    Makalu and Lhotse, the Last of Messner’s 8OOOers. Our expedition was composed of Reinhold Messner, Hans Kammerlander, Friedl Mutschlechner, Giuseppe Enzio, Fernando Bernascone, Wolfgang Tomaset, Denis Ducroz, Giuliano De Marchi, Sabine Stehle, Brigitte Oberhollenzer and me as leader. De Marchi and Enzio did not go on to Lhotse. We were flown to Tumlingtar on August 18 and on August 29 got to Base Camp at 5400 meters at the place called French Base Camp . On September 3 we placed Camp I at 6800 meters at the foot of the couloir that leads to the Makalu La. We followed the normal (French) route. On September 9, Camp II was set up on the col at 7400 meters and the next day Messner, Kammerlander and Mutschlechner established Camp III at 7800 meters. On September 11 they started for the summit, but Mutschlechner had kidney pains and all gave up at 8000 meters. The next week was stormy and snowy. On September 23 De Marchi and Ducroz left Camp III and nearly reached the summit, stopped 30 meters below it by an impossible cornice. The two had climbed the French route up to the shouder left of the summit. Very late, they reached their highest point and returned in the dark to Camp III. On the 24th the Pole Krzysztof Wielicki and the Swiss Marcel Rüedi, members of a Polish expedition, went to the summit. Wielicki got to the top between three and four P.M. and Rüedi much later. The next morning Wielicki descended, having waited all night in Camp III for Rüedi.

    Dhokos and Dauri: Tourism Related Firewood Use in the Makalu-Barun Area, Nepal Bodhi Himal Garrett Environmental Sciences Program, University of California at Berkeley Abstract Despite regulation efforts, tourist related resource consumption continues to be a problem in many parts of Nepal. Using recall-based surveys of 78 porters and 26 lodge proprietors, the current status of firewood use by porters in the Makalu-Barun National Park and Conservation Area is examined. This study finds that porter consumption of firewood continues. More wood was used in the conservation area than in the national park. This difference in wood use patterns leads to greater porter wood use in the part of the protected area where local inhabitants already face wood shortages. An average of 0.7 baris (21 kilograms) of firewood is used daily by a group of five porters for cooking and warmth. Two thirds of surveyed porters are local kitchen users and a total of 92% of respondents buy firewood from lodges. The prevalence of firewood sales and porter use of local kitchens for food preparation causes community members to have an economic interest in porters’ wood consumption. In the national park, firewood consumption decreased by 0.22 baris (7 kilograms) per night, and the number of porters using no fire at all increased by 55%. The direct enforcement of the firewood ban in the national park, and the local role in wood use in the conservation area, cause increased firewood use in the national park. While the role of porter shelters is inconclusive, blanket rentals are successful in reducing firewood use by one bari (30 kilograms) per group of five porters.

Member of the Faculty ________________________ Date ABSTRACT Climate Change, "Everestification", and the Future of Mountaineering on Annapurna I Jamie Hutchinson This study aims to research how climate change is affecting the Annapurna Conservation Area in the Western Region of Nepal. This region consists of two mountain districts, three hill districts, and encompasses the Annapurna massif. Temperature and Precipitation data was obtained from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Nepal, spanning thirty years (1988-2018). Monthly, Seasonal and Yearly data were aggregated and averaged for both datasets, and statistical analysis was completed using JMP and Excel. Results indicate overall warming in all districts by 1°C, with higher elevations being impacted more than lower. Precipitation tests show strong seasonal intensity in the summer months, sometimes predating monsoon season, with higher elevations receiving less snow than previously recorded. Additional focus was then turned to Annapurna I in order to analyze expedition data for the last thirty years (1989 – 2019). All 8,000-meter peaks within Nepal were studied for expedition size and experience in order to establish climbing trends that lead to "Everestification." Current trends show an increase in expedition size but a overall decrease in inexperienced climbers.

EVANS HIS expedition came into being very late in the day, after it had finally been decided that a Swiss team, and not a British one, was to attempt Everest in 1952. The British expedition was sent out with two objects, to select and train men for a later attempt on Everest, and to try out equipment, clothing, and oxygen gear. Cho Oyu was chosen following reports that there were on it two possible routes. During th~ 19 51 Everest reconnaissance, Shipton and Ward had seen Cho Oyu from the Menlung La, or thereabouts, and had concluded that there was a route to the mountain from the south. ' Soon after, Bourdillon and Murr~y had seen Cho Oyu from the Nangpa La, and formed a very favourable opinion of the route up its west face. Our party, finally selected at the end of January, consisted of Shipton as leader, Secord, Gregory, Bourdillon, Colledge, and myself, with three outstanding New Zealanders, Edward Hillary, George Lowe, and Earle Riddiford. Griffith Pugh came as physiologist. Bourdillon and his wife, Gregory, Colledge, Riddiford, and I sailed on the Canton, March 7th, while Shipton, Pugh, and Secord flew out later. The whole party finally assembled at Jainagar, in Bihar, on March 30th, and it was here that we first met Hillary and Lowe, who burst in one evening in a characteristically tempestuous manner, brandishing enormous ice-axes, the like of which few of us had seen before. It took us seventeen days to reach Namche Bazaar, and while the march in is crowded with personal memories, few of these are different from those shared and described by other Himalayan climbers.

    HIMALAYAN SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION, 1960- 61 343 HIMALAYAN SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION 1960- 61 (A Himalayan Winter, Rakpa Peak, Ama Dablam, Makalu) BY MICHAEL WARD HE Himalayan Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition led by Sir Edmund Hillary and sponsored by Field Enterprises Educa­ tional Corpn. had three main objects. First, a thorough inves­ tigation into the legend of the Abominable Snowman; second, an investigation of the long-term effects of high altitude on man and, third, the ascent of Makalu without the use of oxygen. During the winter, too, a programme in physical geography would be carried out, including glaciology, metereology, and solar radiation studies. The second and third stages of this expedition were complementary to one another, as a number of physiological observations were going to be made on the upper slopes of Makalu. It was hoped, too, that members of the wintering party would be so acclimatised that the ascent without oxygen would be not too big a burden. The quest for the Abominable Snowman was carried out in and around the Rolwaling Valley. The party consisted of: Sir Edmund Hillary; Dr. Larry Swan, an ecologist from Chicago; Martin Perkins, Zoo Director from Chicago; John Dienhart, also from Chicago; Dr. Tom N evison; Desmond Doig of the Statesman, Calcutta; George Lowe; Peter Mulgrew; Pat Barcham and Michael Gill. To the north of the Rolwaling Valley lies a group of mountains dominated by Men­ lungtse and Gaurisankar. It was in this region that Eric Shipton and I in I 9 5 I saw some footprints that could be attributed to the 'Yeti'. No evidence of the Yeti was found in the Rolwaling, although many legends and footprints were encountered.
