acknowledged that we are living in a period where the focus of eco- nom ic development is shi!ing from West to East, especially through the emergence I of the new economies of China and India. "e changing direction of economic power and in#uence is accompanied by an increasing interest in cultural engagement between the East and the West, both on governmental and civil society level. In view of the current global economic crisis however, one can see that culture is not necessarily top priority on the agenda of decisions makers. But particularly in di$cult times, culture is there to assure human development beyond national GDP and it plays an important role in developing a healthy, balanced modern society. "erefore support towards cultural exchange between the East and the West is important in assuring a continuous dialogue and increased cultural understanding. Support for international cultural cooperation is at the core to achieve this. "e EUROPE CHINA CULTURAL COMPASS project is part of an ongoing dia- logue between Europe and China. It responds to the need to document this dialogue, to re#ect on it, for a continuous improvement in the process. By presenting a broad range of information and perspectives relevant to Europe-China cultural cooperation, the COM- PASS wants to contribute to the understanding of Europe-China cultural co oper ation. "rough three types of information – knowledge, experience, and resources – the in ten tion is to help prepare cultural practitioners for collaboration. "e COMPASS addresses both Chinese and European readers. To meet the di%erent needs of the two target groups, two separate publications were produced, one in Chinese and one in English. Both publications follow the same overall structure, however each contains

Hou Hanru: Yes, the case in China is really similar. In the 980s, when video was introduced to China as an artistic medium, it began to be used by lots of performance artists. They didn’t really have video—they had documentary, like photography, video documentaries, and very, very brief videotapes, because at that time such technology was not so popular. Only professionals had video cameras—mainly people working in television or with advertising companies. The equipment was very expensive, so few artists had access to it. One of the first artists to really use video both to document his performances and to make independent work was Zhang Peili.

Dr. med. univ. Katharina Anna Sabernig In diesem mit einer halben Stelle ausgestatteten Forschungsprojekt wurden die anatomischen Errungenschaften eines Leibarztes des Fünften Dalai Lamas analysiert. Der Arzt und Augenchirurg Blo bzang Chos grags (Lobsang Chödrag) verfasste Ende des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts einen Text, der den damaligen Medizinstudierenden das Erlernen von Lehrinhalten erleichtern sollte. Die in diesem Text enthaltenen Inhalte sind insofern bemerkenswert, als sie in klassischen Texten beschriebene traditionelle Kenntnisse kritisch hinterfragen. Lobsang Chödrag hat – für die damalige Zeit in Tibet durchaus ungewöhnlich – Leichensektionen durchgeführt, um die tradierten Angaben mit eigenen Augen zu überprüfen. Vor allem im Bereich des Bewegungsapparates weichen seine Erkenntnisse von früheren Angaben ab. In meinem Projekt wurde das Kapitel zur Anatomie tabellarisch aufgeschlüsselt und die relevanten Daten mit den Angaben früherer und späterer Kommentare verglichen, die sich typischerweise auf die sogenannten "Vier Tantras" beziehen. So heißt der zentrale Lehrtext der tibetischen Medizin, dessen Entstehungszeit bisher nicht genau geklärt ist, der aber deutlich älter sein dürfte als diese Kommentare.

Europalia has already presented the rich culture of other BRIC countries in previous festivals: europalia.russia in 2005, europalia.china in 2009 and europalia.brasil in 2011. Europalia.india comes as a logical sequel. India has become an important player in today’s globalised world. Spontaneously India is associated with powerful economical driving force. The Indian economy is very attractive and witnesses an explosion of foreign investments. But India is also a great cultural power. The largest democracy in the world is a unique mosaic of peoples, languages, religions and ancient traditions; resulting from 5000 years of history. India is a land of contrasts. A young republic with a modern, liberal economy but also a land with an enormous historical wealth: the dazzling Taj Mahal, the maharajas, beautiful temples and palaces and countless stories to inspire our imagination.
