This positive effect of the self on subsequent memory performance is called as Self-Reference Effect (SRE). The neural basis of SRE is still poorly understood. The main goal of the present work was thus to highlight brain changes associated with SRE in terms of activity and functional coupling and during both encoding and retrieval so as to assess the relative contribution of both processes to SRE. For this purpose, we used an fMRI event-related self-referential paradigm in 30 healthy young subjects and measured brain activity during both encoding and retrieval of self-relevant information compared to a semantic control condition. We found that SRE was associated with brain changes during the encoding phase only, including both greater activity in the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, and greater functional coupling between these brain regions and the posterior cingulate cortex. These findings highlight the contribution of brain regions involved in both SRP and episodic memory and the relevance of the communication between these regions during the encoding process as the neural substrates of SRE. This is consistent with the idea that SRE reflects a positive effect of the reactivation of self-related memories on the encoding of new information in episodic memory. Lieberman Department of Psychology, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA 90095, USA Introduction Self control can be defined as “the overriding or inhibiting of automatic, habitual, or innate behaviors, urges, emotions, or desires that would otherwise interfere with goal directed behavior” (Muraven et al., 2006). Without self-control, capricious and enjoyable decisions would be made, statements uttered, and actions taken. For example, if one has a deadline at work for an unpleasant project, he or she may have the inclination to leave work and do something fun instead of taking the responsible, yet dull, path of meeting the deadline. Or, if one has a strong urge to disclose to one’s boss his or her opinion of that horrendous project, the person may instead remain silent and sensibly agree to work late in order to competently finish the task at hand. While it is sometimes more desirable to follow one’s own whims, those actions could occur at the expense of practical and boring yet sensible decisions. Clearly it is important that some sort of internal control system be implemented in order to inhibit such impulses so that more appropriate decisions can be made and actions taken. When that control system is impaired problems occur, such as impulsive behavior in ADHD, gambling, poor financial decisions, substance abuse, etc. The negative behavioral and clinical manifestations of a lack of self-control underscore the importance of thoroughly understanding the basis of an intact control mechanism at many different levels of analysis, including cognitive, clinical, social, and neural.

ABSTRACT A series of neuroimaging experiments were conducted using adult participants to explore the neurocognitive bases of reasoning and control processes in Theory of Mind (ToM). Through careful manipulation of psychologically relevant parameters, these were designed to modulate neural regions considered important for ToM, the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), alongside regions more typically associated with executive function, the ventrolateral and dorsomedial prefrontal cortices (vlPFC / dmPFC respectively). This enabled close inspection of the functional profile of these regions, in the context of mentalizing. The core findings were: 1) TPJ was modulated by the valence of mental states. Thus, TPJ does not simply respond to mental representation; the content of the representation is important. 2) The presence of activation in rostral mPFC was manipulated by varying the mode of reasoning.
