Finally, a special thanks to Ermanno for being an unfailing source of encouragement, and to all my family and friends in Ireland, to my parents Ann and Eugene, who helped and supported me right to the end. 2 The period stretching from around 1880 to 1914 was one of great creative effervescence in France, marked by new trends in art and literature and the opening up of new fields of knowledge. A time of increasing political polarisation, it was also in this epoch that scholars, writers and artists began to get involved in the political life of the nation on an unprecedented scale and when the term ‘intellectual’ first came into common usage. Remembered today as the founder of the French school of sociology it is from this period that Émile Durkheim’s scientific breakthrough dates. Drawing on a set of conceptual tools elaborated by Pierre Bourdieu, this project delves into the early period of French sociology and seeks to explain how Durkheim managed to distinguish himself among his contemporaries as the legitimate representative of the new discipline in France. Through looking at his ties to the major institutions of the French intellectual field it traces Durkheim’s progress from a situation of relative marginality in the 1880s to a dominant intellectual position by the eve of the First World War. The suggestion is that through enquiring into the sources of Durkheim’s legitimacy we can also gain an original perspective on the debated topic of his politics and conception of his own role as a public intellectual during the French Third Republic. 3 Introduction...............................................................................p. 10 1.Context............................................................................................................p. 15 2. Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, a textbook written in 1877 by Augustine Fouillée, is our entry point to illustrate the strategies used in manufacturing French identity. We also analyze other texts: political speeches from the revolutionary era and from the Third Republic, as well as testimonies from both students and teachers written during the twentieth century. Bringing together close readings and research from various fields – history, linguistics, sociology, and philosophy – we use an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on language and national identity formation. Our findings underscore the connections between French primary education and national identity. Our analysis also contends that national identity in France during the Third Republic was an artificial construction and demonstrates how otherness was put in the service of populism.

    Biliana Kassabova History of Political Thought Workshop December 4, 2017 Blanqui’s note Nov. 23, 1848 Blanqui between Myth and Archives: Revolution, Dictatorship, and Education This piece, very much a work in progress, aims to make sense of the revolutionary ideas and actions of Louis-Auguste Blanqui. It complicates our ideas of political thought regarding revolution in the nineteenth century, by arguing that the binary of centralized versus popular revolution needs to be revised. It is part of a larger project on concepts of revolutionary leadership in France from the French Revolution of 1789 until the Paris Commune of 1871. Within this historical trajectory, Blanqui is an interpreter of 18th century ideas into 19th century contexts, a political thinker and actor who plays a key role in the various reformulations of the revolutionary tradition. 1848 does not enjoy a stellar reputation among historians of France. The revolution of February that year saw the overthrow of the last king of France, followed by the establishment of a new French republic. This republic, however, lasted for only three years, brought little and short-lived social change, remained rather conservative, though was also laden with bitter parliamentary strife, and ended through a coup d’état that inaugurated a new authoritarian régime, a Second Empire with Napoleon III at its head. To add insult to injury, even the attempts at establishing a viable parliamentary republican system were famously seen by political observers and participants from 2 almost all parts of the political spectrum as derivative, incompetent, and worse yet – laughable. “There have been more mischievous revolutionaries than those of 1848, but I doubt if there have been any stupider,”1 quipped Alexis de Tocqueville in his posthumously published Recollections.

    Sociology in Continental Europe after WWII1 Matthias Duller & Christian Fleck Continental particularities Sociology was invented in Europe. For several reasons, however, it did not bloom there for the first one-and-a-half centuries. The inventor of sociology, Auguste Comte, was an independent scholar with no affiliation to any institution. Likewise, other European founding fathers, such as Alexis Tocqueville, Herbert Spencer, Karl Marx, and Friedrich Engels, were not professors, nor were they paid for their scholarly service by the state. Looking at the history of sociology in continental Europe, we do not come upon a striking role model of a “professional sociologist.” What is normally called the classical period ranges from pre-Comtean authors down to the generation after Comte (born 1798): Among the most prominent figures, from Ludwig Gumplowicz (1838), Vilfredo Pareto (1848), Tomáš Masaryk (1850), Maksim Kovalevsky (1851), Ferdinand Tönnies (1855), Georg Simmel (1858), Émile Durkheim (1858), Max Weber (1864), Marcel Mauss (1872), Roberto Michels (1876), Maurice Halbwachs (1977) to Florian Znaniecki (1882), only the Frenchmen and the exiled Pole occupied positions whose descriptions covered sociology and nothing other than sociology. All the others earned their living by practicing different professions or teaching other disciplines. For a very long time sociology failed to appear as a distinct entity in Continental Europe’s academic world. Between these two extremes there is considerable space for us to consider conflict as a relationship; this is what differentiates it from modes of behaviour involving war and rupture. Sociology suggests different ways of differentiating various modes of social conflict. The question is not only theoretical. Ashley said that in the city they had been accustomed to getting looks and hearing comments when she and her partner walked hand in hand. Otherwise, she felt that they were at least being tolerated. There had been little to no outright discrimination. Things changed when they moved to the small town for her partner’s job. For the first time, Ashley found herself experiencing direct discrimination because of her sexual orientation. Some of it was particularly hurtful. Landlords would not rent to them.

    Archives départementales des Vosges 40 J Archives de la famille Ferry (1813-1981) Répertoire numérique détaillé établi par Mélanie GLESS stagiaire, licence Gestion de l’information et du Document pour les Organisations à Mulhouse avec la collaboration de Benoît MARTIN attaché de conservation sous la direction d’Isabelle CHAVE , conservatrice du patrimoine, directrice des Archives départementales des Vosges Épinal, 2005/2006 INTRODUCTION ________________________________________________________________________________ Historique du fonds Les archives de la famille Ferry sont entrées aux Archives départementales des Vosges en 1985 par voie extraordinaire. Elles ont été rassemblées par Hélène Ferry, épouse d’Abel, - lui-même neveu de Jules Ferry -, qui en a fait don pour une grande partie à sa fille Fresnette Pisani-Ferry. Cette dernière, dans son testament olographe du 8 février 1978, légua au musée des Ferry à Saint-Dié-des- Vosges « toutes les archives classées par sa mère ». Cependant, deux codicilles vinrent bouleverser leurs destinées en 1981 et 1982. En 1981, elle annula les précédentes dispositions au bénéfice de la bibliothèque municipale de Saint-Dié et fixa des conditions de conservation, de classement et d'accessibilité du fonds, dont le contrôle fut délégué au directeur du Centre national de la recherche scientifique. Le non respect de ces conditions avéré, elles furent léguées aux Archives de France en 1982, qui confirma, en 1985, la conservation physique du fonds aux Archives départementales des Vosges. Initialement conservé au chalet des Ferry à Saint-Dié, le fonds a donc été successivement conservé à la bibliothèque municipale de Saint-Dié, puis aux Archives départementales des Vosges, à Épinal. La correspondance de Jean Pisani-Ferry, exécuteur testamentaire de sa mère, Fresnette, et d’Odile Jurbert, directrice des Archives départementales des Vosges, en 1985, laisse à penser qu’une partie du fonds était toujours conservée dans une propriété de la famille Ferry à cette date.
