The essay’s successive chapters examine the lives and literary works of three understudied authors who held leadership positions in this critically unserious, fringe society: FES Symposiarch Alden Nowlan; the Society’s President Leo Ferrari; and its First Vice-President Gwendolyn MacEwen. Therefore, my project constitutes an act of recovery and reconstruction, bringing to light cultural work and literary connections that have largely faded from view. Chapters show how certain literary writings by Nowlan, Ferrari, or MacEwen directly or indirectly relate to their involvement with FES, making the Society an important part of their cultural work rather than a mere entertainment, distraction, or hoax. -

The Writers’ Union of Canada (1973) and Studies in Canadian Literature (1976) were motivated by a similar impulse. The 1970s financial crisis at McClelland and Stewart, then the major publisher of Canadian writing, threatened writers and readers alike and galvanized writers into forming a professional organization.1 As I recall, Desmond Pacey of the University of New Brunswick, a scholar, writer, and the established critic of Creative Writing in Canada: A Short History of English-Canadian Literature (1952), was one of the founding mem- bers of the Writers’ Union and, in the early 1970s, VP Academic at the university. -

STANLEY COOPERMAN is the author of a number of books of poetry — Cannibals (Oberon Press), The Day of the Parrot (University of Ne braska Press), Cappelbaum's Dance (Nebraska), and The Owl Behind the Door (McClelland & Stewart); and of World War I and the American Novel (Johns Hopkins), and many critical essays. He teaches at Simon Fraser University. CARL DENNIS, of the English Department of the State University of New York at Buffalo, has published poems in Salmagundi, The New Yorker, and elsewhere. His first book, A House of My Own, will be published this fall by George Braziller. JOHN DITSKY has published widely in both American and Canadian periodicals, including Prairie Schooner, The New York Times, and the Georgia Review. He is poetry editor of The University of Windsor Review, teaches English at the University of Windsor, and is completing a collection of poetry, Scar Tissue. Each period has the same integrity, the same skilful moderation that is aware of the continuity of its heritage and a recalcitrance of personality. This division of Canadian poetry does not mean the water- tight compartmentalization, rather, it is a continuous growth of Canadian poetry contributing to the cumulative identity that is Canadian. Canadian poetic culture is a growth having its first stirrings of poetics culture, emergence of a national poetic culture, transitional poetic culture, modernist poetic culture and post modernist or contemporary poetic culture. 1 1.2 Pre-Confederation Period The pre-Confederation period had the first stirrings of a poetic culture before Canada became a nation. -

The project incorporates archival and historical research to demon- strate the interartistic nature of modernist poetry in Canada between 1930 and 1960. By establishing that paintings, sculptures, and book designs and illustrations by Canadian artists who knew and worked closely with Canadian modernist poets informed and affirmed the content and aesthetics of the poetry, the dissertation argues for a consideration of the social dimension of literary modernism in Cana- da. -

During the past decade or so there has been an apparent change, and one's mail has tended to contain an unwonted proportion of journals of literature and the related arts, and to a less extent of affairs and social sciences. But this has been a nurtured growth, which would hardly have been possible if it had not been for (a) the willingness of the Canada Council to support such publications and (b) the appreciation by many of our new universities and colleges of the prestige that accrues from allowing literary or scholarly journals to appear under their auspices. I am concerned here not with the pros and cons of subsidized publication, though one cannot declare too often the need to regard with caution even the patronage one accepts, nor I am concerned with the larger question, which would need a whole issue of Canadian Literature to discuss adequately, of the dilution or distortion of quality that may come from excessive nurturing. I am interested rather in those magazines that have survived over decades without such institu- tional help. -

1 Welcome to th e 6th annual Galiano Literary Festival! Once again we are thrilled to welcome both returning and first-time participants to the Galiano Literary Festival. We hope you will agree that this year’s lineup of authors is our best yet. Many of our authors this year explore environmental issues but that’s just a part of the wide array of works our authors will be sharing with all of you. From swashbuckling action to historical novels to science fiction to poetry, non-fiction and biography with lots of stops along the way, this year’s writers cover all the bases in book topics. They also represent a wide range of backgrounds and experience from first-time authors to those with dozens of books to their credit. The readings and panels will, we believe, prove stimulating and enjoyable. However, the best parts of the Festival are those times when authors and readers meet together over a glass of wine or delicious meal in the homey and intimate environment of the Galiano Oceanfront Inn. It is our hope that you will leave the Festival having found some new books and authors to read and having connected and reconnected with other readers and writers who share your passion for books. We also hope that you will take the time to enjoy Galiano Island itself by sampling some of our fine eateries, visiting the many art and crafts galleries or, simply, taking a tranquil stroll along the beach or through the woods.
