A Benefice Service of Holy Communion for the Feast of St Peter & St Paul A Benefice Service of Holy Communion For the Feast of St Peter & St Paul Fourth Sunday after Trinity Sunday 27th June 2021 Aldeburgh Parish Church President and Preacher: The Ven Jeanette Gosney Archdeacon of Suffolk Welcome Today is a multi-layered celebration. It is Aldeburgh’s Patronal Festival, and our readings speak of Patron Saints Peter and Paul. But it is a much more personal celebration too. Last year The Revd Johanna Mabey reached the end of her time as an Assistant Curate in training. At the same time The Revd James Marston was ordained Priest in our cathedral. In both cases we were not able to celebrate with them because of the Covid 19-related restrictions but today we can. We welcome our Archdeacon, The Ven. Jeanette Gosney, who will license Jo as an Assistant Priest in our benefice as well as presiding and preaching at our Patronal Festival service. And she will be assisted, in the role of Liturgical Deacon, by James. We thank Jo and James for all that they have already done for us and pray for their future ministry among us. We are very lucky to be able to share the ministry of Christ’s church with them. As long as the weather smiles on us please do stay and have some refreshments with us after the service – and hopefully we will be able to raise a glass to Jo, James and all that is to come. ¶ The Gathering In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen. The Greeting The president greets the people The Lord be with you All and also with you. Prayer of Preparation All Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen Prayers of Penitence Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. All Amen. Lord, have mercy. Jesus said to his apostles, ‘You are my friends if you obey my commands.’ Let us now confess our disobedience to him. All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. All Lord, have mercy. The president says Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen The Collect Let us pray. Almighty God, whose blessed apostles Peter and Paul glorified you in their death as in their life: grant that your Church, inspired by their teaching and example, and made one by your Spirit, may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen. ¶ The Liturgy of the Word Readings Either one or two readings from Scripture precede the Gospel reading At the end of each the reader may say For the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. Gospel Reading When the Gospel is announced the reader says Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. All Glory to you, O Lord. At the end This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon The Licensing The Incumbent presents The Revd Johanna Mabey to the Archdeacon of Suffolk The Incumbent: I present The Revd Johanna Mabey to be licensed as Assistant Curate (to be known as Assistant Priest) Archdeacon: Johanna, do you believe that you are called by God and his church to accept this work? Johanna: I do. Johanna turns to face the congregation The People’s Commitment Archdeacon: The ministry of the Church is shared by all of God's people, exercising their particular gifts. Scripture calls each of us to use our gifts to build up the body of Christ in love. Johanna has accepted the call to serve and minister with you, so I now ask you, the people of God in this benefice, to commit to supporting her. The Archdeacon addresses the Ministry Team Archdeacon: You have been called to minister together here with Johanna. Will you care for her and for each other and minister with faith and joy, so that the Kingdom of God may be made known? Ministers: With the help of God, we will. The Archdeacon addresses the churchwardens Churchwardens, will you, as officers of the Bishop, and on behalf of the people of God in this benefice, care for Johanna and support her in all those duties which she undertakes as a priest in this benefice? The Churchwardens: With the help of God, we will. The Archdeacon addresses all present Archdeacon: People of God, will you uphold and encourage Johanna in her work and ministry? All : With the help of God, we will Archdeacon: Will you continually pray for Johanna? All : With the help of God, we will Archdeacon: Johanna, both you and the people of this parish have declared your willingness to work together in building up the body of Christ. Therefore, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Head of the Church, I, Jeanette, Archdeacon of Suffolk, am here to license you as Assistant Curate, to be known as Assistant Priest, of the benefice of Alde Sandlings Before I do so, it is necessary for the Declaration of Assent to be made and the Oaths of Allegiance and Canonical obedience to be taken. Johanna stands before the Archdeacon and the Declaration and Oaths are made and taken. THE OATHS Archdeacon: The Church of England is part of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the Catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty Nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons. Johanna in the declaration you are about to make will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care? DECLARATION OF ASSENT (Facing the Archdeacon) I, Johanna do so affirm and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the Catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness: and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon. THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE TO HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN (Facing the People) I, Johanna do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her Heirs and Successors according to law, so help me God. THE OATH OF CANONICAL OBEDIENCE (Facing the Archdeacon) I, Johanna, do swear by Almighty God that I will pay true and canonical obedience to the Lord Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich and his successors in all things lawful and honest, so help me God. Having made these declarations, Johanna may now be licensed to this Benefice. Let us pray in silence that God will bless her ministry here. The Archdeacon reads the License and hands it to Johanna saying: Receive your Licence; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Archdeacon then blesses Johanna God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be with you always.
