PratimaMathad and *Rajasamarsen K Modi Department of Post Graduate Studies & Research in Botany, Gulbarga University, Gulbarga, Karnataka - India. *Corresponding Author: Rajasamarsen K Modi Abstract Sacred groves are one of the finest examples of traditional in situ conservation practices, which dates much prior to the modern concept of wildlife reserves. The forests are the property of the gods of the villages in which they are situated. The present status of sacred groves is a matter of deep concern as they are on a path of gradual decline and disappearance. It is surprising that the phenomena of sacred groves have not been documented from Yadgir district of Hyderabad Karnataka Region. The present study deals with floristic composition of angiosperms grown and nurtured in the sacred grove located in Chintanapalli of Yadgir district. Study revealed 209 species spreads under 169 genera belonging to 57 families among those 54 species are investigated medicinally important and 14 are Red listed one. Among the species studied 60 are trees, 34 shrubs, 89 herbs, 21 twiner/climbers 03 aquatic, 03 are parasitic in nature and 01 is liana. The interesting result is Terminalia arjuna enriched sacred grove. Key Words: Sacred grove, Gavisiddalingeshwara, Phytodiversity, Red List plants Introduction Sacred groves are traditionally managed forest patches that functionally link, social life and forest management system of the region.

(Vahl) (Verbenaceae) Udodeme H O*, Odoh U E, Ugwu P N, Diovu E O, Okonta E O, Onyekere P F, Ezugwu C O Department of Pharmacognosy and Environmental Medicines, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Available Online: 10th September, 2016 ABSTRACT The pharmacognostic standards of fresh, powdered and transverse sections of Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (SJ) leaf was carried out to determine its macroscopical, microscopical (both qualitative and quantitative), analytical standards and phytochemical profile. The macroscopy revealed a simple, glabrous, relatively thick and slightly fleshy leaf that is obovate with symmetrical base, bluntly acute apex, with a serrate-dentate margin. The qualitative microscopy of the powdered leaf shows xylem vessels with phloem parenchyma cells, epidermal cells with diacytic type of stomata, epidermal cells with anticlinal sinuous wall, palisade cells attached to epidermal cells, multicellular uniseirate trichomes, irregular shaped prism calcium oxalate, and small bundle of fibre. The quantitative microscopy of the leaf of SJ showed the values of palisade ratio, stomatal number (upper and lower epidermis), stomatal index (upper and lower surface), vein-islet number and vein termination number to be 4.42 ± 2.53, (105.67 ± 2.73, 277 ± 17.08), (28.00 ± 2.31, 21.00 ± 2.51), 15.67 ± 0.66 and 3.50 ± 0.00 respectively. For the analytical standards; 11.85 ±0.06, 2.17 ± 0.00, 8.80 ± 0.14, 2.04 ± 0.02, 2.51 ± 0.15, 4.85 ±0.22 and 4.30 ± 0.02 were obtained for total ash, water soluble ash, sulphated ash, acid insoluble ash, alcohol soluble extractive value, water soluble extractive value and moisture content respectively.

  • Stachytarpheta Jamaicensis Blue Porterweed
Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) M.H. Vahl Blue Porterweed (Stachytarpheta indica) Other Common Names: Blue Snakeweed, Common Snakeweed, Jamaican Vervain. Family: Verbenaceae. Cold Hardiness: A cold intolerant subtropical / tropical plant, hardy in USDA zones 10 (9) and 11. Foliage: Evergreen; opposite; simple; ovate to oblong-elliptic; 1O to 2O (3O) long by 1O to 1½O (2O) wide; tips acute; pinnately veined; rugose, quilted in appearance from above; veins strongly raised beneath; nearly glabrous; margins dentate-serrate; dark green to blue-green; base cuneate; petiole ½O to ¾O long and winged. Flower: The 12O to 18O inflorescences are spikes of small blue to violet-purple ¼O five-lobed tubular flowers that are perhaps most aptly described as resembling a rat’s tail with flowers; flowering occurs year-round in the tropics; only a few flowers open on each inflorescence at a time, so much of the flower stalk remains without bloom even during the flowering process; flowers open in the morning, but tend to close in the afternoon. Fruit: The fruit are two tiny nutlets enclosed in the dry calyx; not ornamental. Stem / Bark: Stems — medium thickness; light to medium green turning brown and becoming semi- woody; squarish or at least four-sided in cross-section; scattered small stout bristly hairs give the 1 1 stem a scabrous feel; Buds — tiny; /16O to /32O long; light green; foliose; Bark — not often formed in our region. Habit: Blue Porterweed forms an irregular low spreading subshrub 3N to 4N tall with an equal or greater spread; the flowers are held on snake-like sinuous flowering spikes.

Amruthesh Department of studies in Botany, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri, Mysuru-570006 (Karnataka) India. Abstract Kukkarahalli lake is situated in the campus of the University of Mysore, Mysuru. It is one of the richest sites of plant diversity in Mysuru. The diversity of angiosperms has been found to be very rich both in population and species richness (290 species) that show seasonal variation. Among angiosperms, dominance shown by the families such as Poaceae, Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Amaranthaceae, Malvaceae. The present study is highly significant since study finds 129 species of angiosperm which were not recorded in the “Flowering Plants of the Mysore University Campus” (1974) which recorded angiosperms. Lake has large number of herbs than other forms of plants that indicates a high rate of anthropogenic disturbances. Presence of large number of invasive species and weeds are leading to the loss of species diversity in the lake area. Key words : Wetlands, Angiosperm diversity, Herbs, Invasive species. Introduction regeneration, and other benefits that are essential to Wetlands are one of the most valuable resources of human kind and indeed are a cornerstone of the global the global ecosystem, which support a high level of ecosystem (Paterson et al., 2004). The millennium biological diversity and also serve as an uncountable ecosystem assessment reported that about 60% of all service to the environment (Roy, 2015).
