It is a hackneyedsaying, but it is clearthat we livein troubled times. As I write, the Coronavirus is spreadingaround the world, and many nations in Europeand beyond arefacing severe restrictions to a wayof lifethat we takefor granted. There are and willbe economicrepercussions: yesterday share prices tumbled and the priceof oil crashed. Some of uswill be gratefulfor cheaperfuel, but the instabilityof theworld economywill affect us all.

So it is easyto feelgloomy and worried about the future. We mayworry about our healthand that of relativesand friends; we maybe concernedwhether we willhave thefood and supplies we need. Some will be anxiousabout work and business in uncertaintimes. In thesecircumstances hope may appear to be in shortsupply.

Sowhat should we do?Certainly we shouldrook out for the vulnerable and ensure theyreceive what they need. We mayfind that we can'tbe as busyas we normally are;and so we mayhave the opportunityto enjoythe time and space that we may notalways have.

Alongsideallthese troubles we areapproaching the Easter season, which offers manyimages of newlife and hope. The Easter message is that God did something aboutour hurting world: he metthe forces of darknesson the crossas Jesusdied. And in the resurrectionof Jesusthere is the oromiseof newlife and new hope. No situationis completelyhopeless or desperatebecause Jesus rose again. "Because of the Lord'sgreat love we are not consumed, for his compassionsnever fail. They are new everymorning, great is your faithfulness"Lamentations 3.22-23

Tim Greenslade Pausefor -hought 'All in theApril Evening ...' ForJohn and me the soundtrack to Aprilis providedby the sheep and lambs in the field oppositeour house.Their range is extraordinary- everything from treble to bassoprofundo. l'msure a cleversound engineer could splice thenr into a choir. Thisyear lambs have been very much on my mincl. We were planning a tripto Ghent. One of thethings we hopedto seewas an altarpiecepainted by Hubertand Jan van Eyckin the 1Stn century. In the end the trip didn't happen (that's another story) but, like a diligentcultural tourist, I haddone my homework. In the courseof thatI hadlearned a newword: polyptych. lt means 'a painting, typically an altarpiece, consisting of morethan three leaves or panelsjoined by hingesor folds'. TheGhent altarpiece has no lessthan twelve panels, painted on bothsides. In the centreis the panelknown as the 'Adorationof the MysticLamb ' An altarstands in a landscapeof meadows andwoods, with the roofsand spires of a cityin the distance. The altar is surroundedby groups of figures:angels, saints and martyrs, pagan philosophers and Jewish prophets. On the altar standsthe Lamblt hasa woundon itsbreast from which blood pours into a goldenchalice. The Lambstares out at fromthe panelwith disconcertingly human eyes. ls thisthe NewJerusalem of Revelation, lit with celestial light? Are we lookingat 'thegreat multitudethat no mancould number' standing before the Lamband crying out in a loudvoice, 'Salvationbelongs to ourGod who is seatedon thethrone and to the Lamb'?That must surely bethe main inspiration, but behind that vision stands a wholeother'polyptych' of biblical references. Here is Johnthe Baptist, declaring 'Behold the Lambof Godwho takes away the sin of theworld.' Here are the lambsprescribed by Leviticusas offeringsin reparationfor sins. Hereare the Passoverlambs, whose blood, smeared on thedoorposts, averted the Angel of Deathas he slayedthe first born of Egypt. Here is the ramcaught in a thicket, the sacrifice providedin placeof Abraham'sson lsaac. Amongthe manyfigures on the Ghentaltarpiece are discreetly placed portraits of the merchant JoostV[dit andhis wife Lysabette, the donors of thatextraordinary work. Following their example,I am going to includea smallpicture of myselfin this'Pause'. The scene is Lyneham CountyPrimary School, circa 1960. I am standingin the choir, warbling out the song that comes backto me everyyear as I listento the pretty, silly:reatures gambolling beyond our hedge: All inthe April evening Aprilairs are abroad Thesheep with their little lambs Passedme by on the road Thesheep with their little lambs Passedme by on the road All inthe April evening I thoughton the Lamb of God.

A long, long time ago, on 6'nMarch, when peopleused to meet in pubs,Maiden Newton Runnersmet at the Foxand Houndsfor our annrraldinner and AGM. Normal practice is to get the AGM done in about10 minutes- it'sthe cnlything, running included, that we do quickly. But this yearwe had aboutan hourto fill beforeour scheduledmeal time so we took the opportunityto deliberateand digress, moving slowly and strayingoff routein the best MaidenNewton Runners tradition. The resultof the AGM was that the club officerswere all re-elected,we decidedwhich charities to suppor with moneyleft overfrom lastsummer's MaidenNewTen Madness race and we plannedsome clubevents for the coming year....most of whichprobably won't now happett. After a good dinnerwe movedon to the importanttask of votingfor and presentingthe club awards. After the voteshad been countedand independentlyverified (l lookedover the secretary'sshoulder and checkedit lookedabout right) the Achievementof the Year award was tied betweenthe FastestHairdresser in the Westand HelenAllen. Helen is fast by anyone'sstandards, let aloneMaiden Newton Runners. Despite repeated and seriousillness setbacksshe finishedon the podiumat the BritishMasters for boththe 800m and the 1500m.She alsobroke the 5 minutebarrier for the 1500m,which is an incredible achievementinvolving an averagespeed of 11.22mph.

Eventhe FastestHairdresser in the West can'tkeep up with Helenbut her achievements werejust as special. After a long injurylayoff she surprisedus all last Marchby completing the YeovilHalf-Marathon, though she did end up with a blisterthe sizeof a saucer(blisters are measuredin crockerysizes). In Aprilshe amazedus by completingthe London Marathon, proving herself right when she claimedthat all the standingup she doesfor work was good trainingfor beingon her feet for over l, hours.Since then she has gone from strengthto strength. As well as longdistance rac;es she has also been sharpeningher speed, winning her age categoryfor the Street5K WinterSeries. Other prizeson the nightincluded the Club Championship(won by KirstyEveleigh) and the C**p Selfieof the Year (won by Tony Rimmerfor a picturefeaturing the top of his headwith the assembledMaiden NewTen Madness runners behind him). We then cameto the most prestigioustrophy, the GoldenWellie, which is the PR Awardfor bringingthe club into disrepute. There were some strongcontenders ir this categorybut the clearwinners were the perpetratorsof the greatChilfrome marmalade heist. Some readersmay recallthis notoriousincident when a car full of MaidenNewton Runners screeched to a haltoutside ChilfromeChurch on the way backfrom a Sundayrun up Aunt Mary'sBottom. With Steve Hillsand the FastestHairdresser on lookoutduties and MrsWebb as getawaydriver, your correspondentsped intothe church, liberated a ;ar of Sevilleand WhiskyMarmalade for my post-runtoast and madeoff (l did go back laterwith the money).

Some readershave beenasking after my co-columnistMr Les Knott-Botherduring these troubledtimes. I can reassureeveryone that he ras been practisingself-isolation and social distancingfor years- he rarelyleaves the houseand when he does no one wantsto get within2 metresof him. His only grumbleis the adviceof the ChiefMedical Officer that runningoutside is stilla goodthing to do. I have run out of spaceto documentsome recentclub activities, such as our firstoverseas club outingto Barcelona,so I will returnto this nexttime. In the meantimeI hope all readers staywell, can take some outdoorexercise and stillenjoy our beautifulWestDorset countryside. David Webb \ I i \I \ I \ r\

An essentialguide to helppeople take steps to protectthemselves from cyber and identitycrime is releasedthis month from the BritishComputer Society.

Theguide has been co-written and edited bv AndyTaylor, a volunteerDigital Championwith Dorset Council who also works full time as an independent informationsecurity adviser, following a careerin the RoyalNavy.

Andyis basedat SherborneLibrary on a voluntarybasis, providing free support and adviceto anyoneneeding help with basic digital skills. He is oneof 75 Digital Championsvolunteering in Dorset libraries to helppeople with computers, tablets, phonesand more. Most have gained experience from their professional careers.

As Andyexplains in hisnew book, information security fraud has evolved more rapidlythan any other crime with the onset of computersand the digital world. Says Andy,"We mitigate against crime and injury everyday by followingset rulesand best practice. As an analogy,we drivevehicles and take a lotof riskgoing from A to B but we followthe rulesof the roadto staysafe. We can'ttake the risksaway, but we knowwhere they are and take steps to avoirlinjury. The same applies to information security.Paying by debitcard on a reputablewebsite, carries a risk, but it is very smallso we takeit. The risks increase signiticantly though when connecting to an insecureWi-Fiwhere the credentials are un,llear."

Takesteps to protectyourself against cyber and informationcrime Considerusing Paypal, it is verysecrrre - https.l/www.pavpal.com/uUhome Neverput any financial information including banking or creditcard details in an email,it is notsecure.

. Be quickto installthe latestversions (patches) in software.Criminals look for theweaknesses in theold versions to exploit.

o Alwaysuse websites with https:\\ the 's' actuallystands for securityand will generatea padlock, make sure it is notcrossed out. lf thewebsite does not havethe's', do notshop there.

o Protectyour documents. Always shred all discardeddocuments that contain personalinformation (including name and addresses) and recycle using a trustworthydocument destruction company. An advantagethat identity and cybercriminals have on their side is the time to siftthrough and pull together informationfrom eveqrwhere.

To gethelp from a DigitalChampion simply call 01305 221048 and we willmatch youwith a friendlyvolunteer in yourown area who will help you feel right at homein thedigitalworld.
