Kishonite was studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and was found to be cubic, space group Fm3m, with a = 4.2680(10) Å, V = 77.75(3) Å3, and Z = 4. Oreillyite was studied by both single-crystal X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy and was found to be trigonal, space group P31m, with a = 4.7853(5) Å, c = 4.4630(6) Å, V = 88.51 Å3, and Z = 3. The presence of such a mineralization in these xenoliths supports the idea of the presence of reduced fluids in the sublithospheric mantle influencing the transport of volatile species (e.g., C, H) from the deep Earth to the surface. The minerals and their names have been approved by the Commission of New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (No. 2020-023 and 2020-030a). Introduction The study of the xenoliths occurring in pyroclastic ejecta of small Cretaceous basaltic volcanoes exposed on Mt Carmel [1–8] has revealed a very peculiar, exotic and ultra-reduced mineral assemblage reflecting the interaction of deep-seated basaltic magmas with mantle-derived CH4 + H2 at high fluid/melt ratios. During these ongoing studies, two new minerals, kishonite (VH2) and oreillyite (Cr2N) have been identified and are described here. The sample containing kishonite was recovered from bulk alluvial samples in the Kishon Mid Reach Zone 2. Chemical Composition Quantitative elemental microanalyses of the type grain of kishonite were carried out using a CAMECA 100 electron microprobe (WDS mode, 15 kV and 10 nA, 1 µm beam size, counting times × 20 s for peak and 10 s for background; Gennevilliers, France).

Minister for Mines 89686-1 Since the publication of the last issue of this booklet in 1966 a major expansion of mineral production in Western Australia has been achieved. Deposits of iron, nickel, natural gas, bauxite, heavy mineral sands, uranium and diamond are now being worked or are known to be commercial. Over the period 1966 to 1971, following the initial discovery of nickel sulphide at Kambalda, a speculative boom in base metal exploration developed that could only be likened to the gold rush days around the turn of the century. Although not all of the exploration activity in this period was well directed, many new discoveries were made as a result of the ready availability of risk capital. In the wake of the boom it is mainly the true prospectors that remain-the individual, to whom the still sparsely populated areas of the State hold an irresistible appeal and the chance of rich bonanza, and the established and dedicated mining companies for whom exploration is a necessary and vital part of the minerals industry. 1 am confident that the persistence of these prospectors will be rewarded with yet further discoveries of economic mineral deposits. Western Australia, with an area of over 2.5 million square kilometres, has a wide diversity of rocks representing all geological periods, and vast areas have been incompletely prospected. This booklet presents an up to date account of the minerals that are, or have been, economically exploited in Western Australia.

    December 2017 From the Executive Director by Ted Bornhorst Once again, the season holiday season is beginning and it is time for the museum's annual newsletter. The museum had a good year as I’ve reported to you in this year's editions of Showcase. I hold back some news, as hard as that is, in order to make this Newsletter special. From A. E. Seaman to today, the accomplishments of museum staff have contributed to the success of the museum. These accomplishments have been honored, but one honor goes beyond a normal award- a mineral named for the recipient provides a permanent mineralogical legacy for them and by association for the museum. The museum’s namesake and founder was recognized by the mineral named seamanite, late curator Kiril Spiroff by spiroffite, and recently retired curator, George Robinson, by georgerobinsonite. And now another as you will read below. The museum and the accomplishments of its staff are not possible without your support. We would not exist without the mineral collection which has been built mostly through private donations. Some examples of continuing mineral donations that enhance the collection are given below. We would also not exist if it were not for the financial assistance of both Michigan Tech and private donors. About a week ago, a visitor to the museum asked to talk with me about creating an endowment for the museum with a specific focus through his estate. Endowments are a permanent and continuing source of support for the museum. While most of our endowments are a result of generous estate gifts, others are being funded by current and future donations such as the Elizabeth Bekkala Endowed Memorial Fund created in 2017 by Angela and Corey Hammond.
