"-% %&('),&+%*% Our Charity The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust provides a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), responding to patients who have suffered trauma or serious medical emergencies. We operate 24 hours a day, ensuring we can be there for the most critically ill and injured people in the region. When necessary, our medical crews can provide highly specialist care at the scene; they are able to anaesthetise, perform surgery and give blood transfusions to patients. Following treatment, they can airlift patients directly to the hospital that can best care for them going forward. Around half of the patients they treat are taken to regional major trauma centres, ensuring they can get the care they urgently need without delay. We operate two aircraft – one from our Marden base in daylight hours, and the other from our Redhill base 24 hours a day. This means that no matter where you are in Kent, Surrey or Sussex, you are never more than 20 minutes away from the life-saving care that only we can bring directly to your side. As a charity, we rely almost entirely on donations and fundraising, and without this kind support, we simply could not continue our life-saving work. Window Dressing Competition THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES! 2018 Celebrates of 100 Years of the RAF and so in support of this amazing achievement and for all those who dedicated their lives to this courageous service we are decorating our windows for the annual Le Marche Window Dressing Competition in their honour. In brief the RAF was formed on the 1st of April 1918 , when the Royal Flying Corps merged with Royal Naval Air Service towards the end of the first World War, and took the motto from the Latin ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’ meaning, ‘Through Adversity to the Stars’ Its iconic and frequently replicated symbol shows the encircled colours red, white and blue. To complement our theme we have chosen the Air Ambulance as the charity we will support with our fund raising for this year. For the judging of our Window Dressing Competition we have invited 2 local pilots who spent many hours and years high above soaring through the skies living out the motto and reaching for the stars; Helen Comyns “After leaving school and spending a year in Scotland I came home to Blackboys and decided to join the W.R.A.F, my sister had been a meteorologist during the war and was stationed at R.A.F Tangmere. She told me such wonderful stories of her experiences that I thought that’s the life for me! In September 1957 I went up to R.A.F Wilmslow in Cheshire for my basic training. I enjoyed it all so much and after Passing Out I was posted to R.A.F Netheravon for vigorous police training followed by four years at R.A.F Innsworth. Working for the security service was a real eye opener and being seconded to MI5 and sent wherever required was truly interesting particularly for a young lady. After coming out of the Air Force I knew I wanted to see more of the world. I decided to go to South Africa, stopping off en route in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe ); I loved it so much that I stayed. Wanting to get to know more of Africa I applied to become an air hostess with Central African Airways. This was marvellous, and in my spare time I joined the flying club at Mount Hamden where I learned to fly and got my ‘wings’ which enabled me to fly down with friends to Lorenco Marquez, Beira, Kenya and visit friends on farms deep inside the bush. It was a wonderful life and I can only thank the R.A.F for aspiring me to live such a life of travel and adventure.” Anne Cranfield “In 1970 my father, who was a farmer, bought a small aeroplane, knocked a hole in a hedge to make an airstrip, and to my mother’s horror brought it home. We all - apart from her - learnt to fly it. So began my flying career. I got my PPL at Shoreham and went on to instruct at Goodwood in order to build up the 700 hours necessary to get a commercial licence. Then it was air taxi work for two years, flying 6- seater twin- engined Aztec aircraft all around the UK and Northern Europe. But what I really wanted was to get onto the big jets. At last, in 1976 I was offered a job as a First Officer by British Caledonian Airways. I couldn’t believe my luck. I flew the BAC 1-11 (“the pocket rocket”) on short-haul routes, and then moved on to the DC10 which took me from Houston to the West, to Hong Kong to the East, to Buenos Aires to the South. Then marriage and two children brought me back onto the short haul and less time away from home. By the time I got my command, BCal had taken on a few more women pilots, so we often formed an all-female crew. One of the first officers I flew with, Barbara Harmer, went on to fly Concorde after the merger with British Airways. Eventually I decided to retire from flying, to spend more time with my children. I’d been incredibly lucky and still look back on those times with great happiness. “ With many thanks to our judges for their participation in our event, I hope they enjoy all the window displays in the week running up to the August Bank Holiday Monday, as well as the superb selection of market stalls on the day and I greatly hope their stories inspire new generations to strive for their highest dreams.
