  • Archeacon of Gibraltar and Archdeacon of Italy and Malta
The Bishop in Europe: The Right Reverend Dr. Robert Innes The Suffragan Bishop in Europe: The Right Reverend David Hamid ARCHEACON OF GIBRALTAR AND ARCHDEACON OF ITALY AND MALTA Statement from the Bishops The Diocese in Europe is the 42nd Diocese of the Church of England. We are by far the biggest in terms of land area, as we range across over 42 countries in a territory approximately matching that covered by the Council of Europe, as well as Morocco. We currently attract unprecedented interest within the Church of England, as we are that part of the Church that specifically maintains links with continental Europe at a time of political uncertainty between the UK and the rest of Europe. Along with that, we have been in the fortunate position of being able to recruit some very high calibre lay and ordained staff. To help oversee our vast territory we have two bishops, the Diocesan Bishop Robert Innes who is based in Brussels, and the Suffragan Bishop David Hamid who is based in London. We have a diocesan office within Church House Westminster. We maintain strong connections with staff in the National Church Institutions. Importantly, and unlike English dioceses, our chaplaincies pay for their own clergy, and the diocese has relatively few support staff. Each appointment matters greatly to us. The diocesan strategy was formulated and approved over the course of 2015. We are emphasising our commitment to building up congregational life, our part in the re- evangelisation of the continent; our commitment to reconciliation at every level; and our particular role in serving the poor, the marginalised and the migrant.

  • Diocese in Europe Prayer Diary, July to December 2011
DIOCESE IN EUROPE PRAYER DIARY, JULY TO DECEMBER 2011 This calendar has been compiled to help us to pray together for one another and for our common concerns. Each chaplaincy, with the communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a year, according to the following pattern: Eastern Archdeaconry - January, February Archdeaconry of France - March, April Archdeaconry of Gibraltar - May, June Diocesan Staff - July Italy & Malta Archdeaconry - July Archdeaconry of North West Europe - August, September Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe Nordic and Baltic Deanery - September, October Germany - November Swiss Archdeaconry - November, December Each Archdeaconry, with its Archdeacon, is remembered on a Sunday. On the other Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect all of us (e.g. reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or which have local applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals). Some chaplains might like to include prayers for the other chaplaincies in their deanery. We also include the Anglican Cycle of Prayer (daily, www.aco.org), the World Council of Churches prayer cycle (weekly, www.oikoumene.org, prayer resources on site), the Porvoo Cycle (weekly, www.porvoochurches.org), and festivals and commemorations from the Common Worship Lectionary (www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/texts.aspx). Sundays and Festivals, printed in bold type, have special readings in the Common Worship Lectionary. Lesser Festivals, printed in normal type, have collects in the Common Worship Lectionary. Commemorations, printed in italics, may have collects in Exciting Holiness, and additional, non- biblical, readings for all of these may be found in Celebrating the Saints (both SCM-Canterbury Press).

  • Porvoo Prayer Diary 2021
PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year. For corrections and updates, please contact Ecumenical Officer, Maria Bergstrand, Ms., Stockholm Diocese, Church of Sweden, E-mail: [email protected] JANUARY 3/1 Church of England: Diocese of London, Bishop Sarah Mullally, Bishop Graham Tomlin, Bishop Pete Broadbent, Bishop Rob Wickham, Bishop Jonathan Baker, Bishop Ric Thorpe, Bishop Joanne Grenfell. • COVID-19 Advice on Ordinations
COVID-19 Advice on Ordinations Issue Date Version Issued by 9th June 2020 1 The House of Bishops Recovery Group The Recovery Group has been set up to support the Church of England as government guidance changes through the COVID-19 pandemic. This document has been prepared with information available by the issue date and is for planning purposes only until present restrictions are lifted. It will be kept under review and updated as the situation develops, with each update issued as a new version. The current version will always be available to download from the Church of England website via the Coronavirus FAQs page. Choosing dates for ordinations in 2020 1. Ordinations are understood to be intentionally public occasions, even if tickets are used to control numbers in modern times. They should therefore take place only when public worship in churches and cathedrals is permitted and when and where it is safe for them to take place. 2. Recent practice in the Church of England is for most ordinations to be scheduled for Petertide or Michaelmas, although those are only two of the options envisaged by Canon C 3. Any Sunday, holy day, or Ember Day will suffice.1 It is envisaged that, in 2020, public worship may resume from 4 July at the earliest (the feast of Peter and Paul being on 29 June). Given that this is not a certain date, and the Government may need to delay the start of “Stage 3” of the relaxation of the lockdown arrangements, and sufficient time is needed to ensure the ordination services are appropriately planned, Michaelmas seems the earliest practical date, with All Saints the most sensible alternative.

  • Our Bishops' Lent Challenge This Year Raises Awareness of Environmental
Our Bishops’ Lent Challenge this year raises awareness of environmental issues. Few of us can be unaware of the critical and urgent environmental challenges facing the world. Christians are rediscovering that caring for the creation God brought into being, and which God loves, is a vital part of our mission, as well as being an issue of justice. Our programme for Lent 2020 offers a range of opportunities to engage with this challenge: on your own, with others, listening to sermons and addresses, attending presentations, reading a Lent book, sharing in a Home Group, or giving up something for Lent and supporting a charity. The Church of England’s national Lent campaign is available in various formats: social media, an app, daily emails and booklets. Search for #LiveLent: Care for God’s Creation Lent Sunday Sermons and Meet the Preacher Following the 10.00 am Sunday Service you are welcome to discuss the sermon with the preacher over coffee or tea. • Festal Eucharist
St Edmundsbury Cathedral Festal Eucharist President: The Right Revd Dr Mike Harrison Bishop of Dunwich Preacher: The Very Reverend Joe Hawes Dean of St Edmundsbury 25 December 2020 Christmas Day 10.30 am Welcome to St Edmundsbury Cathedral We celebrate today the wonderful mystery of God’s coming among us, fully human - as Emmanuel, ‘God with us’ - born of Mary. The celebration of Christ’s birth at Christmas is one of the two pillars of the Christian faith, and our Christmas services help us to recall, amid all the joyful customs and celebrations of Christmas, this central truth of the Word made flesh. The festival of the incarnation has been celebrated in the church since the third century. The Christmas crib and the nativity play can both be said to have originated from the tableau of Christ’s birth that St Francis of Assisi arranged when he celebrated Christmas at Grecchio in 1223. The Christmas season is often thought to be just a period of twelve days, ending with the Epiphany. The church nowadays, however, keeps a much earlier tradition in which the season lasts for a full forty days, ending with Candlemas, the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, in February. May Christmas bring to you, and all who you love, joy and peace as you ponder the mystery of Christ in our midst. The musical setting for today’s service is Missa Santi Nicolai by Franz Joseph Haydn, 1732-1809 Front cover illustration: The Nativity 2008 - abstract art by Will Humes, Lutheran Pastor. Members of the public are not permitted to take photographs or video recordings during services and events.
