Honorary doctorates

The degree Doctor of Music (honoris causa) Abdullah Ibrahim

Abdullah Ibrahim (born 1934) is South Africa’s most distinguished jazz pianist and a world-respected master musician. Out of a blend of the secular and religious, the traditional and modern, he developed the distinctive style, harmonies and musical vocabulary that are inimitably his own.

He was at the forefront of playing bebop with a Cape Town flavour and was a key figure in defining South African jazz. His groundbreaking septet the Jazz Epistles, formed in 1959 (with saxophonist Kippie Moeketsi, trumpeter Hugh Masekela, trombonist Jonas Gwanga, bassist Johnny Gertze and drummer Makaya Ntshoko), recorded the first jazz album by South African musicians.

In 1967 he received a Rockefeller Foundation grant to attend the Juilliard School of Music. While in the USA he interacted with the leaders of modern jazz, including Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp. In 1974 he recorded “Mannenberg – Is where it’s happening”, which became an unofficial national anthem during the apartheid struggle.

Ibrahim has composed scores for film, including the award-winning soundtrack for Claire Denis’s Chocolat (1988), as well as for No Fear, No Die (1990) and Idrissa Ouedraogo’s Tilai (1990), and he was featured in the 2002 production Amandla: A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony.

For more than twenty five years he has extensively toured the world , and appeared at major concert halls, clubs and festivals giving sell-out performances as solo artist and collaborator. His collaborations with orchestras have resulted in acclaimed recordings, such as African Suite (1999, with the European Union Youth Orchestra) and the Munich Radio Philharmonic orchestra symphonic version, “African Symphony” (2001), which also featured the trio and the NDR Jazz Big Band.

His discography runs to well over a hundred album credits.

In addition to composing and performing, Abdullah Ibrahim has established the M7 music academy, offering courses in seven disciplines to educate young minds and bodies. In 2006, he spearheaded the historic creation (backed by the South African Ministry of Arts and Culture) of the Cape Town Jazz Orchestra, an eighteen-piece bigband, which is set to further strengthen the standing of South African music on the global stage.

19 The degree Doctor of Literature (honoris causa) Michael Scott Mfundisi Vundla

Mfundi Vundla (born 1946) is founder and chair of Morula Pictures. Over five decades he has created a legacy as a titan of the South African entertainment industry. His contributions run across the visual and performing arts landscape of South Africa, from film to television and theatre. His work across these media reflects his political consciousness and commitment to social change in South Africa.

He conceptualised the original story for, co-wrote and produced the feature film comedy Soweto Green (David Lister, 1995) starring John Kani and Sandra Prinsloo. Vundla co-produced the action-crime film How to Steal Two Million (Charlie Vundla, 2011), which won major accolades at the 2012 African Film Awards. He was executive producer of the award-winning international coproduction In My Country (John Boorman, 2004), which focused on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

Furthermore, he was a past chairman of the Independent Producers Organisation (IPO) and of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). It was during his time as NFVF chairperson that Tsotsi (Gavin Hood, 2006) won an Academy Award for Best International Film.

In television, he is best recognised as the creator and executive producer of the popular long-running SABC television soap opera Generations, later Generations: The Legacy, and the medical drama series Jozi H. He produced the multi-award-winning animated series Magic Cellar. In 2006 the SABC awarded him the Golden Plume award for his contribution to South African television.

The degee Doctor of Philosophy Emil Ernst Haarhoff

In his thesis, Embodied shifting to bridge actor-character dissonance, the promovendus proposed an embodied and multimodal pedagogical strategy for intimacy directing to navigate potentially performance- restricting dissonances that may negatively impact on acting responses. Limited documented pedagogical strategies to bridge dissonance exist. The study drew on the domains of performance studies, embodiment, neuro-linguistic programming, and multi-level neuro-processing to create the proposed pedagogical strategy. The study implemented the strategy in a series of workshops, rehearsals and a closed performance. An expert panel qualitatively assessed the efficacy of the pedagogical strategy during a closed performance. The actors' journals, the researchers' observations, and the panel's assessment were relationally analysed to draw conclusions about the efficacy of the strategy. The study's findings indicated that the actors navigated intimacy with increased control and nuance, thereby navigating dissonance. The research contributes to the domain of intimacy directing by offering a methodical, embodied and multimodal pedagogical strategy toward navigating actor-character dissonance in intimacy directing.

Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika

Maluphakanyisw’ uphondo lwayo,

Yizwa imithandazo yethu,

Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.

Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,

O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho,

O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,

Setjhaba sa South Afrika – South Afrika.

Uit die blou van onse hemel,

Uit die diepte van ons see,

Oor ons ewige gebergtes,

Waar die kranse antwoord gee,

Sounds the call to come together,

And united we shall stand,

Let us live and strive for freedom,
