It will be important in determining how Wembley develops over the next 15 years or so. Building on the council’s vision to develop Wembley as a destination which will drive the economic regeneration of Brent, the plan includes key planning objectives and policies and provides guidance for the development of over 30 sites in the Wembley area. Our aim, reflected in the Plan, is to provide new homes, jobs and shopping and leisure facilities, whilst ensuring that important infrastructure and services, such as transport improvements and new schools, are delivered to meet the needs of local people. At Brent we are committed to full community involvement in the important decisions that are (Cllr) George Crane made and particularly in bringing forward plans that are likely to affect the local community. Lead Member for Regeneration and Major Projects Two stages of consultation have been undertaken on the Area Action Plan to date. A final stage of consultation is to be undertaken before the plan is submitted to the Secretary of State for Examination.I hope you will take this opportunity to participate in the process of drawing up the new plan. To accomplish this goal a comprehensive system was created that measures and monitors different data points. With the collection of this data a weighted index was created to produce a final regeneration value. This final value is used as a guide to show Brent Council their status in fulfilling sustainable regeneration.     WEMBLEY – From Vision To Reality Introduction by Councillor Paul Lorber, Leader of Brent Council Wembley is one of London’s most ambitious regeneration projects. The scale and pace of change over the last few years, since the decision was made to site the new National Stadium here, has been breathtaking. The stadium itself is now nearing completion. Wembley Arena has had a £35 million transformation, sensitively returning the building to its former glory on the outside, whilst providing the comforts expected from London’s premier music venue on the inside. In between these two landmarks is a splendid new public space – Arena Square - with fountains, music and lightshows. Planning permission has now been granted for over 4,000 new homes, new hotels, new shops and restaurants, new leisure facilities and new offices. Building work has already started on site at the land surrounding the Stadium and at Central Square on Wembley High Road. The public sector has played a crucial part. £80 million has been invested to upgrade and improve transport infrastructure. Wembley Park station has been expanded with a new ticket hall, new feature steps and new lifts. Work is underway on a new bus and taxi interchange, and a new façade for the commuter entrance. Wembley Stadium station is now configured around the stunning new White Horse Bridge. And Wembley Central station has a new bridge and platform improvements. All three stations have increased capacity and can now carry 50,000 passengers an hour on event days. The time has come to review and renew the Council’s vision for Wembley; to take stock of the Wembley journey, to celebrate the progress to date, to reflect on the relevance of the existing priorities, and to refine the Wembley vision accordingly.

    The Wembley Park Story – Part 6 Welcome back to this final part of Wembley Park’s story. In Part 5 (“click” if you missed it) we reached the point where Wembley had won the bid to be the home of England’s new football stadium. In 1999, the Football Association bought the old stadium for £103million, through a new company, Wembley National Stadium Ltd. Even though the plans for the new stadium were still vague, an Australian company, Multiplex, agreed to build it for £326.5m, just before the old stadium’s final match (an England v. Germany international) in October 2000. Many people had thought that Wembley’s iconic “twin towers”, which were Grade II listed buildings, would be retained. However, Brent Council agreed to the whole stadium being demolished, although work did not begin on that until 2002. 1. Wembley's "twin towers", about to be demolished in January 2003. (Photograph by Pete Tomsett) Although the old Wembley Stadium estate included over 100 acres of land and buildings, the F.A. had decided that they were ‘not in the business of regeneration’. By 2002, around 85 acres, including Wembley Arena (in 1978, the former Empire Pool was officially renamed), had been sold to the developers, Quintain Estates. They began drawing up a masterplan for the regeneration of Wembley Park, in consultation with Brent Council. Early in 2003, the world watched as the towers of the old stadium were demolished. Rubble from them was used for part of the foundations of the new Wembley. What I didn’t know, until a few years ago, was that a concrete flagpole base, from the top of one of the “twin towers”, was saved as a memory of the old Wembley.

    RICH WHITE - Wembley Vision Report 07812444612 [email protected] www.counterwork.co.uk Introduction My initial intention was to discover resident’s opinions and thoughts about Wembley, and also what they would change about it. The purpose of this was to generate visual and written material from which I will then develop an artwork. Processes I spent four days (from the 3rd to the 6th December) based at The Coming Soon Club in Cottrell House. I had prepared a questionnaire for visitors to fill in, and also provided paper, pens and pencils for people to leave their drawings and thoughts. In addition to this I also created a slideshow which was continually updated with new texts and images as they occurred. The initial texts and images were created by myself in order to provide visitors with more information and stimulus. The text posed questions and suggestions such as ‘What would you like to Workshop tables at Cottrell House see happen in Wembley?’ and ‘Draw a picture of Wembley in the future’. As the project progressed I added quotes from the questionnaires and from conversations that occurred. The images were photographs I had taken on my mobile phone whilst out and about in Wembley. I would try to take unusual, but still beautiful, images as a way showing residents a side of Wembley they might normally miss due to familiarity. The images were also posted to twitter with the tag #wembleyvision. Images and drawings from attendees were added as the project progressed. As well as being at Cottrell House I also spent time walking around various parts of Wembley observing how people used the different spaces along the ‘Fringe’ area and around the stadium.
