Warren Hicks story Birdwood mill

W.R.Hicks 23 Clark Road Ivanhoe Victoria 29 July 1988 Dear Leslie Quite some time ago, you sent me a photo of myself on Bix X near Quorn. During the 25th anniversary run, I undertook to send you an article about Jack Kaines, for possible publica- tion in “Smoke Signal”. Here it is. I am sorry for the delay. I’ve written and re written it, and even now I am not quite satisfied with it, though I cant put my finger on the reason. Would you please pass this to the new editor of ‘Smoke Signal” for his consideration. Hope to see you at the B to B. I’ve entered a 1934 Diamond-Villers 147cc, belt drive. With regards. Sincerely

Warren Hicks.

The last of the Proctors, by Warren Hicks - 29/7/88.

Without the Birdwood Mill museum, there would be no Bay to Birdwood run. Without Jack Kaines there would be no Birdwood Mill museum.

It is probably realized that the events resulting in PFaum’s Flour mill at Birdwood becoming a motor museum began in Melbourne some ninety years ago.

John Arthur Proctor Kaines was born in Adelaide. His parents were sufficiently wealthy to be able to send him to England for completion of his schooling.

There, he had his first motorcycle ride on a Neracar loaned him by his tutor. His interest in motorcycles re- mained for the rest of his lifetime.

Almost 25 years ago, I received an excited letter from Jack. He and his silent partner had brought the old flour mill at Birdwood, together with the adjacent land abutting the River Torrens. There, he intended to dis- play his personal collection of motorcycles, cars and other interesting mementos of the past.

He had been promised numerous exhibits on loan. As well, he hoped to obtain use of the recently abandoned Birdwood to Springton railway together with an RX locomotive and carriages so that the steam trains could run as an adjunct to the museum.

This later project never came to pass.

The museum collection grew, the silent partner was replaced by active partner Len Vigar of Eden Valley, and a machine restoration effort headed by former speedway rider Harry Butler aided by local enthusiast got underway.

The museum became a mecca of veteran and vintage motoring. Jack and his wife Nell were the welcoming hosts.

After years of effort, the elderly owners felt the need for a break. Extra financial capital was needed, so the museum, land, exhibits and goods will were sold a syndicate.

But what was Jack Kaines motivation in the museum project that he had worked with such great enthusi- asm?

Several times, Jack had remarked to me “I am the last of the Proctors”. These comments long remembered, are, I believe the ley to Jack Kaines actions.

14

Who were the Proctors. In 1893, Harold V Tuson was sent from England to Australia to establish the Australian branch f the Dun- lop Pneumatic Tyre Company, so as to cash in on the bicycle boom beginning in this country.

He obtained an office and old warehouse in Melbourne.

Soon, he had hired as assistant Jack Proctor, and Jack’s brother Charles Proctor came in to the company as Jack’s assistant. Tin 1896, the Melbourne branch of the company was well established ad thriving. Tuson returned t England, his assignment completed, leaving Jack Proctor in charge.

To promote the sale of Dunlop tyres, Proctor maintained close liaison with leading racing cyclists of the time – Howard Lewis (the last Australian high wheel cycling champion), George Broadbent the road map man (Victoria’s first user of motorcycles0, Charlie Kellow, Syd Day, James Coleman of Carbine Cycle Co and world champion Harry James, soon Dunlop’s advertising manager.

With sales well established, manufacturing facilities were established near South Melbourne at Montague. Before the turn of the century, a motor quadcycle was imported for the se of Proctor and James. At the beginning of the century, a pair of motor pacers for cycling racing, and a de Dion Bouton car were imported. Thr de Dion became Jack Proctor’s means of transport wherever practicable. Then in 1901, Harry James on a de Don motor tricycle managed to average 20mph over 165 miles of rough roads from Warranbool to Melbourne.

In 1902, Harry James set a world records by covering 460 miles on the road on a motorcycle in 24 hours, and in 1903 with H Stevens, another world record with 777 miles in 24 hours on the road in a Darracque car.

This same year saw the founding of the Automobil Club of Victoria by Harry James, Syd Day and James Coleman. There was an ambitious pioneer motorcycle race between Warrambool and Melbourne twice set to go, and twice cancelled due to rain making the highway impassable to the discuss of the 45 competitors. During 1905 were the Dunlop Sydney – Melbourne, and Melbourne – Sydney motor trials.

Next year was the Dunlop 1000 miles Victorian trial.

In 1908, Harry James and Charlie Kellow with the Talbot car, broke the Melbourne – Sydney speed record. In 1909, Dunlop promoted a bicycle Military Despatch Relay Ride between Adelaide and Sydney via Mel- bourne. Tis event was repeated in 1912 with cycles, motorcycles and motor cas all taking part. The cars av- eraged 24.7mph, the motorcycles 22.2mph and cyclists 11.5mph.

By this time, motor vehicles were coming into general use, and Jack Proctor decided that publicity promo- tions were no longer needed to further the use of his employer’s products.

Large scale Dunlop sponsored events ended.

After Jack Kaines had returned to Aust5ralia, he took a position teaching at Scotch College in Melbourne, living in Hawthorn not far from Jack Proctor’s house in Kew. Possibly, he hoped to obtain preferment for working in the motor car trade. If so, this did not come to pass.

Jack Kaines returned to Adelaide, married Nell, and there they raised their family of Helen, Peter and Ian. By the 1930’s, Jack had tried of teaching, and was working for the motor vehicles registration authority. When in the early 1930’s, the Motorcycle Club of South Australia began the organisations of Old Crocks

Races (now known as the more dignified name of Veteran Vehicles rallies).

Jack was given the task of making regulations for the use of old vehicles on the road. These were very fair and easy, as compared with like regulations in other states.

Having made the regulations, Jack participated in the early events.

Came the 1939-1945 war. Jack saw active service in the R.A.A.F.

In 1956, Harold Rosenhain and Tony Lower both of Glen Osmond set about forming the Veteran and Vintage motorcycle club of South Australia. Their friend Jack Kaines was the natural choice to lead the club, and so became President.

Eventually, Jack retired from his motor registration work, and began to look about for some worthwhile activity.

Eventually it came into his mind that if he brought the Birdwood flour Mill, his long dormant plan to recreate something of the life and times of Jack

Proctor and Harry James could be brought to fruition. And so it was.

To the last of the Proctors we owe the Bay to Birdwood run. Warren Hicks.

Richard Geyer story—when I was young. Hi Brian. I'm at that age when we start rummaging through boxes in cupboards and tossing things out, that's how I uncovered the pictures I sent to Lew Hylton (COMCC).

I joined the V&V when I was 18, and from memory most of the members were much older than I was. I recall some very talented and helpful fellows like Wally Woollatt, Warren Hicks, Chris Harley, Harold Rosen- heim, Ralph Datlen, Murray Mitchell, Jim Coogan and many others - their names escape me.

I remind you this was over 60 years ago and not of digital cameras, I think I had a 'box camera' with 12 chances to get a good picture, take the roll to the chemist and wait a week or so to see the re- sults. The pictures I sent to Lew Hylton were taken by my late brother, I can't recall taking any pictures on the runs.

The 1960 Victor Harbor rally started in Sir Lewis Cohen Avenue (South Park lands), we were farewelled by Kevin Crease (Channel 9), and featured on TV news that evening (Channels 9 and the ABC).

The newspaper cutting of the Clarendon rally spelt my name incorrectly 'R Dyer' instead of R Geyer, I did win the 'Run and Reverse', however; I've no idea what I had to do to win it.

And the 10th February 1962 rally showed my Levis was now numbered 'C26) - can't recall the reason for the change.

I do have a copy of 'Slipping belts and oily chains' (the first 25 years of the V&VMCC of SA) published in November 1980, so I guess you have a copy.

Sorry I don't have any other pictures and I hope the documents are of interest. I've scanned in groups of rallies and will send as attachments using separate emails (limitations of my mail system). If anything else turns up I'll let you know,

Kind regards and all the best for a great Christmas and hopefully a much better new year, Richard Geyer

The Running of the Bullocks

To all members and friends, you are welcome at the Run- ning of the Bullocks, held at Victoria Park Racecourse every 3rd Saturday of the month at 9am . This is an informal gathering where vintage bicycle enthusiasts get together for a chat, a coffee, and usually ends in a slow self-guided lap ( at your own risk) around the racecourse. We have a particular interest in South Australian made bi- cycles manufactured prior to 1980, including the Bullock, Lewis, Elliott Payneham, Empire and others. As some of you would know, these South Australian bicycle manufac- turers also made motorcycles hence our connection, and invitation to all VVMCCSA members. The only criteria is that if you do bring along a bicycle, it should be made prior to 1980. Dimitri Economos

Gawler to Barossa Veteran and Vintage Run Sunday 11th April 2021. I rode my 1914 Douglas motorbike in the pre 1930 Gawler Veteran Vintage Club run to Seppeltsfield today. Photos from the morning tea stop at Lyndoch. There were about 6 other riders from the Veteran and Vintage Motorbike Club as well as about 70 cars from various other Clubs. A good day topped off with the Douglas getting the motorbike trophy. Ian Hese.

Annual Log Book Day

If you ride a motorcycle that is registered under the Conditional (Historic) Registration Scheme there will be two methods of Log Book renewal for everyone.

Members may still attend an annual log book signing day at the regular venue with attention to Social

Distancing and hygiene.

Members may submit their log books via mail to the Secretary for signing by an Approved Person and

then return.

There is one major proviso to both renewal methods.

YOU MUST BE A CURRENT MEMBER TO SUBMIT YOUR LOG BOOKS – THIS MEANS RENEWING YOUR MEMBERSHIP BY DIRECT DEPOSIT AS DESCRIBED IN THE CLUB MAGAZINE “SMOKE

SIGNAL”.

In an effort to protect the health of all members we prefer you to have renewed your membership PRIOR to attending the Log Book day.

Early electronic renewal is recommended.

We will allow a limited number of members into the venues at a time to complete the log book procedure and would encourage everyone else to “Socially distance” themselves whilst waiting and chatting.

On entry, the Treasurer will issue your new membership card (previously paid for) and the Approved

Persons will complete the rest of the business.

EFFECT OF MAILING LOG BOOKS. If you intend to mail your log books you must include a self-addressed and stamped envelope for return of your log book(s). Please be aware that there may be a delay of a few weeks before return of your books and if you need to ride your bike early in the financial year – POST EARLY. Alternatively if you own a num- ber of bikes you may consider retaining one or two log books to continue riding until your first batch of books have been returned.

LOG BOOK DAY.

Sunday 27 June 2021. 1000 – 1200 pm. RSL Payneham, Payneham Rd, Payneham

Sunday 27 June 2021. 12.00 – 4.00 pm, Clarke residence, Blewitt Springs Rd, Blewitt Springs.

CAPTAINS CHATTER.

For those that braved the rain in the suburbs on an April Sunday morning they were rewarded with dry roads once they topped over the hills face. Considering the bleak outlook there was a good turn up for Dan Moriarty’s Hills ride from Balhannah. Dan once again put on an interesting selection of roads and scenery, which was enjoyed by all. Would like to sincerely thank Dan for putting his hand up to organise the ride for us.

It is good when other people organise rides as it adds a different “flavour” to the ride. If you have an idea for a ride please contact me and we will work together to make it happen, even if you have no experience in organising.

After the Riders briefing on a ride, the Ride Leader will head out with the Corner Marshals to place them.

The slower, lower powered and the Veteran bikes will leave only a few minutes later. The main group of riders should wait a good 5 minutes or so after them, before leaving. This is to give the Leader time to position the Corner marshals. Also please use this system after a regroup or a refreshment stop on the ride. Do not overly delay leaving as this will affect the running time of the event and it means also that the corner marshals are unfairly on their corners for too long. Be aware at any stops for the announce- ments for the ride start and keep an eye out for the Leader leaving with the Marshals.

When he leaves get your gear on and get ready to head out. Thanks.

The Festival Of Motorcycling (FOM) is to be held in October this year, COVID willing. This Event is organ- ised by a Committee of members from several motorbike Clubs, to promote motorcycling and our individual Clubs. Our Club is organising the Swap Meet at Balhannah and also the 65th Anniversary Rally at

Mannum. More details will follow over the next few months.

Through the FOM Committee we have arranged in July for SAPOL to conduct a Corner Marshals course. It will be explained the duties of a corner Marshall as well as the legal and safety aspects. You will then be qualified to do these duties as well as road closures for other events (Tour Down Under, major car trials, community events etc). This will only take about an hour, there is no charge and no test at the end and once completed your Certificate will be forwarded to you. I strongly urge anyone who goes on our Club rides to do this course and gain your certificate.

We are heading into that time of the year when it can be cold and wet. Let’s hope that the weather is kind rd to us and keeps the 3 Sunday a nice day for riding. Keep it safe. Ian HESE. CLUB CAPTAIN

TH .INAUGURAL VETERAN MID WEEK RIDE—MAY 20 2021.

At a recent General Meeting it was suggested and approved that we have a mid-week ride for the Veteran bikes.

The first of these will be held on Thursday May 20th starting at 10.00am. The meeting place will be Federation Park, the Park opposite the Hotel in the main street of Gumeracha. There is plenty of room for trailer parking at the rear of the Park.

It will be a relaxed ride, with the riders deciding on the day as to where we will go. The ride is intended for mainly Veteran bikes, though any lower powered bike, moped or scooter will be welcome. The intention is that we can ride our older bikes without having to unduly worry about more modern bikes upsetting our flow.

Of course, if the forecast is for over 35c the ride will be cancelled. I’m sure people won’t come if it’s raining either.

Hope to see you there.

Ian HESE. CLUB CAPTAIN.

Southern Rally—16th May 2021, 10.30a.m.

The Southern Rally on the 16th May 2021 covers some routes we haven't taken for a few years - starting in

McLaren Vale, riding along the coast, lunching at Meadows and returning to McLaren Vale in the afternoon.

The rally begins at Oxenberry Winery on Kangarilla Road, McLaren Vale. Oxenberry is a popular tourist destination so members should leave cars and trailers on the west side of the carpark.

We depart Oxenberry and head to Willunga where we take Aldinga Road to the esplanade at Aldinga Beach. We follow the Esplanade to the Aldinga Beach carpark where we have our first regroup. We then continue on the lower esplanade until we reach the end and eventually join the Main South Road for our ride around the hills face. Look out for the giant Buddha statue and the stunning view of the coastline.

Before entering Myponga we turn right onto Reservoir Road and make our way over the dam wall at the Myponga Reservoir and thence to Carrickalinga Beach and Normanville. At Normanville Beach we stop in the carpark for our second regroup. We continue on from Normanville climbing back into the hills at Yankalilla and make our way to Myponga for morning coffee. Myponga has a range of shops and conveniences and we plan to spend about 30 minutes there.

Leaving Myponga we take Pages Flat Road (yes, a little bumpy for the rigids) for its full length when we join Victor Harbor Road for about 1km after which we join Brookman Road for a ride through the forest to Meadows. We will stop at Meadows for about one hour for lunch. There is a bakery and an excellent pie shop in the main street.

Departing Meadows we head to Kangarilla and back to McLaren Vale via McLaren Flat.

Total rally distance is 133km.

Veteran & Vintage Section—Please note veterans should consider if the route is suitable as it includes highway sections, steep gradients and a couple of equally steep descents. An alternative route for veterans and small capacity machines is to ride direct to Meadows and meet us for lunch between 12.30 and 1.00pm.

As always I will be looking for marshals and a volunteer for trailer duties. Please speak to Ian Hese or contact me on 0411 888 313.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday 16th May.

Tony Morisset
