before trumps are pulled (to prevent West from getting his heart ruff), and to do so in such a way as to retain late communication to the dummy to score the established spade. Pulling trumps and then playing two rounds of spades won’t work unless the defense kindly leads a third round of spades for you. More likely they will simply lead diamonds when in with the spade leaving you an short to both ruff out the spade and then enjoy the resulting spade winner. So if pulling trumps is out, the only viable alternative is to lead spades now. A spade to the ace another spade won’t work well - East will happily overtake his partner’s queen with his king and set the slam with a heart switch. Nor can declarer attempt to duck a round of spades since East will win the first round with his nine or ten. The only thing left is to lead out the ♠J and when you do an interesting thing happens. If East chooses to duck this, you simply let it ride around to West who is powerless to prevent you from now cashing the other spade, pulling three rounds of trumps ending in dummy where you can now ruff out the ♠K while you still have the ♦K as an entry to score your established spade. So East covers the jack with his king and you have no choice but to win the ace. Now it is West’s turn for some marginal amount of brilliance. He must get out of East’s way by following with the queen under your ace so that you do not simply throw him in. This will allow West to win the second spade before the spades can be established. Declarer at this point cannot play another spade for the heart ruff will do him in. With nothing else to do declarer pull trumps, plays a diamond to dummy, runs the ♥J, plays another diamond back to his ace, run the rest of his trumps to reach this four card ending with South to lead: ♠ 8752 ♥ - South cashes his last club and East is faced with a di- ♦ - lemma. If he pitches a heart declarer’s ten will promote into ♠ ♣ ♠ 3 - T9 a winner, so he lets go what appears to be an idle spade. ♥ ♥ - K8 Of course declarer has just executed a strip squeeze and he ♦ ♦ T98 - now finishes East off by exiting a spade who must now lead ♣ ♠ ♣ - 6 - a heart into declarer’s tenace (no pun intended - literally the ♥ AT ten and ace of hearts). ♦ - ♣ 2 Strip squeezes are often pedestrian and occasionally we encounter them as if by chance. In this case declarer had to carefully construct the position so that the squeeze would fall into place. Simply running winners without cramming the ♠J through the defense would ultimately fail be- cause West can easily guard the spade suit thereby taking East off the hook. One of the truly beautiful aspects of this hand is the specific layout spade suit. There are other distributions that would allow the contract to come home, such as both spade honors being in either hand; when West has them he can be thrown in early with two rounds of spades; when East has them he is simply strip squeezed without the need to run the jack first. When the honors are split, and West holds three spades, declarer needs the ten and the nine to be with West. When the honors are split and West holds two spades, as above, this is where the spade spots really become important. West’s spot is smaller than either of East’s remaining spades, allowing declarer to pull off his squeeze. Had West been dealt the nine or the ten in lieu of the three, the squeeze fails because East can jettison his two remaining spades to avoid the throw in since West’s spade spot (the nine or the ten) would beat declarer’s six as well as any of dummy’s spades. Congratulations to Larry Kahn, of Vienna, who was the only person to submit the fully correct answer. In Memory of Madge Gallant Madge Gallant, a constant fixture in the Washington Bridge League for many decades, passed away on November 10th, 2005. Up until near her death, Madge was our Unit Game’s Partnership Chairman. Away from the bridge scene, Madge loved dogs, particularly labs and golden retrievers, was a fan of classical piano music, and most of all, being a devoted wife and very proud mother and grandmother. When it came to church, Madge would attend early morning mass so that she would be available to help out with the bridge games during the day. In Memory of Ben Laden Ben Laden passed away in January of 2009. He was a truly avid bridge player (two good friends, Bob Stearns and Dick Wegman, both re- counted in his obituary how Ben got them involved in duplicate). Ben was also a former member of the Washington Bridge League Board of Directors and also served one year as our Tournament Co-Chairman. Away from bridge, Ben taught economics at Ohio State University. Among Ben’s wonderful attributes were his genuine warmth and his gracious manner at the bridge table. Event Names Several of our events are named for people who were all members of your host unit, the Wash- ington Bridge League, who were volunteers and workers, and who are unfortunately no longer with us. We hope to tell you a little about each one daily when their event is played. If you would like to learn more about any of the folks being honored, please visit the bulletin board outside the main ballrooms where you will find a more complete writeup on each person featured this week.

District Six Breakfast and Mid-Atlantic Dinner Meetings on Saturday We will be holding the District Six Breakfast Saturday morning at 10:15am downstairs (one floor below the ballrooms) in the Linden Oak Room. The same location will also be used for the Mid- Atlantic Dinner Saturday afternoon at 4:45pm. Bidding Boxes MABC policy is that bidding boxes are used in all events. All players must use them unless they have a sight problem or other physical handicap. Explanatory cards are available in the tourna- ment office for players who are unable to use bidding boxes.

Knockouts Knockouts are bracketed based on the average masterpoint holdings of all team members. To receive an overall award, a player must play at least half of the boards his team plays, including half of the boards played in the (combined) semifinal and final matches. He receives only the award earned in the last match of which he has played at least half that his team won. (Exam- ple: a player plays in the first match, sits out the second which the team wins (earning 3/4 over- all), and then plays again in the third match, which the team loses. This player has earned only the match award from the first match. The rest of the team receives the points for 3/4 overall.) Compact KO teams must be composed of exactly four players. Any KO event which is advertised as bracketed but only draws enough teams for one bracket shall be run as a Handicapped event.

Zero Tolerance policy: Be nice! To establish an atmosphere which promotes the enjoyment of bridge as both a competitive and social game, the MABC has adopted the ACBL’s policy of courteous behavior. For tournaments to be fun, cooperation from all (players, organizers, staff, and volunteers) is necessary. Please re- port conduct that is unacceptable by calling the director immediately, keeping in mind that we must be tolerant of other people in general and bridge players in particular. Also, please report especially outstanding or refreshing conduct on a player memo form (available from any direc- tor or on the information table). J Commendable J L Unacceptable L Being a good ‘host’ or ‘guest’ at the table; Badgering, rudeness, insinuations, intimidation; Greeting others in a friendly manner; Using profanity, threats, or violence; Praising the bidding and/or play of an opponent. Negative comments about opponents’ or partner’s play or bidding; Gloating over good results; Constant and gratuitous lessons and analyses at the table; Loud or disruptive calls for or arguing with directors; Ringing cell phones/pagers will receive penalties; Continuing slow play. Courteous behavior brings out the best in everyone. Please consider the manner in which you have been behaving. Try to eliminate those mannerisms and behaviors which may cause others to be uncomfortable, and increase those which make you a person others wish to be around. We all have in common a love of bridge. We should focus on our similarities, increase our tolerance of one another, and always behave civilly toward other players. The intent in creating this policy is to create an environment in which it is never necessary to issue a penalty. However, the publicity surrounding this new program constitutes your only warning. Serious breaches of good behavior will be penalized at their first occurrence. Disciplin- ary penalties are not subject to appeal. Please call the director if you run into such a situation; the directors can’t do anything about the problem if they are not aware. Players who, for emergency situations, need to leave their phones turned on should leave the phone with a director.
