Documented first by Ptolemy in Antiquity as Napoca, Cluj was a prosperous medieval city, with a strong trade and manufacturing activity, where arts were not missing. Today, the beauty of the architecture of the city, its artistic and spiritual life, the old spirit and the modern achievements keep on inviting visitors to walk through it. Baia Mare Baia Mare finds its fame and recognition as a medieval city with a prosperous mining industry whose traces can be still seen today. At the end of the 19th century, Baia Mare was the place where the Colony of the Artists was set up. The painters joining the school of art in this city are renowned for the naturalism of the “plein air” paintings and for the influence upon the Romanian and Hungarian art. Today, the city attracts visitors for its own beauty and history and it is a starting point for exploring the authentic Maramures folklore.

IJASOS- International E-Journal of Advances in Social Sciences, Vol. IV, Issue 10, April 2018 A DEEP DIVE INTO THE CHRONIC AIR POLLUTION REALITY IN BAIA MARE. PART III: AIR POLLUTION EFFECTS ON THE LOCAL POPULATION BETWEEN 1980 AND 2006 Valentina-Mariana Manoiu1*, Adrian Tiscovschi2, Alexandru-Ioan Craciun3 1 Assoc. Prof. Dr., Faculty of Geography, University of Bucharest, ROMANIA, [email protected] 2 Assoc. Prof. Dr., Faculty of Geography, University of Bucharest, ROMANIA, [email protected] 3 Environmental Expert, PRO BIODIVERSITAS, ROMANIA, [email protected] *Corresponding author Abstract Baia Mare, with its long-lasting mining and metallurgical tradition, is one of the country’s most problematic cities in terms of historical pollution and resulting consequences. This paper is the final chapter of a complex three-part work and aims to present a series of air pollution effects on public health in Baia Mare between 1980 and 2006. The first part focused on an overall view of historical air pollution sources in Baia Mare. The second part presented the evolution of air quality in Baia Mare and highlighted the chronic air pollution, consisting of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ammonia, particulate matter, and heavy metals between 1995 and 2006. The historical environmental (including air) pollution in Baia Mare had 3 main sources: National Company of Precious and Nonferrous Metals (NCPNM) - Remin Corporation; Cuprom Corporation; Romplumb Corporation. The three companies were active for decades and, until the early 2000s, environmental protection was not a priority of their technological process management. After the year 2000, investments in ecological technologies were undersized, and the 2008 economic crisis affected the companies’ activity.

  • Considerations on the Acid Mine Drainage Discharges in Natural Receptors, from the Baia-Mare Former Mining Area
STUDIA UBB AMBIENTUM, LIX, 1-2, 2014, pp. 87-95 (RECOMMENDED CITATION) CONSIDERATIONS ON THE ACID MINE DRAINAGE DISCHARGES IN NATURAL RECEPTORS, FROM THE BAIA-MARE FORMER MINING AREA Corina Ioana NEAMȚU1*, Elena Maria PICĂ1 1 Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Faculty of Engineering Materials and Environment, 103-105 Muncii Boulevard, Cluj-Napoca, Romania * Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT. After more than a decade from the cessation of mining activity throughout Romania, acid mine drainage management has remained topical. The high content of heavy metals in mine water threatens the quality of surface water and groundwater, and thus the soil. Therefore, it is important to find suitable solutions to control the discharge of this water into the natural receptors, so that the environment is minimum damaged. This paper presents the situation of five mines in Baia-Mare area, Maramureș County (Câmpurele, Tyuzoșa, Ilba Handal – near Băița village, the gallery in the central area of Cavnic and Reiner gallery from the same town) as it is in 2013, both in terms of water treatment applied methods after the evacuation from the mine galleries, and the parameters values of water samples from these five mines. Key words: acid mine drainage, heavy metals, pollution, pH, electric conductivity INTRODUCTION The mining activities impact on the environment occurs in all phases of the production processes, beginning with the prospection of the ore deposit and intensifying with their exploitation phase (Fodor, 2006). Depending on the particularities of the area - the type of the ore deposit exploited, the topography, the soil type in the area, the area surface explored or the method of the ore extraction, the negative effects may occur over a long period of time, even after the stoppage of the mine work in the area.
