Within the famous fountain is the wistful figure of Lake Ontario. She sits apart from her sister lakes, gazing into the distance with arms outstretched. But what does she have to say for herself? Write a Monologue! Monologos means “speaking alone” in Greek, but we all know that people who speak without thinking about their listener can be very dull indeed. Your challenge is to find a ‘voice’ for your statue and to write an engaging monologue in 350 words. Get under your statue’s skin! Look closely and develop a sense of empathy with the sculpture and imagine how it would feel. How does Lake Ontario feel about her sister lakes? Invite your listener to feel with you: create shifts in tempo and emotion, use different tenses, figures of speech and anecdotes, sensory details and even sound effects. Finding your sculpture’s voice? Write in the first person and adopt the persona of your character: What kind of vocabulary will you use - your own or that of another era/dialect? Your words will be spoken so read them aloud: use their rhythm and your sentence structure to convey emotion and urgency. Read great monologues for inspiration, for example Hamlet’s Alas Poor Yorick, or watch film monologues, like Morgan Freeman’s in The Shawshank Redemption. How will you keep people listening? July 2018 State of the Wetlands in the Lake Simcoe Watershed Ontario Streams Technical Report No. 2018-01 Alexander Kissel, Habitat Technician & Alice Choi, GIS Technician, Ontario Streams ontariostreams.ca Summary Wetlands in the Lake Simcoe Watershed are critical to the health of the Lake and its surrounding ecosystem. They cover 18.4% of the surface area around the Lake or 52 847 hectares (ha). About 62.4% of these wetlands have been evaluated using the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) Southern Manual. The distribution of wetlands vary with fewer and smaller wetlands on the Oak Ridges Moraine (7.1% of surface area), the Schomberg Clay Plains (5.5%) and the uplands west of the the Lake (10.9 to 12.7%), contrasting with the larger valley and shoreline wetlands in the lowlands around the Lake (25.7%). Small wetlands play an important role particularly in the landscapes where they make up a large portion of the wetlands. A high resolution (15 centimetre pixel) analysis of aerial imagery from 1999/2002 to 2013/2016 for the Lake Simcoe Watershed has shown that many small wetland losses, and the occasional larger ones, add up over this time period to a loss of almost eight square kilometres or 773 ha (1.5% of the total wetland area). This loss is higher than previous estimates using lower resolution (30-metre pixel) satellite imagery which cannot pick out the smaller losses that have a large cumulative impact. The highest losses have been from agriculture (46.4% of all losses), following in descending order by residential (10.5%), peat extraction (10.4%), canals (9.6%), highways/roads (6.6%), industrial/commercial (5.7%), fill (4.6%), dug-out ponds (4.3%), recreation (1.6%) and aggregates (0.3%). -

Indigenous artist Robert Houle has created artworks that narrate Indigenous stories of place using the memories and wisdom of Indigenous people in areas of art, archaeology, and geography (land). is visual map is grounded in the premise that the history of the land is embodied in Indigenous knowledge of concealed geographies and oral histories. It relies upon concepts of Native space and place to demonstrate the signicance of the embodied knowledges of Indigenous people and highlights the importance of reading the land as a valuable archive of memory and history. Our First Nations Neighbours Peter Jones - c1845 According to several accounts, the first European to travel through Rice Lake was Samuel de Champlain about 1615. But... Artifacts from a 1974 archaeological dig on Rice Lake’s Sugar Island are on display in the Alderville Community Centre. They point to the existence of human settlement in this area about 1000-1500 years ago, or during the Middle Woodland Period. While all Canadians can join in the celebration of 150 years since four provinces formed the Dominion of Canada, First Nations can look back over a much longer history on these lands. The current residents of Alderville First Nation, on the south shore of Rice Lake, have a rich heritage. Wars between the various native tribes in southern Ontario and the northern American states, wars between the French and the English, changing alliances between all four, and various treaties were the story of the 1600s, 1700s and early 1800s. They all set the stage for the more recent story of our native community. At the time of the American Revolution (1775) people of the Mississauga nation were living in this area. As settlers continued to pour in from the United States, the Mississauga’s traditional semi-nomadic way of life was increasingly under threat. The landscape was changing, and the Mississauga were gradually pushed from their traditional hunting grounds. “The establishment of farms and additional settlements in the decades to follow disrupted the Mississauga’s fishing and hunting... Many Indians were hungry for new religious guidance, since their old religion seemed incapable of protecting them.” “I cannot suppose for a moment that the Supreme Disposer has decreed that the doom of Donald Smith, Sacred Feathers the red man is to fall and gradually disappear, like the mighty wilderness, before the axe of the European settler” – Peter Jones. -

Stacey LaForme Graphics by Shelda Martin After several years of consultation, the logo of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation was accepted in 1993. The Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation is a part of the Mississauga (Anishinabe language) Nation. The symbols on the logo are representative of five important aspects of our Nation’s history: Dancers at New Credit’s Three Fires 2014 Pow Wow (left to right)Daniel Secord, Catherine Shawana-Sherry, Scott Norton, Madison Macdonald, Lucus Shawana, Eagle Shannon Bomberry, Waskwaabiish Jonathan The Eagle is used because it is the predominant totem of Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. The Eagle is viewed as the messenger—the Mississaugas were once considered to be great messengers, some days, traveling up to 130 kilometers on foot. ORIGINS The story of the people of New Credit begins not in Southern Ontario where the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation is currently Three Fires located, but rather begins in the area around Georgian Bay and the northern shore of Lake Superior. The First Nations’ people living in The three fires is symbolic of the Mississaugas traditional and political alliance with the Ojibway, Odawa, and Pottawatomi that area were members of the Algonquian linguistic group and have been known historically as the Ojibwa or the Chippewa.
