KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY IN TIROL. REBECCA SAUNDERS COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE. 15TH EDITION 29.08. – 09.09.2018 KLANGSPUREN INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY 2018 KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018. The annual Tyrolean festival of contemporary music provides a stage for performances, encounters, and for the exploration and exchange of new musical ideas. With a different thematic focus each year, KLANGSPUREN aims to present a survey of the fascinating, diverse panorama that the music of our time boasts. KLANGSPUREN values open discourse, participation, and partnership and actively seeks encounters with locals as well as visitors from abroad. The entire beautiful region of Tyrol unfolds as the festival’s playground, where the most cutting-edge and modern forms of music as well as many young composers and musicians are presented. On the occasion of its own milestone anniversary – among other anniversaries that KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ 2018 will be celebrating this year – the 25th edition of the festival has chosen the motto „Festivities. Places.“ (in German: „Feste. Orte.“). The program emphasizes projects and works that focus on aspects of celebrations, festivities, rituals, and events and have a specific reference to place and situation. KLANGSPUREN INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLE MODERN ACADEMY is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The Academy is an offshoot of the renowned International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) in Frankfurt and was founded in the same year as IEMA, in 2003. The Academy is central to KLANGSPUREN and has developed into one of the most successful projects of the Tyrolean festival for new music. The high standards of the Academy are vouched for by prominent figures who have acted as Composers in Residence: György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Steve Reich, Benedict Mason, Michael Gielen, Wolfgang Rihm, Martin Matalon, Johannes Maria Staud, Heinz Holliger, George Benjamin, Unsuk Chin, Hans Zender, Hans Abrahamsen, Wolfgang Mitterer, Beat Furrer, Enno Poppe, and most recently in 2017, Sofia Gubaidulina. -

Performances As Analyses of Cyclic Macroform in Arnold Schoenberg's
Shaping Form: Performances as Analyses of Cyclic Macroform in Arnold Schoenberg’s Sechs kleine Klavierstücke, op. 19 (1911), in the Recordings of Eduard Steuermann and Other Pianists * Christian U and Thomas Glaser NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: hps://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.20.26.4/mto.20.26.4.u.php KEYWORDS: analysis and performance, Arnold Schoenberg, corpus study of musical recordings, Eduard Steuermann, history of musical performance, Sechs kleine Klavierstücke, Six Lile Piano Pieces, op. 19 ABSTRACT: Arnold Schoenberg’s Sechs kleine Klavierstücke (Six Lile Piano Pieces), op. 19 (1911), offer a fruitful case study to examine and categorize performers’ strategies in regard to their form- shaping characteristics. A thorough quantitative and qualitative analysis of 46 recordings from 41 pianists (recorded between 1925 to 2018), including six recordings from Eduard Steuermann, the leading pianist of the Second Viennese School, scrutinizes the interdependency between macro- and microformal pianistic approaches to this cycle. In thus tracing varying conceptions of a performance-shaped cyclic form and their historical contexts, the continuous unfurling of the potential of Schoenberg’s musical ideas in both “structuralist” and “rhetorical” performance styles is systematically explored, offering a fresh approach to the controversial discussion on how analysis and performance might relate to one another. -
Milko Kelemen: Life and Selected Works for Violoncello
MILKO KELEMEN: LIFE AND SELECTED WORKS FOR VIOLONCELLO by JOSIP PETRAČ (Under the Direction of David Starkweather) ABSTRACT Milko Kelemen (b. 1924) is one of the most extraordinary Croatian composers of the post-World War II era. He has received numerous prestigious awards for his work, while his compositions are published by major companies, including Schott, Universal, Peters, and Hans Sikorski editions. His music is little studied or known internationally. This paper examines this innovative, avant-garde musician and sheds light both on Kelemen’s life and his compositional technique. The latter is examined in four compositions featuring cello as the main subject: Changeant (1968), Drammatico (1983), Requiem for Sarajevo (1994), and Musica Amorosa (2004). The examination of these compositions is placed in a biographical context which reveals how Kelemen’s keen political and cultural interests influenced his development as a composer. In particular, this document looks at Kelemen’s role as one of the founders, and the first president, of the Zagreb Music Biennale Festival, an event known for its ground-breaking work in bringing together artists and composers from the eastern and western blocs during the Cold War, as well as revitalising Croatia’s old-fashioned and provincial cultural scene. This festival of avant-garde music has been running since 1961. Diana Soh Composer
Diana Soh Composer Described as “a composer to follow” (France Musique), Diana Soh is one of today’s most exciting young artists. A multi- disciplinary Singaporean composer based in Paris, she has written for a wide range of instrumentation from chamber music, to orchestra, dance, film, choral and vocal music, and multi-media site-specific works. Diana’s musical interest is directed at exploring performance interactivity as well as obtaining specific sound colours from the intimate collaboration with performers. Known for integrating the use of technology and interested in theatre, she often surprises her audiences and finds ways to address social issues of our times in her work and “composes the impossible” (Concert Classic). Notable highlights include A is for Aiyah with soprano Elise Chauvin as the soloist, which was premiered in Singapore by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (2018) as well as her string quartet sssh by the Mettis Quartet at the Aix en Provence Festival (2018). Her upcoming seasons see her venturing into the music theatre world with 2 operas: Façon Tragique de Tuer une Femme which will be premiered in 2023, and The Carmen Case the season after. Her adventure in vocal writing continues with a mono-drama for Opera de Lyon and a commission from the Maîtrise de Radio France, Parisce and a solo voice piece titled La Ville-Zizi. In addition, of smaller things will be presented in Austria by Schallfeld Ensemble in 2021 and Of the spaces between by Ensemble Æquilibrium in Singapore in 2022. Since establishing herself in Paris, Diana was Composer-in-Residence for 2 years (2012 / 2013) at the National Centre for Creation - La Muse en Circuit, concluded with a one-hour monographic concert of her works during the 2013 Festival Extension. -
The Physicality of Sound Production on Acoustic Instruments
THE PHYSICALITY OF SOUND PRODUCTION ON ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Tristan Rhys Williams School of Arts Brunel University September 2010 (funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council) Abstract This thesis presents practical research into sound production on instruments, working collaboratively with players, in order to build an understanding of the sounds available. I have explored the way in which instrumental technique can be extended in such a way as to function as the basis for musical material. The function of ‘figuration’ has also be brought into question, by employing seemingly primitive, residual material pushed to such a degree that it is possible to hear what happens underneath a gesture. Research in this area has been conducted by, among others, Helmut Lachenmann and Rebecca Saunders; I am drawn to the way their work highlights the tangible quality of sound. The exploration of the physicality of sound production inevitably encounters the problem that the finished work becomes a catalogue of extended techniques. My research has drawn on the work of these composers and has attempted to resolve this problem by exploring the way in which texture can suggest ‘line’ and the structural implications of sculpting self-referential material through angular and polarized divisions. This facilitates a Braille-like reading of a sound’s progress by foregrounding a non-thematic sound-surface of resonance and decay. This takes a positive and active approach to the problems of musical language, by questioning the functions and expectations put upon music. The possible solutions have been worked through in a series of works for mixed chamber ensembles, in order to investigate the palette possibilities of fusing instruments in intimate settings. -
ORPHEUS INSTITUUT GENT. Vom Hören
ORPHEUS INSTITUUT GENT. The Musician as Listener. -
