Necrophages • Often distinct succession. • Very useful for forensic entomology. • Most initial colonizers are Diptera. • Later are Coleoptera (e.g. Silphidae). • Dried are more Coleoptera (e.g. Dermestidae) • Final stages are tineid larvae (keratin) Fungivores • The true decomposers are fungi. • There is a whole guild of insects that specialize on these. 4 4/19/15 Aquatic Insects • Insecta (even Hexapoda) are plesiomorphically terrestrial. • But there have been numerous colonizations of the freshwater aquatic environment. • Far fewer colonizations of marine aquatic environment. Hemimetabolous Aquatic Insects • Some lineages have almost* exclusively aquatic naiads. – Ephemeroptera – Odonata* – Plecoptera (the only aquatic Polyneoptera) • All of these have terrestrial adults. -

Summary 1. Data from English Nature’s Invertebrate Site Register, SSSI citations and the English Nature Site Information System (ENSIS) were used to identify assemblages of invertebrates on SSSI for which invertebrate interest had been recognised in the citations or ENSIS. 2. Assemblages were defined using predominantly well recognised habitat terms. These terms were organised into a hierarchy of three levels. A total of 133 terms were used at the second and third levels, and the number of assemblages recognised exceeds this when the terms were used in combinations. The importance of assemblages was assessed as national / international, regional or county / local. 3. Of the 1028 sites investigated, 885 had sufficient data to allow at least one assemblage to be identified. The average number of assemblages per site was 3.1, ranging from 1 to 10. 4. Assemblages with a high representation in the results were those associated with grasslands, mature woodland, fen and marsh (the latter two mainly represented in features such as ponds and ditches). A few assemblages appeared to be particularly poorly represented, notably shingle and dune assemblages. -

Shifts in enemy pressure are particularly relevant for organisms that exhibit exponential growth during development, such as juvenile insects that increase their mass by several orders of magnitude. As one of the dominant groups of insect herbivores in most terrestrial plant communi- ties, larval lepidopterans (caterpillars) are host to a diverse array of parasitoids. Previous research has described how the frequency of herbivore parasitism varies among host plants or habitats, but much less is known about how parasitism pressure changes during host development. To test whether the two major parasitoid taxa, wasps and flies, differentially attack shared hosts based on host develop- mental stage, we simultaneously exposed early- and late-instar Euclea delphinii Boisduval (Lepido- ptera: Limacodidae) caterpillars to parasitism in the field. We found strong evidence that parasitoids partition hosts by size; adult female wasps preferentially parasitized small caterpillars, whereas adult female flies preferred to attack large caterpillars. Our results demonstrate that host ontogeny is a major determinant of parasitoid host selection. Documenting how shifts in enemy pressure vary with development is important to understanding both the population biology and evolutionary ecology of prey species and their enemies. -

Businesses can get advice on everything from improving efficiency and getting better use out of improved speeds to online marketing, new technologies, apps and software that will help them grow, develop and reach new markets. It’s not just about businesses however, communities can also benefit through gaining a better understanding of social media, accessing online public services as well as making the most of services such as iPlayer, live streaming, gaming and homeworking. The Cosmic Peninsular Consortium will now undertake a series of workshops and events that will follow the infrastructure roll out as it moves across Devon and Somerset, helping businesses and individuals access information and develop the skills to get the most from faster broadband speed. This edition was edited by Sally 01453 872729, email: [email protected] CHAIRMAN’S REPORT (or a tale of two meetings) The first meeting is our own AGM, which was held back in November. It was preceded by a short walk led by Peter and by the usual gorging of tea and homemade cakes provided by some of our excellent culinary experts. The meeting started with a minute’s silence giving us chance to reflect on the life of Denys Thompson who died earlier in the year. Continuing we received and adopted reports from the Chairman, Footpath Secretary and Treasurer before continuing to the election of officers, committee members and others taking on volunteering roles. Mike thanked Anne Eamer who was standing down as a Walks Collector after many years. Our meeting was addressed by Bernard Gill representing Area who mentioned in particular the slight fall in membership in the county, the need to report footpath problems and the Lost Ways project. Items of Other Business included a request by Bernard Smith for people to give lifts for members who do not have cars. It was agreed that we would consider the matter at our next Committee Meeting but meanwhile if anybody could help Bernard they were encouraged to come forward. Colin mentioned the BBC Countryfile’s report on the Great British Ramble and asked if we could consider raising money on our walks next year for Children in Need. -
