Album Of The Week: White Denim’s Stiff Austin, Texas, rock ‘n’ roll act White Denim have been doing something for the past few years that’s a bit of a rarity. When this band was just starting out, they had this crazy blues punk sound that was raw as a t-bone steak. Recently the band has gotten a tad more polished and adopted some psychedelic elements. What makes this a rarity is that over time White Denim has gotten better in an era where bands are never able to recapture the initial greatness they exhibited in their first few albums. This couldn’t be more evident than with their seventh studio album, Stiff, that was released on March 25. After the departure of drummer Josh Block and guitarist Austin Jenkins, who left to work on Leon Bridges’ stellar debut that came out last June, vocalist and guitarist James Petralli and bassist Steven Terebecki retooled the band with Jonathan Horne on guitar and Jeff Olson on drums. The new additions make for fresh music that’s abundant in Stiff. Following up 2013’s Corsicana Lemonade, White Denim’s new album has that similar psychedelic sheen, but it brings back the rawness of the band’s earlier material. Stiff is a pretty ironic name for an album that’s going to make you feel the exact opposite. White Denim brings the fuzz with their new album. There’s a classic rock feel to it that’s accessible and infectious. Show it to your old man and he’ll probably say, “That’s what the kids are listening to these days?” with a gleam in his eye. For a guide of what to have him listen to first, check out my top tracks from the Album Of The Week: “Holda You (I’m Psycho)” is rhythmically pristine and you can definitely tell why the band picked it to be the lead single. Petralli and Horne scorch the track with riffs; burning ears are a guarantee after listening to this. The fuzz is apparent in “Mirrored In Reverse;” it sounds like something Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy would have written. You’ll be hooked when Terebecki’s bass hits. There’s a little bit of funk and Motown going on in “Ha Ha Ha Ha (Yeah),” a mover and shaker. New England music fans can go see White Denim at The Sinclair in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 22, and they’re incredible live. WELCOME! Festivarians, music lovers, friends old and new... WELCOME to the 27th version of our annual get-together! This year, we can’t help but look back 50 years to the Summer of Love, the summer of 1967, a year that brought us the Monterey Pop Festival (with such performers as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead) which became an inspiration and template for future music festivals like the one you find yourself at right now. But the hippies of that era would likely refer to what’s going on in the political climate of these United States now as a “bad trip” with the old adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” coming back into play. Here we are in 2017 with so many of the rights and freedoms that were fought long and hard for over the past 50 years being challenged, reinterpreted or revoked seemingly at warp speed. It’s high time to embrace the two basic tenets of the counterculture movement. First is PEACE. PEACE for your fellow human, PEACE within and PEACE for our planet. The second tenet brings a song to mind - and while the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band gets all the attention on its 50th anniversary, it’s the final track on their Magical Mystery Tour album (which came out later the same year) that contains the most apropos song for these times. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. LOVE more, fear less. LOVE is always our answer. Come back to LOVE.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's influence (loud and sloppy garage-blues) was still felt throughout the country, as proven by the Immortal Lee County Killers in Alabama with The Essential Fuck-Up Blues (2001); the Black Keys in Ohio with The Big Come Up (2002); and by the Kills in Florida, playing the version popularized by the White Stripes on No Wow (2005). The Fiery Furnaces (4), formed by Matthew Friedberger and Eleanor Friedberger, siblings from Chicago who relocated to New York, exhibited a versatile and multi-faceted style on Gallowsbird's Bark (2003). Anti- crooning vocals and spiked guitar riffs as well as wildly unstable dynamics evoked the Rolling Stones at their most drunken/deranged, or Captain Beefheart's Magic Band fronted by Janis Joplin. At the same time the exuberant neglect of their arrangements was reminiscent of Pere Ubu. Blueberry Boat (2004) stretched out into longer and more ambitious songs, collages of genres and tours de force of arrangement (including electronic keyboards) that were meant to create a new form of musical theater. That form came to life on Rehearsing My Choir (2005), a work structured as a dialogue between an older woman and a younger one over a substratum of eccentric and cacophonous sounds.
