Dorr (1853 -1 944) we re movi ng independ entl y in th e ame direction, ali gned with other summer and perm anent Hancock Co un ty re ident , towa rd improvi ng the qu ali ty of li fe on Moun t Desert Island (M DI ). In the la t ix yea rs of Dr. Abbe's li fe, Dorr and Abbe wo ul d share the pa th that led to a glade bes ide th e Springhouse at Sieur de Monts in Lafayette Nati onal Park. At thi s ite a museum of native America n artifacts was bein g erected that wo uld bea r Dr. Abbe' name. Unfo rtLmately, he would not witness its dedi ca ti on nor oversee its early development. In 2003 th e Abbe Museum celebrated its 75th anni ver ary; the same year marked th e I 50th ann iversa ry of Mr. Dorr 's birth.1 The intersecti on of th e interests of Dorr and Ab be, the exercise of their di stincti ve areas of experti se, and th eir shared va lue wou ld prove to be very important fo r th e developm ent of the ls land. -
History of the Bar Harbor Water Company: 1873-2004
HISTORY OF THE BAR HARBOR WATER COMPANY 1873-2004 By Peter Morrison Crane & Morrison Archaeology, in association with the Abbe Museum Prepared for the National Park Service November, 2005 Frontispiece ABSTRACT In 1997, the Bar Harbor Water Company’s oldest major supply pipe froze and cracked. This pipe, the iron 12" diameter Duck Brook line was originally installed in 1884. Acadia National Park owns the land over which the pipe passes, and the company’s owner, the Town of Bar Harbor, wishes to hand over ownership of this pipe to the Park. Before this could occur, the Maine Department of Environmental Testing performed testing of the soil surrounding the pipe and found elevated lead levels attributable to leaching from the pipe’s lead joints. The Park decided that it would not accept responsibility for the pipe until the lead problem had been corrected. Because the pipe lies on Federally owned land, the Park requested a study to determine if the proposed lead abatement would affect any National Register of Historic Places eligible properties. Specifically, the Park wished to know if the Water System itself could qualify for such a listing. This request was made pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The research will also assist the Park in meeting obligations under Section 110 of the same act. Intensive historical research detailed the development of the Bar Harbor Water Company from its inception in the wake of typhoid and scarlatina outbreaks in 1873 to the present. The water system has played a key role in the growth and success of Bar Harbor as a destination for the east coast’s wealthy elite, tourists, and as a center for biological research. -

The CLI is an evaluated inventory of all landscapes having historical significance that are listed on or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, or are otherwise managed as cultural resources through a public planning process and in which the NPS has or plans to acquire any legal interest. The CLI identifies and documents each landscape’s location, size, physical development, condition, landscape characteristics, character-defining features, as well as other valuable information useful to park management. Cultural landscapes become approved CLIs when concurrence with the findings is obtained from the park superintendent and all required data fields are entered into a national database. In addition, for landscapes that are not currently listed on the National Register and/or do not have adequate documentation, concurrence is required from the State Historic Preservation Officer or the Keeper of the National Register. The CLI, like the List of Classified Structures, assists the NPS in its efforts to fulfill the identification and management requirements associated with Section 110(a) of the National Historic Preservation Act, National Park Service Management Policies (2006), and Director’s Order #28: Cultural Resource Management. -

Greene (project Director) INTRODUCTION This 2-year project began in September 1989; its priorities were to: 1) evaluate historical resource inventory efforts in Acadia National Park since the 1880's and to assess the feasibility and appropriateness of including those data in a resource inventory program; 2) identify data appropriate for addition to the Park's Geographical Information System; and 3) identify gaps in resource base information and suggest priorities and procedures for future inventorying and monitoring.
