The protest was a march against gender-based violence in South Africa and worldwide. Community members met at Rhodes University and in Fingo Village, marching into town to have their say about the violence they have experienced. Posters reading, ‘My Body, My Say’, and ‘My Body, Not Your Crime Scene’ flooded the crowds dressed in black and red. The protesters joined together in song and discussion as a way to empower and encourage one another to continue the fight against gender-based violence. After discussing the problems of researching western European music history in South Africa from the arrival of the Dutch in 1652, and briefly summarising that music history up to the first clarinet reference, the thesis goes through the existing clarinet references. These have been sourced from travellers’ journals, newspapers, military histories, other theses, etc., with particular emphasis on the 19th century, since the clarinet was introduced to South Africa near the beginning of it, and the most unknown part of the clarinet’s South African history is within it.

Surendran Reddy, Master of Clazz by Carla van der Merwe Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music Performance (50% Performance/ 50% Thesis) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University Supervisor: Dr. Hilde Roos December 2016 Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Declaration By submitting this thesis electronically, I declare that the entirety of the work contained therein is my own, original work, that I am the sole author thereof (save to extent explicitly otherwise stated), that reproduction and publication thereof by Stellenbosch University will not infringe any third party rights and that I have not previously in its entirety or on part submitted it for obtaining any qualification. Carla van der Merwe December 2016 Copyright © 2016 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved i Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract Surendran Reddy (1962 – 2010) was held in high esteem as a composer, classical and jazz pianist and was awarded many commissions during his life. He was specifically known for his unique composition style which he called ‘clazz’ – a fusion of classical (Western art music), jazz, mbaqanga, mbira and popular music. However, there is an absence of research documenting his life and music. This qualitative study is a first attempt at documenting the life and work of Reddy. The study consists of two parts: first a biographical chapter and the second chapter discusses his unique style ‘clazz’, with references to its origins, influences and a discussion of selected works. What will be shown is how is his life and exposure to the racialized society in Apartheid South Africa led to his self-proclaimed egalitarianism and humanism and how these views are channelled through his music.

  • Gender and Sexuality in South African Music
For many years now, the manner in which gender and sexuality impinge upon musical creativity has been a focus of mainstream debate in Europe and the USA. This book, based on the papers of a conference organized by the University of Pretoria, is nevertheless the first of its kind to tackle these issues in a specifically South African context. How is it, for example, that a white, gay composer could during apartheid write cantatas glorifying the same nationalist society that deemed him to be perverse? What role did gender play in the career of the premier Afrikaner woman composer of her day, whose success was matched only by the ridicule she inspired amongst her peers? And to what extent can gendered and sexualized hierarchies be discerned in African popular and indigenous music? These and many other questions are addressed, ranging from the straight and narrow to the queer and wide. The result is a book that is invigorating, even at times uncomfortable: a frank, scholarly, full-frontal portrait of a hitherto ignored, but vital area of South African music history. Gender and Sexuality in South African Music Edited by Chris Walton & Stephanus Muller This book is dedicated with gratitude to the staff of the Music Library of the University of Pretoria: Isobel Oosthuizen, Gertrud Meyer and Marie Stals Gender and Sexuality in South African Music Published by SUN ePReSS, a division of AFRICAN SUN MeDIA, Stellenbosch 7600 http://www.africansunmedia.co.za http://www.sun-e-shop.co.za All rights reserved.
